Am I the only one who's really uncomfortable about the idea of a program that can access your computer from anywhere over the Internet? I don't think there's an encryption code or security program that can keep that safe. Does anyone have any experience or anything with this?

Eh, there's those cracker tools, but the best way to deal with this: firewall... or actually unplugging the pc from the internet. XP
...however, yeah, it is a very scary thought.

I think there's a name for programs like that... "trojan horse".
I would certainly NOT participate in anything like that. It could be cool if everyone would play nicely, but we all know the FIRST people to "play" on this site (and with YOUR computer) would be hackers and crackers...

I don't go that way myself either. And een when I do have my firewalls up and all that. I still wouldn't do it. I go for my old back up SCSI tape drive over here anyday of the week. I have two main computers that have SCSI 2 cards in them. And a third that is linked up through my small netowrk over here. So for me simple as just running veritas and just backing them up.

Its either that SSI or smelling the fumes from the photography stuff in the darking room while developing the pictures in Black and white or in Colour. rust me either way your thinking of really goofy stuff there. I was always giggling and all that over here when I was near those trays of chemicals there.

For an application like this, the rule has to be: If it does not include source code then Do Not Trust It.
Even if it is not malware, remember that All Software Sucks.
Its been awhile, but we used to use VNC. I found a site claiming to be them but they seem to have gone commercial (GPL is stated on the web page at realvnc.com, but I dont see a source code link anywhere. Maybe its included with the download). Since there is no apparent source code, that leaves offshoots from the original program or new projects.
Here are two open source programs based on VNC

I have no experience with these specific programs. We used to run vnc through a SSH (encryption) tunnel, I do not know if the current programs encrypt internally or if you will want to set up the same way.
If this machine is important, find some paranoid people who have looked over (and can understand) the source code and potential flaws. Check also BugTraq for known exploits.
Gotomypc.com is mentioned positivly there in the couple of messages I looked at, so maybe its ok. See rule 1 though.
