Yeah - I was lucky enough to have a ROM. I REALLY wanted one when I was a kid. My grandparents bought a ROM for me, my bro, and cousins in the late 70's - LOADS of fun! I'll break mine out of it's storage box soon perhaps, and see if he comes to life with a fresh 9V. BTW - EXCELLENT job on derezzing Holly Hobbie, 70's style-e!

curtishart Wrote:
Yea, I just can't see kids today in about 20 year be fond of their toys...

You know - I agree with you on that. DaveTRON also has a valid point about the slightly older classics, but I clearly remember my father often saying things like "Gee, we didn't have anything like that when I was a kid!" - and he said it in a way that really kind of meant "I wish I were your age again so I could play with this cool stuff!". The 70's and 80's was a GREAT time for toys!

Trace Wrote:Hm. Well at the speed that Armatron moves, I believe it would've become the Butlertron to Holly Hobbie and Carrie at my Gazebo tea parties.

Ha haaaaaaaaaaaa!

Touché! That was too funny!

Buttlertron!

Nice.

Ha ha... huh...

** clears throat, looks all worried **

Yeaaaah... um... but you were just joking though, right?

I mean, you know Armatron is NOT a butler for Holly Hobbie.

Do you have ANY idea what an Armatron loaded with fresh, alkaline, D-cell batteries is capable of?

Hmmmmm?

I'll have you know that ARMATRON is the most POWERFUL toy robotic arm from that era!

The plastic polymers in a Holly Hobbie Gazebo could NEVER withstand the crushing grip of an Armatron unit..

OH NO!! NEVER!!!! NOT IN A MILLION YEARS!!!

** the room gets quiet, people start to stare **

ARMATRON IS THE MOST POWERFUL TOY... WITH A CRUSHING GRIP THAT NO MORTAL DOLL'S PLAY GAZEBO COULD EVER WITHSTAND!

NO! NEVERRRRR!!!

AND FURTHER MORE...

** looks around and notices everyone staring at him with concern **

Uh...

Yeah...

** embarrassed, composes self, blushing slightly **

Yeah.. heh... I mean, funny joke.. he he. What are you all starring at?

So...

Nikster - you had an Armatron too? Cool toy, eh? A babetron that digs robotic arms and even OWNED one - how cool is that!

Optimus Prime!

Ready for battle, I see!

Wow - it looks like he's in excellent condition too!

I never had any Transformers - thought they were cool though.

I woke up early this morning and just had to see if I could find ROM.

Well... I did indeed find ROM.

I also found my Merlin! They were in the same storage box! And I found my Tomy 3D "Planet Zeon" game too!

ROM was a bit dusty, so I had to give him a good cleaning. Merlin wasn't as bad, but I cleaned it off as best I could too, and did the same with Planet Zeon.

Took some pics... they looked boring... touched them up a bit, and...

Prime looks brand new because he is! I just picked him up yesterday. It's the limited edition 20th Anniversary Edition Optimus Prime. This is the first and only Optimus Prime made to look as much like the cartoon version of Optimus Prime as possible. The original figure didn't look anywhere near this good, is only half the size, doesn't come close to having the level of detail this one does and doesn't have 1/10 the articulation. And yes, it transforms into a truck!

I had a small collection of Transformers, but never had Optimus or Megatron or any of the other larger figures because they were too expensive. This edition is pretty pricy too, so when I saw this figure I wanted to check it out but I wasn't going to buy it. My wife is so great, she just looked at it and said "That's cool, why don't you get it?" So I did!

Hey, I'm glad your ROM still works. I'll say it again, that is one cool figure!

Yeah - you know, now that you mention it, I remember the toy Transformers not looking too much like their TV counterparts. They were disproportionate, and sort of clunky in design. AND fragile - I remember breaking my friend's white race car Transformer (forgot Transformer name) - all I did was twist his waste, and the cab broke right off! Again, that's a sweet looking Optimus Prime - the detailing on him is really good!

Yesterday, I also scrounged up enough batteries to get my Planet Zeon 3D game working again. I was really excited at first to play it again... but sadly the colors in the game display itself somehow started bleeding in one of the eye's perspectives. Very odd - it must have warped a bit in there over the years. It still works though, and I played a couple of rounds on it. Bummer about the display color bleeding/warping.

I plugged in Merlin too (AC adapter). He's working just great! I played some tic-tac-toe, Magic Square, Blackjack 13, Echo, and a little Music Machine. I was never a much a fan of Mindbender - a guessing game. I even got my wife to play it for a while. She LOVES tic-tac-toe! And I got her in to Blackjack 13 a little too. She actually asked me to keep the game in a place where she could find it when she wants to play - how cool is that! It's very rare for her to show interest in electronic or video games, so I was loving that.

