TRON 2.0 Killer App Update

on Tuesday, August, 17, 2004 10:03 PM

Seems BVG had some kind of press event recently, and showed off the latest build of the game to the media.

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/action/tron20killerapp/index.html
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/538/538732p1.html

There are also video clips and discussion going on at Boxhat.

Rather than repeat my comments, you can read what I think on Boxhat.

The only thing I'll say is . . . PC EXPANSION!

on the official website

http://www.tronkillerapp.com/
there isn't any info about all those new weapons [i think from looking at the screenshots of that new mesh thingy, it might be lioke the fuel rod gun in the pc version of halo,a sort of grenade launcher.]
but on the "gameplay modes" page, there are pics of green sark and tron models.

i think we need an expansion pack petition. anyone agree?

How does this sound?

To Buena Vista Games:

We the undersigned, request that you create an expansion pack for the PC version of Tron 2.0 that contains the extras featured in the Xbox version of the game.

It would be relatively easy to port these features from the Xbox to the PC, since the platforms are so similar. Development cost to accomplish this, should not be a concern. With so much already invested in the Xbox version, doing a port of these features to the PC is comparatively inexpensive. In contrast, the profit potential is great. A PC expansion pack sold at a reasonable price would further help to recoup investments already made, in both titles.

The demand for such an expansion pack should be high with owners of the PC version, due to the greatly improved multiplayer game modes . . . which the PC version sorely lacks. These new multiplayer modes will breathe new life into the PC game.

Sincerely,

PC Tron 2.0 Players everywhere

Some personal anecdotes I'd like to add:

1. If they did release a PC expansion, I'd like to see the Editing Tools updated significantly. Better documentation, more prefabs, more sample maps, and more model sources. (Yeah I know, when pigs can fly.)

2. Fix the remaining bugs in the game. In particular, the 8 player Light Cycle bug is horrible. Make Internet play for Light Cycles official.

3. Do us a favor, and leave out the new music and Halo-esque helmets on the models in the Xbox version. They both suck.

All's I gotta say is that I need to get DSL or faster. 56K SUCKS! It's taking forever for those sites to load. I simply can't wait to actually try to download one of those movie clips. Good grief, Charlie Brown.

EDIT: Okay, I'm giving up on trying to view the new stuff. I saw one screenshot and a very low-resolution video clip. Not a lot to go from, but it looked alright. I'd have to see more to give any legit assessment.

i was curious about this quote from GameSpot (or was it GameStop? Oh well). Didn't the PC version have MP lightcycles by default? Or was that added in the expansion? Regardless, we can now do MP lightcycles on the PC, so the quote isn't accurate, imo:
The big news with the multiplayer, of course, is that Killer App will pack multiplayer light cycle gameplay, which the PC version was unable to accomplish.

MP Light Cycles has been part of the game since the beginning. But because it was a last minute addition, it's "unofficial" for internet play. They didn't want to hear people complaining if Light Cycles didn't perform well over the internet. As it turned out, Light Cycles actually perform pretty well, online.

So yeah, the quote isn't entirely accurate.

You should add that developing a PC expansion pack would give a new reason to re-release the main game at retail. Getting retail stores to restock a PC game is a problem for all but the most popular games. EA is masterful at selling old titles by discounting and bundling them to keep them on store shelves. The original Tron 2.0 game could be bundled with the expansion pack at an attractive price to draw new users who skipped the game the first time due to its price. Few games can be a Doom 3 and sell well at $50. BVG needs to realize this and make the game attractive and affordable enough so that people will be able to get it after buying Doom 3 or another really popular title.

1. If they did release a PC expansion, I'd like to see the Editing Tools updated significantly. Better documentation, more prefabs, more sample maps, and more model sources.
Much of that is unrealistic and unnecessary. More sample maps could and should be done with little effort since they have already been made (prefabs could be gotten from the sample maps to save on amount of effort to do this). Documentation simply won't happen due to the amount of work required. I also think that the included documentation plus what the user community has discovered really covers all there is to know. The user community should provide a pooled source of extra documentation for the tools. As for more model sources, having gained considerable knowledge in this area, the only two things I would like to see are the LTA files for the attachment models (or at least for the hand-held weapons) and the Maya model sources or the LTA files for at least a few of the single-player models which do not have multiplayer counterparts and which have a different skeletal structure than the standard multiplayer one. Models which come to mind are the non-realworld Datawraith, the Kernel, Thorne, and realworld Jet. The LTA's for the others aren't absolutely required to be reutilitized. The lack of attachments bug must also be corrected to make working with the models in multiplayer worthwhile although I assume that Climax has already done this for the XBOX version.

2. Fix the remaining bugs in the game. In particular, the 8 player Light Cycle bug is horrible. Make Internet play for Light Cycles official.
I would suspect that Climax has already done this if the XBOX game supports 16 players as stated.

and I have to agree about the music and the helmets. (does anyone else find it ironic the words to that song said "let's give this another try"?)

Okay, revised petition . . .

A PC expansion pack sold at a reasonable price (say, approximately $20) would further help to recoup investments already made, in both titles.

The demand for such an expansion pack should be high with owners of the PC version, due to the greatly improved multiplayer game modes . . . which the PC version sorely lacks. These new multiplayer modes will breathe new life into the PC game.

Additionally, the expansion would help spur sales of the original game (for those who do not have it yet), further increasing revenue. Perhaps a bundle of the old and new titles could be offered at a reasonable price (less than $50).

