This was posted earlier today over at the Tron20.com forums:
As for getting the SDK or Source code? It would all depend on whether or not there was a big enough audience to merit a release of that nature. Send those letters and emails. |
It was in response to a request for an SDK or the source code for Tron 2.0. Here's the full quote:

It’s a work of ART. It is an immersive game that leaves you thrilled, compelled and determined to look around the next corner. I recommend to everyone I know to play it at least once to experience it.
We are watching and we are here. We’ve replied, maybe not as a Moderator but we did reply, we worked as users with you all. It was great to see this community grow. The site had become self sustaining with users helping programs, that’s the whole point of the game and this site isn’t it? We gave you a space to work out issues with each other via a website. We were always here. We all did our little part of fitting the pieces of the puzzle together, albeit some helped more than others; but we normally got the issue resolved. In most instances it was simply finding that sweet-spot where software and hardware work together so the game could run smoothly.
As for getting the SDK or Source code? It would all depend on whether or not there was a big enough audience to merit a release of that nature. Send those letters and emails.
We are and have always been just an email or phone call away: interactive.support@bvinteractive.com or 1.877.487.6620.

I've sent in my request as well. Too bad I didn't bag a copy of the source before I left BVG! Wouldn't have mattered anyway.
They will never do this because they aren't smart enough to know how to grow a game. They let all of the TRON games die on the vine.

To say something positive and look like they care? There is money involved in releasing the SDK. Money they have to spend. Since the titles didn't perform, they won't spend that money to release it.

There was an estimate of a minimum of $20,000 just to get it in shape to release. It's not as easy as you think.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

Taking Money for the source? How did they think they can handle it? If it would be an application ok, they can do some copy-protection on it, but on simple ASCII-Files which can be copied without any probs? How did they want to tell who owned the original and who not, or that it is not shared as only one needs to buy it and then share it all over. Most producers know this and this is the reason why they release SDK's or sources most times free. BVG just show once again that they have no real plan how to handle a community. Really sad, as communities and online-gaming is the market of the future.

Karl,
No, you are not reading me right.
In late 2004 there was a discussion I was part of about releasing the source code.
In that conversation, the question was how much work would it take to get the code into a state where people could work with it easily. The estimate to do that was an off the cuff 20K.
Building documentation, organizing it into a package, getting it cleaned up for the consumption of the users.
Idsox,
They didn't want money from users, they needed to spend money to get it to the users. Money they were never going to spend, and I doubt they ever will.
And no, BVG has no clue how to build on a gaming community. Believe me, I've seen that.

OKay thats what I wanted to know. I wasn't too sure in what way you meant it there. Yeah that makes sense but still I wonder if it would have been worth it though. Even though the answer like you said is no way jose there.

But money for what? To upload just 15-16 MB to a site where to host? For a site to host the file, where there are so much sites doing it freely? If this is their argument then it is a weak one.order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

You really don't have all your facts together. Even though I have no loyalty to them anymore, I know that a code package had to be brought togehter in order to release it and it was going to cost that much to put it together.
I was there for the conversations, so I know what I am talking about. Do other companies just dump unstructured code out there or do they organize it and create a workable package first? Do you even know?abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Davetron your right we may not have all tha facts together on this one. But I do know of one company that has just released their latest OS out to market and its under the the Linux like licensing. I had posted on another board completely abuot this since I only heard about it this week. Sun Microsystem is doing this to see how well it will do for their Solaris 10 for both the Sparc and X86 cpu's there. I'll take a look into it where I had posted it just for the fun of it as well for read up over here.
I don't doubt you that it would cost that much. Since I was not in the know about things like this myself.
Note:> Here is the article I had posted in another group entirely. Didn't take me that long to find it. Its just an example of what I was refering to here. I know like you had said davetron that they will not do something like this. But its worth reading up even if its slightly off optic of not being tron.

We wanted you to hear it first.
Today, Sun announced that the source code for the Solaris Operating System--the most advanced operating system in the industry--will be made available through its OpenSolaris program. This milestone opens significant new opportunities for developers, customers, and partners. Open source Solaris means that the world will have full, free of cost access to the Solaris source code. Sun believes that the open source model is the right one because it benefits our customers. Open source means that our partners and customers will be able to more easily customize Solaris to fit their needs. It means developers ouside of Sun will be able to collaborate with our Solaris developers at Sun to make this great operating system even better.
Highlights of the announcement include:
Sun will release the code under the newly OSI-approved Common Development and Distribution License (CDDL), based on the Mozilla Public License (MPL)
Solaris Dynamic Tracing (DTrace) code - which changes the way you performance tune, debug, capacity plan, or simply understand your systems - is available now on http://www.OpenSolaris.org
Sun will form an advisory board consisting of two members from Sun, two members from the OpenSolaris pilot program, and one member from the broader open source community
