TRON : similar movies , virtual universe and more

on Wednesday, September, 15, 2004 11:42 AM
hello there ,

i'm new and it's my first post here. I try to search for topics regarding similar movies like tron but the search option does not work. So i'm creating a thread about it.

If it was already done , please paste the link here ! thanks.

i found the article on tron-sector regarding the tron-ish elements on tv (like the average automan serie) but I think it's incomplete. I emailed the author of the article.

Anyway , i'm posting here the other tron-ish elements i know.

First of all , there's a videoclip that is taking place in the universe of tron. It's a MUST SEE for all tron fans. The name is :

"Daft Punk - Scott Grooves - Mothership Reconnection.mpg"

i don't know where to buy it but i find it on some peer to peer programs like edonkey. But if you know where to buy it , please let me know

it's the video the most similar to tron , with a big budget. (kinda rip off , or hommage)

Or similar movies with wireframe universe or virtual reality universe (and computer generated ) that i know are :

- the thirteen floor (1999)
the poster of the movie show a man walking on a 3D wireframe world.
it was on screen the same year than dark city , existenz and the matrix .. critics though about another movie relating to virtual universe and it was underrated.

- lawnmower man (1992)
the suit of the lawnmower man looks a bit like and advance tron suit (with light on it). Many sequences takes place in a computer generated universe. One of the first movie regarding virtual reality as a videogame (with headset). stunning fx like a virtual race sequence. you also have a virtual motorcycle sequence in the bad sequel lawnmower man 2

- brainstorm (1983)
one of the first virtual reality universe , one year after tron , directed by douglas trumbull (he made the fx on 2001 and blade runner)

- the adventures of bukaroo banzai through the 8th dimension
bukaroo travels into the 8th dimension with wireframe landscapes in it

- johnny mnemonic
with keanu reaves (matrix) , adapted from a william gibson novel (the pope of cyberpunk : neuromancer). there's a long sequence where Keanu reeves travel through a computer generated universe with stunning cgi. A view of the future internet ?

- last starfighter
it's quiet different , the story of a kid that make a high score in a shoot'em up videogame and is hired by some guys to be a real starfighter (the game was a training)

- animatrix
some shorts are in the matrix that looks a bit like the tron 2.0 universe (i think the short is matriculated)

- existenz
the video arena is so advanced that it looks like our world

other interesting movies i can thing of (oriented virtual reality , computer world and also cyberpunk)

freejack , Virtuosity , Ghost in the shell , Strange Days , Avalon , daryl , the videos "gate to the mind's eye" and "odyssey" series , some siggraph shortcuts , a star trek episode (don't remember wich one) , thx 1138 , timecop , total recall , virus , matrix , virtuosity , some twilight zone episodes , the game , spy kids 3d , war games , westworld , futureworld , rollerball , altered states , runaway , repo man , Overdrawn at the Memory Bank , Cyber Bandits , Cyber Seeker , Virtual Assassin , The Cell

Corrector Yui- A girl gets stuck insider the digital waord and has to save it from Grossor (It sounds so much like Tron if it were a shojo) (www.tokyopop.com)

Code Lyoko - A group of kids save the digital world (The voice acting can be really annoying at times. Incidentally, it looks dubbed. Hm.... )

Xixx: level One - This is a local show with quite a few Tron/video gaming elements.

World of Hartz - An expert gamer in the digital world. (www.tokyopop.com)

Reality Check - A kid and his cat are on the internet in the digital world. (www.tokyopop.com)

Rockman.EXE - most of you heard of this one. I don't think I have to explain this one.

Wow, you both left out the most blatant ripoff of Tron ever... the CGI cartoon, Reboot.

Aside from that, a cheap 40-minute flick that found its way onto HBO for a while, Arcade. It's about a computer game that is alive because it was infused with human brain to increase it's AI. It lost control and began stealing souls, trapping them in cyberspace. The game AI's voice sounds very much like the MCP.

Ghost in the Machine.

Dexter's Laboratory had a Tron parody episode.

Muppet Babies - an episode where the gang enters Skeeter's computer to locate a virus. In the sky of the computer world there are these things riding on beams of light that look curiously like solar sailors.

Reboot was different, nothing glowed and ... I don't remember there anything uniquely Tron-ish about it.

Just the program concept. Though, what irritated me was that they couldn't even defend themselves from the game field randomly appearing.

Well the look was different - most of the time anyway. I was thinking more about the storyline though. Not just 'we're living in a computer', but the mysterious User, notorious Gigabyte who always reminded me of a slightly more colorful (personality) version of the MCP..

And I'd guess that partly the reason the imagery doesn't look so Tron-like is that the technology has come a long way and they could make things look more 'realistic'. The geometry of some of the characters looked Tron-inspired to me too though.

