A Holiday Gift for everyone...

on Thursday, December, 30, 2004 7:23 PM
A friend of mine pointed me to a Time-Life article that I see is already here at the sector.

http://www.tron-sector.com/articles/article.aspx?ID=131
In this article it states "Each Lightcycle is composed of 57 geometric forms that have been combined by a solid-modeling program. Because they contain fewer basic elements, the cycles were easier to animate than are models created with polygons."

Well my Lightcycle was made of several hundred geometric forms or what POV-Ray calls primitives and up till now has been VERY slow to animate. For the challenge and in the interest of future animations I'd like to make I wanted to see if I could make an accurate Lightcycle with only 57 primitives. I DID it and I believe I ended up with something even more accurate then what I had before and it only uses 54 primities and it renders in seconds.

And for the very first time, your Holiday treat, I'm going to share my code publically. Now you too can easily make your own Lightcycle scenes.

The code is here:
http://www.wwwmwww.com/TRON/LightCycle.pov
And you can get POV-Ray for free here:
http://www.povray.org/
All I ask is that if you use my code please give me credit and if you are willing please share your creations with me.

Enjoy and I hope everyone has a safe, healthy, and happy new year!!!!
Carl

Carl. I think we will all give credit where credit is due on things like this. And you have worked really hard on your lightcycles there with the PVO program that you used there.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Excellent!

Carl - I am very impressed!

Your previous light cycle renderings were very good, and these look... well outstanding. The only difference that I can see, and I'm not sure it is even different, is the side windows - they look more true to the film cycle's side windows shape.

I've been wondering why people have abandon the old-school ways of generating light cycles though. Even in the game TRON 2.0, HUNDREDS of polygons were used to make those - and they didn't even get the dimensions very accurate!

I don't know a whole lot about 3D renderings, but I do know the difference between "54 primitive" and hundreds of polygons. I remember seeing how the light cycles were originally created, using these "primitives" and the way basic shapes were used to create the look of the cycle. Now you've gone and recreated the cycles in all their original, basic but very cool, glory!

Again - I'm very impressed. I think it is very, very cool that you have recreated the cycles utilizing such similar methods as the originals, AND also shared that great formula with the rest of us!

I've archived the light cycle pov formula. As I skimmed through it, it looked surprisingly simple... I mean I actually understood what the commands were designed to do and the whole formula was relatively simple and short. Of course, I could have never done that kind of thing - I'm no 3D modeler or anything, but I do understand basic shapes, 3D coordinate use and the overall premise of 3D plotting.

I'm so glad you've FINALLY done what I don't think ANYONE else has done before (aside from the original animators of TRON). Great work, Carl! And if I ever get around to learning how to use sophisticated 3D animation tools such as POV-Ray and animate anything with your cycle model, I will definitely give you the great credit you deserve!

Jeez - should I download this free utility? I'm afraid it will be a little over my head. I'm really not very 3D savvy aside from the general knowledge of basic 3D coordinate plotting.

Excellent work on the light cycles (and method of rendering) though!

Shweet! I know I don't have a sophisticated enough eye to catch all the details and differences between this and earlier works, but I've heard of art being defined as "something I can't do". Well, I can't do that, so to me it's art.

Come on, you scuzzy data, be in there.

Thanks everyone. By the way, I discovered a small mistake in the code I had posted. It's now fixed incase you haven't downloaded the code yet. If you have all I have changed is the two places I had:

Shear_Trans(0.866025*x-0.5*y, y, z)

I replaced it with:

Shear_Trans(x-0.57735*y, y, z)

This cutout for the rear fender should have extended into the bike 86 units to avoid intersecting the rear tire. The first transformation above only extended it 86*0.866025 units or just over 74 units into the bike.

Sorry I didn't catch that before I posted the code.

Enjoy,
Carl

P.S. Here is the same image made with the corrected code:

The difference is most easily seen in the reflection of the orange bike.

Well you do have to know where to look. I thought the description of the error would have made the difference jump out. Granted the angle of this shot isn't the best for seeing the difference as it can only be seen in the reflection but it can be seen. Since a picture is worth a 1000 words I took the difference of the 2 picture with Paint Shop, brightened it up, and added it back to the second picture.

Does this help?

Enjoy,
Carl

Ah, there it is! Had to put all three images in Thumbs Plus and do a slideshow to see it. It's very obvious in the third picture kiddies!

Okay, I see the highlighted part in the 3rd one. Thanks! That is pretty hard to see in the reflection without it brightened up

I'm curious, wwwmwww - have you done any new animations using the new light cycle model yet? Since your computer can render this new model in just seconds, I was hoping you'd have some new animations to show us soon abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion
