Something in your video make me think of "Close Encounters" but I see that came out in 1977 so that's probably not it. The other movie I'm thinking of is "The Black Hole" but it too came out in 1979. In both these cases its more a feeling that makes me want to associate your video with them then anything I can really put my finger on.
However there is a game out there that Atari released in 1980 called Battlezone that really really remindes me of part of your video. It was a very good game by the way...
Still racking my mind on the movie. It JUST hit me... and again it's something you said "Call me". Did the movie come out in 1982 and have 2 letters for a name? I'm not sure I'm seeing that in the video though... If I'm right... what am I missing?

Anyway, good guess, but the movement of my stick figure has nothing to do with the film TRON at all. In design it was inspired by that bit on CAPT (got tired of spelling it out all the time). In movement... well the answer is elsewhere on my site. You will not find the answer on any of the On the Cutting Room Floor of Oblivion pages though. You'll have to dive deeper than that.

Todd, I TRULY hope I get to meet you one day! You show an amazing amount of creativity and pop culture savvy with your video!
It had everything! Star Wars references, Tron, hot cyber babes dancing in go-go boots and tight skirt, floating and singing heads and the shaky cam movements of the original Wang Chung video!
Flippin' sweet, yo! If you ever need an actor for your work, you just give the ol' PimpDragon a call! I'd work for you any day, yo!
Great job!

Thank you! I'm glad it was worth the long download time. And sorry about the file size - I compressed it as much as I could, but this kind of flashy video doesn't compress well without compromising image quality.
wwwmwww Wrote:The singing clay heads make me think of the ship from "Battle Beyond the Stars". Is that it? |
Naa. Those were based on a very simple sketch I jotted down one evening. I actually sketched the alien head, two variations of triangle heads, and a dancing horn-head. Only the google-eye'd alien head design ended up materializing. I may scan the original sketch some time and post it on my site. It's right here next to my computer on an old scrap paper.
wwwmwww Wrote:However there is a game out there that Atari released in 1980 called Battlezone that really really remindes me of part of your video. It was a very good game by the way... |
Yep! The vector landscape of Battlezone was the inspiration for the background with the running stick-figure. And that game ROCKED! I LOVED that game back in the day! I also used to have it for my Commodore 64 and played it a lot. Wasn't as good as the arcade version, but still fun game.

Nope. No E.T. references in the video.

You'll need to identify the blank to identify the other 80's pop reference. Do you need a hand with that one? Again, if you figure it out, call me on it. He he he.

Deathstar, Bit (in green), and... that other face is that of "Herman". He's a very unique character I invented a couple of years ago and have yet to unleash on the world. I did a test animation of him, but never went beyond that. Only a handful of people have seen the test animation. It's on my list of productions to make in the future... just hard finding the time. Herman is kind of crass, potty humor though - nothing I'd be comfortable promoting here at The Sector. BTW - He's got a cameo in Just Turn Around as well

Thank you. I really wasn't sure if people would actually make that out or not. I thought it was kind of an odd and cool item, so I took some footage of it for the video's original, more simple concept... and then scrapped it. In the end, it resurfaced in the credits - I thought it would look cool at the very end of it... and perhaps give kind of an odd message at the same time.

Yes, very cool. If one could see what that stick figure did behind your head that would have given it away. Considering all the flash and lights that come form behind there maybe he didn't dive fast enough. LOL

Oh I'm sure that's so dripping with clues I should know. Something tells me we aren't talking about a movie at all, is that correct? The use of pop and hand in the same sentence when talking about the 80's make me think of Michael Jackson's Thriller but it's been a while since I've seen that video. Am I getting warmer?

Short on time tonight, so I have to do the quickie response.
To wwwmwww:
I will try to get an image of my sketched ideas (like the alien head, etc.) posted soon. Just short on time right now. Just rough sketches though.
The stick figure really didn't do anything behind my head - that was as far as I animated it. That part of the video (stick figure and BG) was actually a visual demo from a few years back that I never finished. Put it in this video because it looked cool. Had to do something with the figure when it ran behind my head, so I zapped it and blew it up! He he he.
No references to Thriller in my video. But you are in the right genre, close to the right year as well.
Wow - you found my tag in The Control Room! Good job!
The image you thought was my ironing board was actually the floor - in other words, yes, something real and not CG.
The image of me with my arms extended is really just me in my living room. The living room looked boring, so I masked it up like that. My entire silly dance took place in the living room... I digitally transported myself to the Planet Oddland Del Toddo.
The image of the clay alien heads does indeed contain the ironing board in the very background, moving opposite the computer grid imagery. Yep - you found it! The ironing board gave that BG more sense of depth than without it. It's a darkened, negative image of the ironing board surface.
Wow - you even found an Easter Egg in Just Turn Around! Yep - put my face in there. Actually, the pranking manager is wearing a nametag with my face on it too.
You missed Herman though - he's kind of hard to spot. Why don't you monitor the situation and see if he shows up better next time. Actually, you probably saw Herman, but didn't recognize his odd shape - he's kind of thumb shaped (not exactly human).
Your interest in studying my work and finding the hidden goodies is really cool! It's really cool you've found that much entertainment in my work! Feels great to have my work appreciated and enjoyed!
To The PimpDragon:
My home is on the game grid!
I only WISH!
Check my profile.
The distance is over 500 miles and would be a good 9 hour drive.
But who knows what the future holds.
My next project might be The Subwoofer Project(working title). I actually have people who are interested in that one. Three characters. But not sure if it will materialize - I've been so very damn busy as of late! Grrr. Need more hours in the day! Damn REAL world!
I've got other projects though. Not sure they're worth traveling that distance over, but if you want your donuts, coffee and DVD THAT much - I'd be happy to have ya aboard! They ARE good donuts, you know
I still want to do a TRON related project, but that would require a LOT of time and planning. Don't have time for that now, but maybe some time in the future. I do know a certain 3D computer animator who has been showing some impressive work on the game grid.
Wow - that was one LONG "quickie" message, huh?