It just bugged me that (ok, DID I think it was a good show), that Reboot did remakably well while Tron was just sitting on Disney's shelf collecting dust while they're saying there's no market for it...order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

hey , thank you for your answers ; i'm currently having a look at the one given by kamui.
That's right i forgot about reboot , i didn't knew it but it's corrected now , thanks to you.

I want to add some other videos , more oriented virtual reality than tron-like (reboot is really in the spirit of tron even if the look is nothing like tron. If you want a look-a-like tron , i suggest you see the clip "mother reconnection" )

So here are some other interesting videos :

- resurrection of the little matchgirl :
it's a korean movie talking about a group of people entering in a video game that looks like our world (like eXistenZ , you can't see the difference .. exept for the special effect and moves)

- serial experiment Lain :
a 13 episode japanese anime taking place in a cyberpunk world , with alice in wonderland references and virtual universes , relation between man / machines (like metropolis the anime , or I , robot , or the matrix , just better)

- ghost in the shell 2 : innocence :
the sequel is about what's real , what's not , and the condition of the robots in our world. Quiet different than Tron but still one of the best if you like that subject. I really suggest for that one that you see the dubbed version and not the subbed version because they never stop talking and you spend your time reading the subbed (with the fansub version i saw , you have up to 10 lines of subtitles on the same pictures ... lol . you must stop the movie several times to read everything) .

Gah, I just remembered another one. Explorers.

Not a movie about virtual reality at all, but in dreams this boy is given circuit board schematics for a sort of advanced 'propulsion' device and in the dream, he's flying over the schematic which looks very much like an advanced city. There's 2 sequences of this and both look VERY much like Tron, with glowing wireframes, and streaks of light shooting around. If you didn't know the movie, you'd probably think it was actually from Tron. In fact one could substitute Flynn's digitization flight sequence with this and someone who hadn't seen Tron before would be none-the-wiser. If I get a chance I might do a video capture of it so everyone can get a look at it since this is probably a pretty tough movie to get ahold of these days. Wasn't very popular, even when it first came out.

oh yes i do remember that movie that i watched when i was a kid. if i remember , it was produced by spielberd and directed by joe dante (the year after he made gremlins).
But i don't remember the sequences you are talking about , just that they went into a big sphere and meet some aliens . I will watch it again now I'm currently using virtual dub to cut the part of the best sequences from movies about virtual reality and tron-spirit like

.hack//sign --takes place in the virtual reality of "The World", an online fantasy RPG. Tsukasa, a young boy Wavemaster (wizard), could not log-out ("he" --really a girl--was not in front of a terminal, so it could not be reset.). Despite the D&D environment, the characters talked about computers and used computer terminology.

Biker Mice from Mars episode:
"Virtual Unreality"

Charley's cyberpunk friend, Asphalt Jack MacCyber, blows into town with his new invention: a Virtual Reality motorcycle helmet which creates super-realistic illusions. Limburger steals the helmet and alters the technology to create a Virtual Reality Ray, enveloping Chicago in illusions to cover up his mining activities. With Jack's help, the Biker Mice enter Cyberspace, battling viruses, cursors and finally an electronic version of Limburger, before they can destroy the ray. Meanwhile, Greasepit has been trying to improve himself with a vocabulary-building book, Talk Big. (From the Unoffical Biker Mice from Mars site: http://www.bikermice.com/menu.html

On this subject, I got an email:

There's been a movie based off Tron that's been bugging me because I can't remember the name. A computer programmer gets sucked into his machine and has to fight a couple of beasts or the devil inside in an underground cave, think he saves a girl in the process but I could be wrong on that part. It was a big time B-movie, terrible, but funny enough to make me want to see it again or learn more. Any idea what it may be?

I don't know what he's referring to...any of you know?order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Um...no. No clue here. (Or Clu either.)

Awesome thread idea, by the way! I love the whole "digital world" concept myself. I mean, in general.

Has anybody mentioned "Colossus" yet? It's from either the very end of the '60s or the early '70s--not sure--and is about a giant computer taking over the world. It actually does a pretty good job at it and the movie ends with the humans still under control! Nicely _dark_.

Another great computerised setting that most people don't know, is the (paper and dice) RPG "Paranoia". It is the 23rd century. In the past, people built these huge underground cities called "complexes" and built huge computers into all the walls and whatnot to help run the place. Then one day, for whatever reason, the computers took over and the one in the particular complex you start off in--Alpha Complex--is NUTS.
For one thing, due to getting its brains scrambled during an accidental nuclear attack from a complex in Russia, it dug into the only defense information it could find--from ancient databases about the 1980s!--and thinks we're back in the Cold War. So you've got this society of weird mutant clones living underground, trapped, never seeing the sunlight, in a place that is completely _suffused_ with a giant, CRAZY, computer. Who is convinced that it's 1984 (in the George Orwell sense, as well...) and that the Commie Mutant Traitors are out to get it.

