I was just talking about this last week with a bunch of people asking weither or not anime's art. My answer pretty much came down to this: Yes. The definition of art is so open ended that it can be pretty much interpreted in any way. But what we interpret as being art can be very limited. We close ourselves in boxes and fail to see they beauty of the very world around them. Here's an awesome example: Graffiti art. We see this on the sides of wall and things and to one with an open mind, we would call that art and admire it for it's beauty and the fact that the brick wall that it was painted on moves the world of the dull in to the world of the beautiful. But with our close minds, we fail to see something like that as being art. We call it "Vandalism." On one hand, they're accurate, but on the other hand, the wall probably needed some beauty and some creativity anyways. We see a lot of graffiti art over here on the sides of train cars coming from Toronto. There's actually a spot in my city that you can get a clear view of them and just sit there and admire them. You've got a lot of beautiful stuff over there! My professor is also one of these graffiti artists and he used to do this quite often while he was in Toronto (I completly forgot what his tag was) and he was really good at it. But when he got in to art school, the professor was so anal and said that his work was never considered art. That art to them was realism and so forth. To them, that was art and graffiti was far from it. As a result, my professor quit due to the fact that they were so closed minded. Another story of closed minded artists is something that happened to me. I would draw a lot of stuff and just love it. Back in highschool, we had only two art teachers, one loved my work and thought it was beautiful and that I had real talent for it. He constantly supported my work. The other was the polar opposite and nunfortunately, I was stuck in his class. I drew manga, he hated it and called it cartooning. He never refered to it as art. I was totally slammed by this guy! He pointed to the other human xeroxes in the room who were just copying somebody else's work of art (Even though, the requirements just said for us to be creative and that we don't have to copy somebody else and that we could be origional.) and said pretty much along the lines of "You see them drawing that (Realistic) picture? That's art. Your stuff is just cartooning!" That was just insulting! I put my time and effort in to something just only to be called a cartoonist and NOT an artist and that my work wasn't worthwhile because it wasn't art. So I went another direction and did surrealism. He also hated that. Matter of fact, our final assignment, we had to put together a painting for the goverment examplar documents (Essentially, teaching document that shows examples of what's an "A," "B," "C,"....ect). We were informed to NOT put our name in the artwork. I put a lot of work in mine and I was proud of it. Yet again, it was a surrealist piece. When he brought it over to a panal of teachers from the government (Which were the MOST ANAL bunch of people I've ever heard of) and told them that they should be "Not to hard on her because she just a cartoonist!" He said he did it as a favour for me. But looking in comparison and having been able to step back, that comment probably made thing a lot worse for me than ever helping me. But then again, the joke's on him because my name is indeed in the painting. It's in there as a "subliminal" message. So if I ever wanted to find it again and prove to people that it was mine, I just have to point out where the message is and show them how it works. I had way too much pride invested in that to end up as just a number. He was definately most close minded and insulting that I just did that. He frequently insulted me and tried to bring me down saying that my stuff was never art. But he's wrong, in every way is it art. There's no way that it isn't! i've given up trying to revery this thread to it's original intent, so i'm just going to go with the tide. but please, don't hesitate on the comments. the more people that like Charlie's art, the merrier she'll be...anyway
woah, that's a lot of writing.
but it's a lot of writing that i agree with.
i myself am about as arty as a... a word has yet to be invented to describe how un-arty i am
but i, like a lot of people love art
there is a guy from finland, i think, called Kimmo Lemetti, who runs a web based comic called "gone with the blastwave." not only is the comic extremely funny, but it's the actual art of the comic that i like the most. and after looking at his deviantart account, i couldn't resist putting some of his work on my wall.
for those interested,
here is his website.
as i said, i love his art. words of wisdom from...

I checked out your friend's artwork around the time this thread first started out... but didn't want to post in the middle of a "what is art" discussion.
She definately shows a lot of imagination and talent in her work and should keep with it!
Now, to resolve the what is art matter and put it to rest for once and for all.
I know Art when I see Art.
I don't know why there has to be so much damn philosophical discussion over the matter.
I mean, what's the problem here?
Why is this so freakin' difficult to understand?
You need me to spell it out for you all?
You REALLY need to know what Art looks like?
Jeez, I can't believe I have to go out of my way to educate everyone!
But, somehow, I feel it is my duty.
Ok, the final end to the discussion...
(just scroll down a bit)
...

...
HERE is Art!
And that's the REAL one too.

Is that Chuck Close, Todd?
Anyways, I think once you bring up "What's art?" its all going to get a little more phylisophical from here. ^^; You can't blame us. It's an interesting topic!

No... Art Bell!
Hence the Art angle.
I guess not everyone will know who that is though. He's got (or used to have at least) a really cool radio show where he talks about aliens, ghosts, and the paranormal. Very cool stuff, even if many of his callers seem to be a little on the I'll believe anything EXCEPT the most logical solution side.

Logical answer first. If that fails to explain anything, then jump to the not so obvious one. But then again, that's another conversation on to itself. Let's stick to art for now....

Don't worry. For us, your sillyness is an expectation. It just wouldn't be a phylisophical TS thread without it!

And so ends my long rant on the meaning of (life) art. |
Well, let me first say that my sister was a painting major at a college nearby here, and all I ever heard from her about school was how closed minded the tecachers were. (Well, and other things, but it's not exactly important at the moment)
Basicly, in my experiance, I've found that while Art classes and whatnot can teach you valueable things, they seem to be somewhat of an oxymoron.
But let me explain why: to put it simply, I define art as a means of self-expression. Of course, the encompasses drawing/painting, (that is, the 'traditional' arts) writing, music, and of course the medium that I invest my time in, film. To say that you can't produce stuff in these mediums that's simply for the money is, of course, false. It happens all the time.
The problem is that people often either have a very defined view of what they think is art, or have very little clue at all as to what it is. I think how you define art is part of becoming what I define as an artist...
