I tried burning a DVD last night (for the first time) and thought I would take two 600mb mpg files and fit them both on a DVD (4.5 gb) for playback. However, after I import one file the DVD says it's full. It can take up more space if that 600mb file is using a divx compression codec. Standard dvd players read mpeg-2 which is a very large file format. If you just want computers to read the disc, just make a data dvd then the files can stay in the small divx codec.

It's odd. I guess if you have an existing MPG, my DVD burning software will automatically make it the biggest, best quality DVD image, without even giving you an option. For my MPG's that was about 1 hour of video on a DVD.
I can reencode them using TMPEG to make them smaller, of course TMPEG isnt forever free to reencode mpg's.
I am not trying to pirate anything, just messing around with some concert footage and videos I have.