Artwork for the series--especially on the covers--very often features a circuit-board style background, and The Computer is everywhere. If the MCP was completely schizoid and its left processor didn't know what its right processor was doing, that'd essentially be "The Computer". (Also, see--for a much _darker_ version of this idea!--the Harlan Ellison story "For I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream.")
Paranoia, however, is a comedy. A snarky, mean, dark comedy as only the British can write (it's published from London) but _funny_ as hell. Just don't mind the fact that your clones will tend to bite the dust at a moment's notice--The Computer understands the importance of back-up files, so everybody comes in a six-pack!

There's a _lot_ of hologram stuff on Star Trek, but if you're talking about only the intelligent ones, the ones that seemed to be "living programs", I can think of at least four: Moriarty from that episode of Next Gen, The Doctor from Voyager, that other hologram that he met when they sent him as a _data packet_ to another ship, and Vic Fontaine from Deep Space Nine.
There was also a (silly) episode about a rift into a whole _universe_ of "photonic beings" who considered only the Doctor to be "real" and all the humans to be fake, imaginary "projections", and I seem to remember that episode where Barclay becomes super-intelligent and hooks himself into the Enterprise-D's computer had a scene that looked rather TRON-like.

There's the Voyager two-parter where everybody is trapped inside a holodeck program and their memories are scrambled so they think they _are_ the characters they're playing...there's the Deep Space Nine one where several people get scrambled during transport and their bodies end up as holo-matrixes while their minds are "everywhere else" on the station, filling up all the available computer memory, and nothing to do with holograms, but Dan Shor--RAM!--played a Ferengi character twice. (I also find it amusing that evidently "Rom" is a Ferengi name...) And if we're counting actor-connections with Tron I guess I should mention how David Warner was in two of the movies. But anyway.

There was plenty of being stuck inside a virtual world in the holodeck and either not knowing it or not being _able_ to get out, actually...

Also, if we're talking virtual universe in general, how about..._songs_ that remind us of "Tron"? My personal favourite for this has gotta be the obscure New Wave song "Living on Video" by the now-defunct Canadian band Trans-X. It's too bad they only made the

I just thought of a couple more last night.

The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest: Questworld. The Quest Team used their virtual reality program to enter their own virtual world. Dr. Quest used it as a virtual labratory, while Jonny, Jessie, and Hadji --well, Jonny and Jessie, anyway-- used it to play games. The Questworld outfits first looked like armor, with accents of a different color. Later, the outfits became black bodysuits, with the accent color. Jonny's was blue, Jessie had pink, etc.

The villian that sometimes entered Questworld was Dr. Jerimiah Surd. In real life, Surd was paralyzed, confined to a wheelchair. In Questworld, he ran around, doing whatever he wanted.

In both the early CGI Questworld animation, and when they later switched to regular 2-D animation, Surd bears a strange resemblence to Sark.

Scooby-Doo and the Cyber Chase: Fourth animated movie that had Scooby-Doo, Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy chasing around a virus in a game designed after their adventures. They even met up with the game versions of themselves. To tell the difference, the Cyber-gang --as Velma calls them-- are dressed in the classic Mystery, Inc. clothes from the 1970's. The only thing is, Cyber-Shaggy was wearing a red shirt, while Real-Shaggy wore the green one. But it was the green shirt Shaggy wore in the orginal cartoon. He got the red shirt in The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-D00. Anyway, every time they changed levels in the game, the scenes would change by derezzing the old one, and rezzing up the new level, both in wireframe.

I'll add more if I come up with any.

Edit: Chaotic: A kid enters a virtual world to battle with monsters in a Collectiable Trading Card Game. Pretty much Tron meets Yu-Gi-Oh! (Fox4Kids)

And while we're on the subject:

Yu-Gi-Oh!: Frequently uses computers and holographic technology to bring the monsters on the cards to life, making the card battles as near to life as can be. There were even a story arc in Season 3 (Still during Seto Kaiba's Battle City Tournament) where the characters ended up inside a computer's virtual world and dueled while they were inside. (Triston got turned into a cyber-monkey while they were there.)

And there was once (just after the Duelist Kingdom Tournament, but before Battle City Tournament) Seto, Mokuba, Yugi, Joey, and Mai entered a virtual game.

Hi, I'm new here!

There's a brand-new webcomic starting up called Erfworld which did a -themed strip recently; it really deserves to be read from the beginning, though. (The strip in question is #17, for the impatient.)
