Wendy Carlos' "Rediscovering Lost Scores Vol 2"

on Friday, May, 27, 2005 4:24 PM
Not sure if this has been mentioned in here yet. If not, just a heads up that Wendy Carlos is in the process of releasing two volumes of music, filled with rare unreleased and alternate versions of stuff. Volume 2 features some material from her Tron score. I believe volume 1 is released next week. Not sure about volume 2's release date.

Holy Crap!

That's good news! I did miss that on her site. I am REALLY excited about new music from The Shining, Clockwork Orange and Tron.

But also NEW music I have never heard. I am a big Wendy Carlos fan and this is awesome news. I will definately be buying this CD.

I'm interested in hearing her unused music from "Split Second" as well!

Thanks for the heads-up, as this is a great find!

I picked up Vol I today. Going to listen to it now. I noticed something odd though.. the CD says something about "watermarks" on the tracks. What does that mean?

F****** Hell! I don't believe it! Yippee! The Tron soundtrack is a big snatch of my own life' soundtrack. I worship every track on that score; to think there would ever be anything extra is hard to fathom. I'm sounding a tad melodramatic, but I don't care. I can't wait. Thanks for sharing the news.

Maybe now we'll get that piece of music (when Alan goes down to the lab) in full at last. Yes!

So far, Vol 1 is great, but it's mostly shorter clips. So those looking for a true "score" CD will not really find one here. It's mostly for fans of the original score who are interested in hearing the "lost" clips from those scores.

There are some interesting Tron-like sound effects in the shining score.

If you're a fan of the Shining score or Clockwork Orange, I definately reccommend it.

If you're looking for similar-sounding scores to Carlos' Tron soundtrack, you might want to check out some Michael Tippett stuff.

If you can find Tippett: Symphonies Nos 2 & 4, check out the first two tracks: Allegro vigoroso, and Adagio molto e tranquillo.

These are very Tron sounding, although it does lean more towards Carlos' Digitlal Moonscapes. Nevertheless, fans of Carlos will no doubt enjoy these.

I'll be sure to get a copy for the unearthed TRON tracks.

"We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. J. J. Adams
"C is for cookie. That's good enough for me." - Cookie Monster
"If money is the root of all evil, I'd like to be a bad, bad man." - Huey Lewis & the News

Most recent PC game collection update: 04/12/2012. Check it out!

Yeah, I'll be picking up Volume 1 asap, and definitely looking forward to Volume 2. I'm not expecting a whole lot, but to share in the previous post sentiments - I've known every last note of the existing score release for so many years, that ANYTHING new will be a huge shock to the system...abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Oh hey, also on a similar subject, check out this bit of news: http://www.wired.com/news/digiwood/0,1412,67668,00.html
Too bad they couldn't get any Wendy Carlos interviews for the documentary, but it still interesting to me. Think I'll have to check it out.

Some information about Vol2 which will contain the Tron tracks from Wendy Carlos' website:

About this volume: Due to unforseen problems at the distributor, ESD informs us that this album has been delayed by 6-7 weeks from the promised end of June release date. In mid-August it will become available in all the usual stores and web stores. But we also have good news. As a courtesy to those who browse these web pages, East Side Digital is making available copies from a special advance shipment of volume two CDs for direct sale through their website, as we indicate on our discography page. Starting immediately you can purchase copies there in advance of the revised official release!

Has anyone orderd the copy online from the ESD store? If so, how long did it take for you to get it?

I see a quote from Wendy's site reads this:
12-Lightcycle Games

It's unfortunate that this stimulating music was jettisoned late in production in favor of only sound effects behind an important scene. While the effects are well done, they lack the added dimension music provides. This was an ideal place for the angular feel of quartal intervals and harmonies (built on a musical fourth). Jorge Callandrelli provided extensive help in assembling and "orchestrating" most of the TRON music, following my detailed "short scores." Contrast this excerpt with the reworked and extended final shape the piece took on as Jupiter's moon, "Io", in my Digital Moonscapes suite.

I've heard this 'lost track' on the Tron 20th Anniversary DVD. Unfortunately, I disagree with Wendy. Although this track is great, as are all her Tron tracks, there's just something very pleasing about having a lull in the music for the light cycle sequence. Just hearing the sound effects of them is awesome. So to me, I can't imagine it any other way. (Note: I'm sure I'd maybe be arguing the exact opposite if they had actually used this track in the original light cycle sequence.)

I agree. I would have to choose it without the music. Maybe that's because it's so ingrained now without it, that adding it seems somewhat alien.

A couple of times I tried imagining that scene with the music while watching it and I have to agree with you guys, it's better without it. It might have worked in theory, but the impact of the scene totally comes from the onscreen action and sound effects, IMO. It's still very cool music though.

and dammit, I'm still holding out hope that there will be a Tron movie sequel and with Wendy's music behind it.

Another borrowed idea from Star Wars, particualrly from the lightsabre scenes: no music during one-on-one battle scenes. Or so I think.
