Okay, this might seem like a very oddball topic but I'm curious about the old 8-Track technology from the 60's and 70's era. I've done some research on the net, but there are some minor things I want to know that I wondered if anyone here might could awnser who has used it in the past. I'm interested in knowing what the technology was like when it was new and in use, both in home and automotive. How was the sound quality of 8-Track compared to other audio. I want to know the pros, cons, hype, and mystic behind this now obsolete technology.

I still have somewhere down in the garage at my place a receiver that has an 8-track player in it. And I guess during the time when the were coming out were stereo. Mind you playing it toda sounds more mono than stereo. Since the usage was great on the one that I have here. It was a good technology at the time. Its similar to waht we still use today as cassette players.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

If I remember correctly, the sound quality was a little better than an LP, but not as good as a cassette. There was a lot of tape hiss.
One of the MAJOR annoyances (to me anyways) was that the 8-track tape was split into 4 parts, no matter what. If you bought a pre-recorded tape it was not uncommon to have songs chopped in half. Yeah, sure..they would 'fade-out' the song before the track change and then 'fade' it back in after it switched, but it was still annoying.
