GBA Tron Light Cycles

on Sunday, January, 22, 2006 11:35 AM
A while ago there was mention of new light cycle designs in the GBA game. I had asked for pictures and recently a friend emailed me what appears to be screen captures. How one gets sceen captures off a GBA I have no idea and I haven't asked. I'm guessing I'm better off not knowing. Anyways these new pictures really caught my interest and seeing as both my boys have a GBA I'll have to pick this game up next time I see it. Anyways from the screen captures I made these.

Enjoy,
Carl

Now on with the questions....

(1) Anyone remember the tread where this topic was brought up? I can't find it now. I was going to put these pics there but maybe it was a side topic brought up in a thread about something else. If so it propably warrents its own thread anyways.

(2) Looks like the first green button lets you select your bike. The first option is the classic light cycle. The second I believe is the super cycle designed by Syd for Tron 2.0. Do the other two have names? Do we know who designed them? DaveTRON as I recall said it wasn't Syd. And by any chance does anyone have any other images of these 2 new designs? Maybe sketches made by their designers? I really like that last design in particular and would love to know more.

(3) This is more of a comment then a question. Looks like the second green button which looks like a paint roller lets you select the color of your bike. It appears you can pick between blue, red, yellow, and purple.

(4) The last green button lets you pick a jet wall (or trail) style. The first appears to be called the classic trail style but if you ask me the last one looks closer to what I'd call the classic style. Anyways... do these other styles have names? Does the trail style affect game play? If so how?

The 5 little animations I made are my attempt to figure out what is going on in the top left corner of the screen captures. It appears there are 6 options there. I don't have any screen captures that show the second option selected. Anyways from the screen captures I do have it appears that each option has a little video tied to it. I'm sure I'm missing frames from these videos but I tried to recreate them from what I had.

If I had to guess what these options mean I'd say this...

(1) Option 1 appears to be a speed boost. I see the flash of the rear tire and the bike zooms away.

(2) I can't even guess about Option 2 as I don't have a single frame of its video.

(3) Option 3 seems to show a blue bike going through a red jet wall. I guess this means with this option you can go through the jet walls of your opponents.

(4) Option 4 shows a bike making something like a sonic boom behind it. Maybe the shock wave destroys opponents in the area.

(5) Option 5 looks like a bike on one of those revolving things you see at use car lots. What this does for you I have no idea.

(6) Option 6 seems to show a blue bike going through a blue jet wall. I guess this means you can go through your own jet wall with this option.

Can anyone with the game tell me how close I got?

Just curious,

You can use a Game Boy Advance emulator to load up the Tron 2.0 Rom (assuming you own it for real, of course ) and get screen caps that way.

wwwmwww Wroteo the other two have names?

No, they're just called "Alternate Bike Style x", x being the version. There is a "super bike" mod which is a different style and appears to combine alt Bike Styles II and III. Super Bike is basically ALL lightcycle upgrades in one:

EDT: Isn't this one closer to Syd's design than the other three?

Anyways... do these other styles have names?

No... again just "Alternate Trail Style x"

Does the trail style affect game play?

I don't believe so, no.

Correct. "Speed Boost Ability"

"Brakes Ability"

Kinda. "Phase Shift Ability" teleports you past the wall.

(4) Option 4 shows a bike making something like a sonic boom behind it. Maybe the shock wave destroys opponents in the area.

Correct. "Shockwave Ability".

(5) Option 5 looks like a bike on one of those revolving things you see at use car lots. What this does for you I have no idea.

The aforementioned "Super Bike".

This is "T-Bar Defense"... if someone is following closely behind you you can throw out a + shaped trail pretty much derezzing them on the spot.

Hmm, I really should have paid more attention to the GBA version of the game. I knew there were some extra things in it, but I had no idea that the additions were so . . . plentiful.

Maybe it's time to take another look at it.

