Sad, but hardly a surprise. Disney/BVG have made clear they don't care about TRON any more.

So I guess I'll have Turok to look forward to instead, in the Unreal 3 engine. Ooooh. Pretty. Boring, but pretty.

Pretty, good. Creativity, double unplus good.

So... was it going to be a movie or a game?
I didn't know anything about a 3.0 happening anyway.

Oh well... time to rant a bit. *ahem*

TRON's influence is everywhere in society.
People still love it (and not just us that post here)!
What un-TRON-loving knuckleheads at Disney OK
toilet-floater projects like Meet the Deedles and Cabinboy
but won't greenlight a money-in-the-bank TRON film?
Are they "TRON is for nerds" kind of closed-minded people?
Just because THEY don't like it means it won't do well?
Well #!&$ them! TRON will never die!
I'll do my part to make sure of that!

By the way... does anyone know how much a TRON
licence costs for the rights to make something official?
If THEY refuse to make any more money from a sure thing,
maybe someone else (mabe me?) will.

They could have done a Leisure Suit Larry kind of thing where Part IV got "lost".

Oh well. I guess I'd rather TRON ended with 2.0 anyway since I helped in some way to make it. Too bad the nitwits at BVG don't know how to make a top rated game sell!

I'd dropped several hints about this in the past, but now that I know it's dead, I'm shouting from the rooftops.

Graham Hopper, the guy in charge at BVG apparently does not like TRON at all. Funny, he did before they f---ed up on TRON 2.0. I've got a picture to prove it.

Do you really think they are gonna make Turok a viable franchise again? I see a giant L attached to that one too.

Amen.....sort of.

Disney will never give TRON up for others to use. All we can hope for is the copyright running out and becoming public domain I suppose. Anybody know how that works? We'll probably all be old and/or dead then, but perhaps a new generation will make it fly! We just need to keep the torches lit.

I went and looked at the sites for known active TRON projects, and the main one, TRON 2.0 for Gizmondo, is also gone.

No mention on the Gizmondo site, and no mention on the Tiger Telematics site.

All I can say is.....SHIT!!!

Nope. I've gone on record elsewhere, that Turok will BOMB. Just watch. I don't care how pretty a face they put on it (Unreal 3 graphics), it will be a stinker and hardly anyone will be interested in it. Just like the previous ones.

My guess (and it's just a guess), is that Tiger was paying BVG to do the game. I read somewhere that Tiger was paying a whole slew of developers to make games for the Gizmondo. But Tiger is now in financial trouble (surprise), and I gather that Tron was one of the first titles to be dropped.

I think the only hope now, for Tron, is for us to appeal to people in the Disney side of things. Maybe someone in there would come around, if they saw enough fans supporting and wanting Tron products. Because it sounds like BVG really couldn't give a shit any more . . . pardon the language.

I guess I'd rather TRON ended with 2.0 anyway
In a way, I kind of agree . . . I'd rather see it end on a high note with Tron 2.0, than see the game handed to another developer that doesn't understand Tron, and watch them screw it up. Because, Monolith really GOT Tron. They nailed it.

Damn, that sucks big time.

Well, now we can add the TRON 2.0 expansion pack and TRON 3.0 to the list of other potentially great games that didn't happen, like Babylon 5: Into the Fire and Freespace 3.

"I'm feeling Lucky" on a Google search for "public domain" get me nowhere.
(I never get lucky. I have to work for it! )
But the SECOND link on a real search got me this which explains things nicely:
http://www.unc.edu/~unclng/public-d.htm

So... TRON is protected until (hmmm... 1982 + 95 = ?) 2077!

It would have been interesting to see a Tron 3.0 or a 4.;0 for continuing sequels for the game itself. I hope that something will come up. Even if it is not a game sequel here. Tron is a good thing.

Yes, I read it the same way, Meatsack.

I feel the logic and legalities behind copyrights and patents are fundamentally and morally flawed. Why? Well just because I work for a corporation and have a great idea and invent something, it does not mean the corporation should be able to take it and capitalize on it forever (or at least my lifetime) without me or my family getting anything more than my typical paycheck. So they make millions and I make my yearly salary. Yeah, real fair.

Yes, they funded it. Yes, they are entitled to it for a while because of this. But I shouldn't forever be locked out of something I envisioned and created ... should I? I know there's no simple solution, but there's got to be a better middle-ground than what we have today.

Sometimes even actors get screwed. I heard in an interview that Elijah Wood only got about $100,000 or $200,000, per his contract, for his role in the Lord of the Rings trilogy -- while the movie itself and everything surrounding it has made billions. Ummmmm, yeah... real fair.

And then there's Steven Lisberger. He practically invented Tron, and yet Disney will likely never ever let him do anything with what he envisioned; no matter how non-profitable they feel it is. Sorry, but that's just morally wrong. Big business sometimes sucks because the little people are powerless. I had to sign an agreement at work recently that said pretty much any invention or patentable item I create on company time or equipment belongs to the company. Period. Sorry, but that's just not fair. YES, I do want to move the company toward the future and do the best I can do and let the company profit from my ideas... and I will let them. But it just doesn't seem fair when you think about it. "Sign on the dotted line here or you're fired," basically. Yup, we're powerless.

Oh, and all this talk about copyrights reminded me of this: http://writ.news.findlaw.com/commentary/20020305_sprigman.html.
Mickey Mouse Goes to Washington - Back in 1998, representatives of the Walt Disney Company came to Washington looking for help. Disney's copyright on Mickey Mouse, who made his screen debut in the 1928 cartoon short "Steamboat Willie," was due to expire in 2003, and Disney's rights to Pluto, Goofy and Donald Duck were to expire a few years later.
Disney was going to lose the copyright on Mickey Mouse (and other notable characters) in 1998 because the copyright length was only 75 years at that time. Disney got it extended to be 95 years. Yay Disney!! Actually, I can see both sides of the story, really. But for things like Tron where I think Disney pretty much just funded someone else's idea (Steven's), is it morally right that they get to reap the rewards of his creative genius for 95 years (or more, if Disney applies for another copyright extension)?

What do you think?