Thanks. Something else I noticed. Those images on the control room monitor from Star Wars remind me of the background that's moving to the left in these shots
Is that where that image came from or is that something else. If so it's another Death Star reference.

I was trying to make out images on name tags as I thought that would be a good place to hide something but you can't really make them out in the video.

In that case I think I did see him. Is that him on the monitor to the right?
The image is small enough that you can't really tell what it is but it sure looks out of place compared to what's seen on the other monitors in this video.

Carl - you had asked about the sketched version of what later became the googly-eyed clay alien head.
Here it is:
And here it is under construction:
And just for fun, the Armatron shot. Not exactly a sophisticated set. Our "spare" room - where my computer is, bunch of other odds and ends, and my some of the wife's wardrobe behind the green cardboard (where my treadmill now stands).
Yep - that's exactly how I shot that part! You can see the tripod on the right, without the camera on it (black pole-looking thing). Those clamp lamps are GREAT for lighting! And they only cost about $6.00! I've got 6 of those things. Oh, and my TRON photo is there in the upper-right corner of the image.
EDIT: Oops - I almost forgot. That is manipulated circuitry imagery behind the pulsating sphere wire frame, not anything from the screen in the control room. order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

I hope you add those photos to your site and make a little "Making of" section to that video. Love seeing how you did the effects.

Actually I just use standard GE white-coated 200W light bulbs. Are "pure white" bulbs much different? Are those the kind that are supposed to offer better illumination of color?
Sketch Wrote:I hope you add those photos to your site and make a little "Making of" section to that video. Love seeing how you did the effects.
Again Excellent job on the video Todd. |
Thank you, again! And I have been pondering the thought of doing a making of page(s) for that video. I have about a zillion stories to tell of the making - it was indeed a learning experience EACH step of the way. I also have many (but sadly not all) low-res experiment and preview renders of various things from their very rough start to their more polished version. I wish I had saved ALL my preview renders, but they started taking up a lot of room and I figured I'd never look at them again.
But yeah, I might do a making of section for this. Finding the TIME to do so might be tricky though. Perhaps a little at a time or something. I wonder if many other people would enjoy reading through such things.

Thanks - I appreciate that! It seems I hit the mark - excellent!
redrain85 Wrote:So that's how you did that shot . . . very creative! I never would have suspected that such simple materials and tools were used in that manner, to create such slick video. |
Well, that's the thing, really. EVERYTHING is just an illusion. NOTHING appears in the video as it is in real life. Hollywood is the same way - they just have superior tools and better physical working conditions, etc. But everything (Hollywood or any form of visual entertainment) is just an illusion. The "magic" is when you can take some odds and ends and weave them in to strange and wonderful productions! In reality, just a toy robotic arm on top of an ironing board with some green cardboard behind it is really BORING. But in video-land, you end up with a giant robotic arm that charges up with energy and zaps some weird dancing dude causing his skeleton to show through like a cartoon character. Now THAT'S fun!

Most of them have been outed here, but there are a few others in there. Some of them will be impossible to catch when viewed at regular speed, and they're really only in there amuse me. There's even kind of an audio Easter Egg in there. Can YOU see it? Well, of course not - it's a sound Sorry - that was funny to me for a moment.

Not sure about white-coated ones, which if I'm thinking is the ones with the white coat on the glass to even out the light. Sounds like they work well. been using GE "reveal" bulbs cause they don't cost too much and do have more pure white light than the old yellowish bulbs I used to get. This really came to my attention when I moved to my apaprtment, which sports a light-yellow with white-peach trim interior paint job. The regualr bulbs made the place more yellow so I needed a pure light to draw with. These reveal bulbs have a light-purple glass tint, which I guess is what eliminates the yellow from the light coil.