Ok... so atleast the screen caps are legal then I assume. Assuming one owns a Game Boy game and wants screen caps how does one get the rom out of the little game cartage and into a PC? If the answer is download it off the internet it still sounds legally questionable to me.

I'm no lawyer, but as far as I know if you own the original game in whatever form, (original game board, disc, cart, etc....) then you can possess the ROM image to emulate without fear of prosecution.

This means that Dave, possessing the original Tron image, can MAME emulate Tron no problem. If you have the original Pitifall Atari 2600 cart, you can play it in Stella with no problem.

The problem comes in when you obtain ROM images that are not backup copies of something you already own.

Same goes for music and mp3's.

...wait, I thought they did have other names...*pops in Killer APP*
...well, I found something...
Alternate bike style I = XR style light cycle
Alternate bike style II = M-1 style light cycle (my fav!!!)
Alternate bike style III =Z-99 style light cycle
the "super bike" chip gives you Syd's design...I think.

I hope this is what you were looking for.

When you turn on the game, after pressing start for the first time, select view chips. Simply press select the light cycle chip you want to view and press A. It will show you a full screen shot of the cycle and give you the name at the bottom of the screen.

Ahh.. I didn't try the chips. I was only looking at the "battle mode" information.

Sorry guys, I'm having a hard time keeping up with my own tread. I've had zero free time these last few days so I'll reply when I can. Anyways...

Here is Syd's design...

http://www.tron-sector.com/gallery/default.aspx?do=gallery§ion=2&category=14&group=Vehicle%20Design
Personally I see differences is the 3 designs displayed here and they are also all a little different from the design seen in Tron 2.0.

http://www.tron-sector.com/gallery/show.aspx?ID=916
Are there any better pictures of the Super Cycle as it appeared in Tron 2.0 out there? I think I once saw a very nice high resolution image of this poster

http://www.tron-sector.com/gallery/show.aspx?ID=952
that wasn't a photograph but the actual image the poster was made from. I can't find it now so maybe I was dreaming. Anyways... if its out and someone knows about it please point me to it. I think its a very nice image... I think I'd turn it into some nice desk top wall paper.

If I were to ever try and model a super cycle I'd need nice views of it from the side, top, front, rear, and bottom. I assume both sides are symetrical but if not I'd need to see both sides. I'm not sure such images exist and as free time is hard to fine these days its low on my list of things to try and track down. Personally I like the classic original much better.

Oh and back to the reason I though the second GBA design was the super cycle was mainly because it was the only one I noticed where the front wheel looks disjoint from the rest of the bike.

I always liked this one.....

This is supposedly a screen shot from the X-Box version although I don't remember seeing it.

I agree it should be legal to possess it but HOW does one actually get it in their possession legally? Is there hardware out there for pulling ROMs out of GBA carts for example?

I must admit I'm not familiar with Stella. Is it something similar to MAME?

Boingo_Buzzard Wrote:The problem comes in when you obtain ROM images that are not backup copies of something you already own.

My concern isn't so much about the lagality of possessing the ROM if you own the cart for example, its more about actually HOW one obtains it. I'm guessing one can find this sort of stuff on the internet but it should be illegal to put the ROMs online as how does one assure that only cart owners download the ROM? Maybe there is another way to get these ROMs that I'm just not aware of.

Boingo_Buzzard Wrote:

Well I don't have an MP3 player (well aside from my PC) but atleast there I have the software where I can take one of my purchased CDs and turn it into MP3 files. I know mp3s can also be obtained online but there too I know some of those sites have found themselves in legal problems in the past. Not owning an mp3 player I have to admit I haven't kept up with the details of thoses cases too closely so I'm not sure where all that stand at the moment. But again I do know how to make a backup copy of a music CD without doing anything I'd consider legally questionable. I don't know how to do that with a GBA game.

Full Screen!? Are these pics even larger then the little images above that only partially fill the top right hand corner of the screen? If so I *MUST* get some new screen caps. I'll email my friend to see if he can help again but if anyone else here can get these PLEASE feel free to share.

Thanks,
