Out of Sequence

on Saturday, November, 19, 2005 6:57 PM
I noticed something in TRON last night. There is a brief scene that is out of sequence in the film.

At the end of the Tower Guardian scene, TRON and Yori slip out and get to her solar Sailer simulation and escape. We see that entire sequence up to the point where the Sailer blasts away at full speed.

Then, and only, then do they flash to Sark and his Lieutenant who asks what Sark wants done with the Tower Guardian.

Sark's answer is to take him to a holding area and to rez up the carrier for pursuit.

It's pretty obvious that that scene was intended to appear before TRON and Yori get the Solar Sailer out of the hanger, or maybe just as they blast out of the hanger.

My guess is that they moved it out of sequence because they had the carrier in the scene alrady and people would just take it as "speeding up" rather than creating the carrier.

Hmm - never picked up on that myself. I'd have to watch it again and see if it looks odd to me.

Let's see if my computer will cooperate and allow me to choose which scene to select this time... it kept crapping out on me earlier...

Ok, it cooperated!

I just watched that sequence and nothing seemed out of place to me. I took it as Sark commenting to rez up the carrier for pursuit because the solar sailor simulation was so far ahead of them. So it made sense that they had to prepare for or rez up for pursuit since they now had to pursue the solar sailor that has gotten away from them. That makes sense to me anyway.

So the series of events worked for me.

What I always found odd is Dumont saying something like "I can't stand all that commotion" when TRON and Yori enter the I/O tower... when there really was no commotion at all. I think I read somewhere that originally TRON fought off grid bugs just before entering the tower - kind of like in the arcade game grid bug game. But without any commotion (in the film) before entering the I/O tower, that part always stood out as odd to me.

I always thought the "rezz up" comment to mean "go to full power", because the Carrier was falling too far behind the Sailer.

But I can see how you would think that, DT. "Rezz up" could also mean create the Carrier, thus putting that shot out of place.

That's how I took that as well.

I always thought it was supposed to be a joke of sorts, being that he's been isolated for so long that ANY activity was disturbing him.

What made it stand out for me was the fact that it's quite a while after Sark says "Take him" in the IO tower, and his Lieutenant would most likely have asked that question sooner rather than later.

It seems like it's out of sequence.

The way I see that line is this: The MCP is slowly choking off communication with the Users - Dumont's is the only I/O tower still in operation, and only rarely used at that. He's become isolated and very very lonely - So when when not one, but *two* programs jump into the tower without warning, it IS commotion from his point of view. Sort of like how a pin falling can seem loud in an extremely quiet room.
