Satellite Radio

on Sunday, October, 16, 2005 9:33 PM

I just hooked up my Sat. Radio (Sirius) in my car. The sound seems..... well..... OK I guess. When they talk though it sounds like a Real Audio feed.

I am a tad bit dissapointed it doesn't sound as good as FM.

Anyone else have this? Do you get used to it?

I have this on my new PC. It actually sounds quite decent (Provided that I also have a decent set of speakers (With an overly powerful subwoofer. ^^;; )) over here. Maybe it's just that car speakers just aren't cut out for XM radio. I dunno.... I'd wait for the technology to mature a little bit more before you try it in your car.... that is IF the sound quality is bugging you that much...

Too late! It's already in there

Actually it's not that bad. It's just not as clear as FM. But the sheer number of choices (and the fact that there are no commercials) makes up for it.

Commercials absolutely drive me nuckin' futz.

Wierd; I thought satellite radio was supposed to be a higher-quality broadcast than either FM or AM.

Maybe something isn't hooked up correctly?

Dunno. I didn't hook it up. The music tends to sound "OK", but when they talk it sounds like a Real Audio feed. Maybe I will call them and ask them if that's normal.

Doesn't seem like it to me..... then again.... I am listening to it on a PC with a decent sound system.. I'm starting to think that there is a problem with your hookup..... unless since it IS your car, what if the reason why it sounds bad is because you're moving? The reason why I say this is because it used to be the same with car TV over here. Try listening to it while parked somewhere. It'll at least eliminate one possibility.... ^^;;

I don't have satellite radio on my car or PC, but I believe it uses similar sound compression methods as steaming media on the internet. The higher bandwidth, the better the audio. BUT it also depends on how it was coded and the bit rate of it. Often in music, it can be harder to pick out the sound of compression - that digi-hollow like noise you might be referring to when they speak.

I think it's something like that anyway.

I asked some people around here, and I guess there is a schmattering of different ways you can install/configure this.

The way I have it is the unit broadcasts to my stereo through an FM channel. So there's going to be some loss there. I guess different channels give better quality so I can try that.

If you opt for the straight install to the car stereo I guess your quality improves dramatically.

I have Sirius, so I went to sirius.com and in the upper right is a little "listen" icon. That will let you log in and start streaming.
