I've *got* to visit this place!

on Wednesday, April, 14, 2004 3:41 PM
The Computer Museum at Bletchley Park, England
I just emailed them to donate one of my old computers as they don't have one. It's the MGT Sam Coupé, a fairly obscure British Z80-based computer from the early 1990s. I still have the original box and manuals for it as well

*drools*

I want to visit any computer museum! :| I don't know where the nearest museum there is... *flop*

I'd probably go to a museum with the largest Commodore collection. :P

Well, a quick Google search found this one, this one, this one and this one. I'm sure there are probably more but they were the first ones that came up.

Isn't it interesting how in the 80's and 90's we (people in general) couldn't wait for computers to get better graphics, more (closer to the arcade) games, and faster processing power to offer?

And now we miss and love the memories of those simpler, classic computers of yesteryear!

Some of us relive memories via an emulator for an Atari 2600, or 400 computer, or Commodore emulator - I've even got an Apple 2 emulator that I play with from time to time.

Actually, I've got ALL of my original computers - my Commodore 64, Apple //c, Atari 2600 (well, my Dad still has that one, anyway), Macintosh SE w/ 20MB HD.

Sure, they didn't do as much as most modern cell phones are capable of doing today, but they sure were fun and GREAT memories, eh?

Ahhhh, the memories!

** runs down to basement, unpacks Commodore 64, plugs in Simon's Basic cartridge, and starts writing a simple program, grinning ear to ear... **

I got a reply

Are you able to drop the machine off to us? If so then yes, we'd very
much appreciate it! (if not then where are you? Maybe one of the
volunteers lives close enough to make a pick-up).

We haven't got a Sam at present and I haven't personally seen one for a
few years - they never were particularly common (I expect the likes of
the Amiga and ST killed them off). I seem to recall the whole package
being very good though, with very nice manuals etc.

thanks in advance,

Man yeah I remember looking at that old computer museum. I still have a few old ones hanging around hiding in spaces that my parents don't even know about. I think I have 2 apple Macs here, TSR-80 Model 1, 2 nextstation,. I remember I got hold of a IBM PCjr. But thrown that out. cause it was beyond hope even coming from a guy like me. No longer repairable at all. Yeah I miss using some of the older machines. I would have liked to be able to still use some of them for even learning back then what I know now of computer programming from the 90's on up till today.

Would have been interesting to have used those compilers way back then for those machines... QWouldn't it be really freaky if some of these older machines came back to haunt us on todays marketplace. As bigger better and bolder new computer. And still play the original games way back when in the 80's and 90's.

Comes out in front of Mimizuku ewith the 2 nextstation and says. nexta, nexta, nexta nextstation. You know what I enjoy using them as well. It makes life very fun with them. THe one thing that I think that is great from the nextsation Mimizuku. If one should ever crash lets say as an example. ANd I need to reboot it on my small netowrk. AllI have to do is make sure the other nextstationis running. And jut give it a small command and boot from the other machine and from there you can reinstall from the other machine to the one that the hard drive had crashed on. And the other person working on theother machine would never know th difference.

Thats one thing that should have been done on todays computers as a bonus. But alas the idea never caught onto enviroments like windows or Mac OS. If the Mac people could correct me on this please do. Cause I am not certain if it does exists on your machines.I know of this only on the nextstation.

Here is the link to it from my web page if your interested in the stats and how I got a hold of the two. I am planning to install a larger drive into each of them a 1.0 and a 1.2 gigger scsi-2 drives into each of them. Since the maximum I can go is 2 gigs in each for formating reasons. I have not had a chance to place into them largers drives. Since I don't know if their Bios can handle the larger drives. I am going to check with another fellow who has a nextstation and has it running and working with it and using it to access the internet as well.

I believe they rolled it into Mac OS X Server (I'm sure I've heard about it before, at least). You do know that Mac OS X is an amalgamation of classic MacOS and NeXTStep, right? In fact until recently there were still NextStep GUI widgets hidden in some of OS X's resources

[EDIT: Here's some information about NetBoot/NetInstall on OS X Server]
http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/netboot.html
Mac OS X Server includes system imaging tools that streamline the support of Macintosh clients and reduce system administration costs. You can use NetBoot to host a standard operating system and application configuration on all of the desktop systems. And Network Install is an ideal solution for installing software on Mac OS X desktop and portable systems.

NetBoot
The NetBoot service in Mac OS X Server enables multiple Mac systems to boot from a single server-based disk image, instead of from their internal hard drive. This allows you to create a standard configuration and use it on all of the desktop systems in a department or classroom — or host multiple images customized for different workgroups. You can even create server configurations and run all of your servers from one image. Updating the disk image on the NetBoot server updates all of these systems automatically the next time they restart.

Network InstallDesigned for administrators who manage operating system installations and software updates for their organizations, this powerful tool performs automated software installations — whether it’s a new version of the operating system, a specific suite of applications for a workgroup, or both — saving time and eliminating the expense of distributing software on CD.

Using the innovative technology that Apple pioneered with NetBoot, Network Install enables client systems on your network to automatically discover a server-based disk image and install its contents on their hard drive. Network Install can run completely unattended, providing a streamlined installation and upgrade experience for your users. You may also choose to specify certain client actions before or after the installation of a software package or system image. Once the installation process is complete, client systems no longer need to be connected to the network, making Network Install an excellent solution for managing mobile computers.

Network Image UtilityWith the new Network Image Utility, you can create a NetBoot or Network Install disk image simply by cloning a local volume — no configuration required. This gives you the opportunity to build a system, complete with user preferences, and to test and refine it locally before deploying it across the entire network.

BTW, in case you weren't aware, OmniGroup still have versions of their OmniWeb browser for NeXTStep (up to version 2.5) available for download here. Development of the browser on OS X is still going strong, with public betas of version 5 currently available. It's looking like a very nice browser as OmniGroup have a lot of experience with programming for NeXTStep that they've brought to OS X.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

OKay that's kewel. I wasn't too sure if it was implimented into the OS X design. When Apple had bought the Next company I wasn't too sure if they had taken already some of the idea's that were implemented into the Nextstep OS. Yes you are right. Its good to know about this. Even though I'm not a mac user persey you know. But its still good to know that they do use some of the ideas that Next had when they were around.

And I do use these two computers do get a change of enviroment from time to time. Yeah what Apple did when they were developing the OSX OS for their line of computers. Which I think was smart on their part. Was to use an already good OS like Unix or freebsd. And place a nice enviroment on top that was very functional for the users. And I'm not going to knock them for doing it. I've been reading around for the last couple of years from linux magazines and all that. It was something that I think that Microsoft should have used for their OS instead of what they are doing now for their current line of operating systems.

Thats good to know as well. I'll take a look into that for a browser for my tw newxtstations that I have here. I am going to be making soome for the both of them. There are a few web sites still out there that I can download and make burn ins of some free applications that are available for the two of them. Just need to find the two web sites and start downloading the applications and burn them to cd. ANd start installing them once I get the other hard drives installed and running. Just haven't gotten around to doing that. Peanuts.org I believe is one of them that I can still get the applications for them.

Man these are the good old days in finding things for them. Too bad there are not more of these websites for the good old computers that are still running. The classical computers are the one thing that should still be around for everyone to see and look at in admiration. And say wow thes machines are still cool to use.

Retro for everyone. I don't know too much about the old school Computer stuff, but it was way cool, plus they had a toy museum which had the original original LEGO, its so nostalgic!!! wow, coolios.
