Demos can only play with other like demos. for example, the 1.0 demo can only play against 1.0 demos and not 1.2, etc. Doubt there are many people doing that these days.

If I were to purchase the retail version to play online does it cost extra to do so?

The only costs to play TRON 2.0 PC are the initial costs to buy it, and as Mutoid Man pointed out, that's pretty low.

Fox Xbox TRON 2.0 you do need to pay for Xbox Live.

I really need to get the new computer though. There are two games that I can't play without it: Tron 2.0 and Starship Titanic.

A piece of advice: Even if you don't have a powerful enough computer now, buy the games you want to play anyway while they're new and cheap. You can (almost) always play them later.

I bought only three or four games in anticipation of buying a PC back in the late 1990's, and I wish I had bought a bunch more because now I have to buy them on eBay and sometimes that can be expensive for the very rare and sought-after games, and it can take forever for certain titles to show up on auction.

It took quite a while and cost a lot to get a good copy of Zaero, and it took even longer (but was much cheaper) to get a copy of Archimedean Dynasty that included copies (in perfect condition as luck would have it) of the instruction and weapons manuals.

At one time, the Official v1.042 patch worked on XP only. (Such a smart idea, too. ) Later, it was re-released and worked on any version of Windows.

So at one time, Deathmatch was an XP only feature. But now, anyone can play it when they install the latest patch.

There's also an Unofficial v1.042 patch, and it's the one I prefer to use.

When Microsoft pays a company like BVG what they paid to get that, you do it, simply put. I agree it was dumb, but the money made dumb a good thing for BVG.

I know, but at what cost to customer relations? A lot of people were very upset about the whole XP-only issue, at the time. They could have at least put an "XP only" notice in the patch (that didn't pop up when you were actually trying to install it), when they first released it. But they didn't.

Well, at least we got a new Deathmatch feature . . . that's the upshot of it.

The "XP Only" notice was definitely there on the TRON 2.0 website; it wasn't a secret by any stretch of the imagination, all anyone had to do was read.

Not quite, MutoidMan. You need to know the history of what happened with this patch.

BVG released the patch on FilePlanet a few days prior to it appearing on the Tron 2.0 site. And the file description on FilePlanet, did not mention the XP requirement. Meanwhile, plenty of people had downloaded and tried installing it . . . only to discover it wouldn't work unless they had XP.

Naturally, people were upset about this. It wasn't until a few days later that the patch appeared on the Tron 2.0 site with an "XP Only" notice. But by then, the damage had been done.

Not to mention . . . even with the notice, it's pretty galling of a company to release a patch with a new game mode, and expect you to upgrade to a new version of Windows in order to play it. I don't ever recall another company doing such a stupid thing.

Probably this is my way of thinking here. And no flaming on this please. Would it not have been better/easier in the first place to make it all. Than to just restrict it to Win XP only at that time? I mean it would have made sense to do it that way in the first place no?

Redrain,

Close, but no cigar! File Planet was not supposed to have that patch. It was only supposed to appear on the TRON site. I don't recall the exact circumstances of how File Planet obtained it, but it was something that was not supposed to happen due to BVGs deal with MS. It was supposed to be an XP exclusive for 3 months and then go wide. I think someone in Marketing sent it out to someoneat a Magazine who passed it on to File Planet.

A dumb idea, but as I said, the Micro$oft ca$h was just too good for BVG to pass up. So they did it.

Karl,

I've said this three times now, but Microsoft paid for a three month exclusive to have an XP only patch. That's why it went this way.

Well, regardless of whether it was a mistake or not: it happened. And it was a bad idea. Money or no.

Expecting customers to buy a new version of Windows to use a game patch, was a little much to ask. (And at the time of its release, no one was sure when it would officially stop being an "XP Only" patch.)

Thank you for the insight, though. I didn't know the release to FilePlanet was a mistake. I thought they just sent the wrong version . . . not that FilePlanet wasn't supposed to have it.

Getting back to a more cheerful note . . .

It was good to see you in Light Cycles, Traahn. Hope I can meet some more Tron-Sector regulars there. I must've just missed Jade, then.

No worries . . . I have a sense of humor and can take my lumps.

At least I learned something new out of all of this: BVG makes lots of mistakes.
