I have an 8.5" Tandy Floppy Disk hanging on the bulletin board in my office. Proof positive.

Hey ixx77 Do you remember those older computer using the 8 inch diskettes? I remember some having those. I think I still have one here somewhere with my older 5.25 collection here. Those were the days of floppies.

Yep, people who grew up in the 70's had bigger floppies than people do today. People today are probably jealous, too.

But in seriousness, yeah there were definitely 8" floppies before 5.25". I bet you can even see some 8" drives when you watch Tron. Most likely when Flynn and Lora sneak through the computer lab at Encom.

I still have a 5.25" floppy drive, and I won't part with it because - gasp - I still have some stuff on those disks from years ago. I keep telling myself that eventually I'll get around to putting it on CD or DVD . . . but there's a lot to copy so it's going to be a lot of work.

I'm somewhat ashamed to say that the main word processing computer we had in 1991 at my journalism college actually used 8" disks. I remember you'd have to wait for it to spin up before you could access the data. It would make this creeeeaking noise too.

Our other word processors were TRS80's. The 100 models:

As you can guess the Journalism college had no money.

Also, remember how delicate the 5.25's were? If you dared touch them, the data was toast.

Yeah... Infact I do... I never owned a system that used them because I was still stuck using cassette tapes before I could afford a disk drive (which truned out to be 5.25).

A child-hood friend of mine still has the 8" diskes at his place, stored away. His dad gave him his Tandy computer when we were kids. He went on to own a TRS-80 Color Computer a little later on and we would have fights over who's computer was better.... I still believe Commodore rules.

RULES... I TELL YA... RULES....... lol

I remember over the summer, I was helping in cleaning the office when I found one of those 5" floppies. We all got a good laugh at it. It had some version of Lotus or something on it.

And it all came directly off the top of my head. I'm going to have to create a mock ad for that! Or a small series of them. ^^
