SpaceShipOne successfully made it first X-Prize flight, actually (as yet unofficially) breaking the X-15's altitude record which has stood since 1963. The second flight is on October 2nd.
Also, Richard Branson has made a deal with Paul Alan and Burt Rutan to build more space ships for Virgin Galactic, Branson's new space tourism venture. Branson plans on beginning to operate flights into space possibly starting in 2007, for around $200,000 per person. The first ship will be named... the VSS Enterprise!!!
This is so cool!
Now all I need to do is win the lottery...

Heh, the VSS enterprise...
Afraid I'm still gonna have to wait a while for that space trip. I just hope it becomes cheap enough (or I become rich enough) before I reach the age of 50.

The second flight is a success!
Congratulations guys!
Now, since 7-Up is having a "First Free Flight to Space" contest next year, I'll have to start drinking a lot more 7-Up!

I remember hearing about the company that was working on this some time ago, and then nothing...
I thought it might be another GREAT (private sector) technological advance with energetic folks working behind it, that must have failed or the bottom fell out.
BUT I was so glad to find out the other day that it was indeed a success!
EXCELLENT! ** does Bill and Ted air guitar riff **
And their SECOND flight was ALSO a success?
EXCELLENT! ** does Bill and Ted air guitar riff again **
I think it's a great break through they have made. Sure, I'm looking forward to being able to take a ride in to space, but I'm more talking about what this might mean in terms of future technological break-troughs that we USED to have to wait for government agencies to invent/craft.
Well, I hope I'm not too old to enjoy (and to be able to afford) a trip in to space one day. No doubt about it - I REALLY would LOVE to take a trip out there in to... space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship X-Prize. Her continuing mission - to recognize new worlds, I/O with new civilizations - to boldly REZ where no one has REZZED before!

Did you catch the name of the show? I tried to have TiVo tape the first flight on CNN but it was delayed and when I got home to watch it nothing. And for some reason I was thinking the second flight was today so it looks like I've missed that one too. I'd love to see this story get a little more news coverage.

I personally thought Rutan's design would win. The guy's an aviation genious. So it was really no big supprise.

Thanks. I've now got TiVo set up to record it. It airs again on the 7th. I'll try to find some time to look for what's out there on the web.
Thanks again,

Rutan winning was all but a sure thing. He definitely has the most practical and more importantly the most scalable design.
The success of SpaceShipOne is a great step forward in making space access cheaper and therefore available to a wider group of people. If the market is there, this may lead to restarting development of a space plane that can go from NYC to Tokyo in a couple of hours, and possibly even into low Earth orbit to orbiting tourist destinations.
Now the US govt needs to build a permant colony on the Moon so we can begin mining for helium-3, which will enable us to make the practical fusion reactor a reality and allow us to radically cut dependance on foreign oil. A moon colony will also give us a great launching point for a manned mission to Mars, and would be a great place for a deep-space observitory.
Going to the Moon for good will require the development of a heavy-lift vehicle with about twice the lifting capability of the Saturn V, but with 30 years of advancements since the Saturn V and its incredible F-1's were designed, I don't see that as a problem.