We also request that certain specific features of the Xbox version that do not fit with the Tron universe - the new music and the Doom or Halo style helmets on the multiplayer characters - please not be included in the expansion. Most would agree that these do not belong in the Tron universe, at all. They are not true to the spirit and vision of the original film.

Sincerely,

PC Tron 2.0 Players everywhere

Sound okay? Unless a petition like this gets a lot of support (thousands of signatures), I don't think BVG would take it seriously. In fact, even with thousands, I still wonder. But that didn't stop a movie sequel petition from being started, did it?

Exactly.

(prefabs could be gotten from the sample maps to save on amount of effort to do this).
Point taken.

Documentation simply won't happen due to the amount of work required.
Yes, I know. (Hence my "when pigs fly" comment.) But one can still hope. The original docs are severely lacking. A little more effort put into them would be welcomed.

Having the source LTA files for these models won't really do much good, and LTA's for the others aren't absolutely required to be reutilitized.
Can you be more clear with this statement? I'm not sure what you're getting at. Are you saying SP LTAs won't really do much good when trying to move SP models to MP?

Yes, that is what I was saying. However, I have since found it to no longer be true (see my post below). Some of the single-player models can be properly converted to multiplayer (not effortlessly but doable with a lot of effort as I have done it) without using the LTA files. The rest can't be converted completely or properly in the same way because their skeletons and/or sizes are too different. Having the LTA's for them would make converting them significantly easier. I would also like to have the LTA file versions of the handheld weapons, helmets, and visors. That would really speed up the process.

What I really want are the character models for the XBOX version. Climax has added some additional characters like Sark, and it has already done the conversion work on existing ones like Thorn and the Kernel which are missing from multiplayer. I am confident I can put them into the PC version even if they are in LTB format, but obviously I would prefer LTA or the source model format. What is of more concern to me is the bug regarding attachments and the lack of source code to improve the PC's multiplayer gameplay. Those two things really take away my interest in adding characters to multiplayer.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

That's why BVG should release an expansion . . . so we're not forced to do these things ourselves. That way, everyone wins. BVG gets their money, and we get our new gameplay content.

Otherwise, the community will find a way to rip the Xbox content anyway, and BVG loses out yet again.

I support an expansion, and I would buy it (although begrudgingly given what I paid for the original game).

I see the XBOX version of the game as the perfect opportunity for BVG to do one of two things (or both). Either commission Climax to port their XBOX work back into the PC version for an official expansion pack, or have Climax clean up the PC game source code to meet the legal requirements (BVG, do not worry about the missing functionality) and release it publicly for user development.

Saw the videos finally. They're okay. It looks fun, but I guess I'm more into the Single-Player game instead of the MP one... so I won't be that sad to not see it on the PC. However, if I ever get DSL or cable modem, I'd probably be a bit sadder.

One thing that's bothered me about the multi-player experience is that the character animations seem rigid. Characters seem to kinda slide across the floor or something. Or maybe everything just moves too fast and seems more unrealistic as a result. I was surprised to still see this in T:KA (KillerApp). I hope more time is spent on making things more realistic.

I've also never been thoroughly impressed by the disc throw animation. Looks like a direct port from the PC was used in T:KA. Bummer.

Unfortunately, the screenshots for Tron 2.0 SP/MP are always very colorful and cartoony. I'm afraid that older gameplayers may be, albeit mistakingly, turned off by the seemingly "kids" oriented game. I wish there was a way to give screens of the game that didn't make it look so cartoony.

Oh well, I'm really glad the T:KA game is being made! Hopefully it'll bring many more people onto the Tron bandwagon. From the screens, though, people who are into Halo and more 'realistic' games may be turned off. Hopefully not though, as they'd be missing out, I'm sure.

I agree that the default multiplayer movement especially in derez mode is too fast and the jump height too high. It is one reason why so many of the weapons are ineffective and useless in that mode. I didn't realize just how much too fast the movement is until after playing several other games recently.

The Tron world, including in the movie, has always had an animated look to it. Admittedly, the colors used for the multiplayer characters in the game especially purple and orange accentuate this look.

From the screens, though, people who are into Halo and more 'realistic' games may be turned off.
With the exception of blood, Halo is about as cartoony as you can get. You have seen the aliens and weapons in it, right? Both are very cartoonish. The pistol looks like a toy and a toy hairdryer at that, and some of the aliens even behave like cartoon characters.

This is no longer true. ModelEdit is not able to do it, but I can. See my second post in this thread for the results.

If I had the LTA files to the single-player models with incompatible skeletons, I could convert them easier than doing it without them. It's still a very painstaking task either way, but having the LTA's significantly reduces the work.

So, BVG are you listening? Please release the LTA files for at least a few of the single-player characters and the handheld weapons, helmets, and visors.

Okay, so how about getting a petition off the ground, for real? It sounds like most of you don't object to the wording I used in my proposed petition statement, so I'll go with that.

As much as I'd like to put it somewhere like petitiononline.com, I actually think it would be better if it was a message that became a sticky post here on Tron-Sector. Like what was done with the sequel petition. That way we can keep out stupid posts done on purpose, to foul up the petition. We'll also have an identity to go along with the poster . . . signatures at petitiononline.com are as about as good as anonymous ones.

So if I go ahead and create a post with the petition, will one of the administrators here at Tron-Sector sticky it? Auric? Sketch? DaveTRON?