Trace takes the Optimus Prime doll and sits it down in the Gazebo with her Holly Hobbie doll.
"Well, hello, Mr. Prime! So lovely to have you back for tea!"

"Thank you, Miss Hobbie. Your hospitality is impeccable."

"It must be nice to sit down to a quiet cup of tea after a day of destroying Decepticons and saving the world."

"Oh, yes. And may I say, these lady fingers are delightful."

"I made them myself."

"You didn't!"

"Oh, yes. Please do try the cucumber sandwiches! You know, they are Rachet's favorite."

Armatron enters with a tray carrying more tea. The lovely party continues unabated.

WHAT THE?!

Oh no! The evil Holly Hobbie has somehow put Optimus Prime and ARMATRON under her spell with some sort of girlie mind control! She has ARMATRON doing her bidding and Optimus acting all fancy-like! And those lady fingers are just plain insidious!

Oh, if only a certain Spaceknight were to show up, I'm sure Holly Hobbie could be vanquished!

A freind had the Armitron, and I would ask him to bring it along every time he came over. That was lots of fun. Didn't they make a mobile version (one with wheels) sometime later? I agree with Dave about the older, cool toys, but some of the new stuff, like the interactive R2-D2, blows away the toys from the 80's. I'm getting hooked on the Transformers Alienators, and considered getting the Optimus Prime 20th Anniversary (there was one left at the local Toys R Us).

Ha haaaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaa haaa!

Holy cow - THAT was funny!

...

BUT VERY WRONG!

You just can't go playing all nicey-nice with cool ACTION FIGURES like that!

This is an awful breach of toy etiquette

Optimus Prime drinks NOT tea, he drinketh high grade, synthetic motor oil-eth-eth-ishist-eth.

Sorry about that, not sure where-est my old English came from, it just came out that way.

Back to action figure etiquette and protocols.

Hmmm...

Ok, I can see it's time to bring in the cavalry!

[enter "Toy Story" mode]

** switches on ROM and takes a step back **

** ROM's eyes light up with, glowing an eerie, dead-cold red **
- abdominal lights sequencing back and forth
- robotic pulse... pulsating
- electronic breathing commencing

ROM scans the area, noting the gazebo tea party.

His eyes lock on the target.

Backpack rocket ignites...

ROM is thrust in to the air with the booming force of his rocket pack.

The tea glasses in the gazebo start to clatter from the approaching force of ROM's rockets.

The powerful force of ROM's rocket packs generates a strong wind that disrupts small objects as he approaches the gazebo for landing.

BAM!

The ground shakes and rumbles as the mighty ROM makes his landing just inches away from the gazebo play set.

He stands near the gazebo, towering over the others, with a menacing look in his glowing red eyes.

The whole gazebo quakes as ROM steps closer and stops in front of Holly Hobbie.

ROM looks down at the much smaller Holly doll, his powerful red glowing eyes beaming energy on her small face.

The small and meager Holly Hobbie sits in the shadow of the giant, robotic action figure.

It grows quiet.

Holly Hobbie looks up at the mighty, mechanical man, his eyes glowing red...

Oh yes... it is most certainly doom for Holly Hobbie and her little tea party...

ROM is SURE to crush them along with the gazebo...

Hi ROM. Would you like some tea?

Sure. I could use some nice hot tea. Could you top mine off with some fresh motor oil please?

Why sure Here you go.

Thank you.

Uh.... ??

I just love your eyes. Are they naturally red like that?

Why yes they are. ** blushes ** Thanks!

What's going on? ...

Why don't you have a seat near Mr. Prime over here?

Why thank you. My rocket packs need some recharging and I could use some relaxation.

Hi ROM. That was one heck of an entrance!

Hey Optimus. How have you been?

Oh I've been busy. You know, one minute I'm a truck speeding down the road, the next minute I'm a transforming robotic protector of good, from the evil clutches of the Deceptigons.

How's your tea guys, would you like some more?

I'm good, thank you.

I had the Armtron. My parents got it at RS for christmas. I played with it and my starwars/g.i. joe guys. It was a great toy and it was built to last (or at least mine did).

You never know what you have til you get rid of it. I sold mine at a yard sale we had (I was a dumb kid). A week later I found a dead snake that I was scared to pick up and I really would of had fun taking it out in the woods to play around with the dead snake without touching it (it was a just a harmless grass snake).

Why don't they make toys like that anymore? I mean, that durable. I must have droped it several thousand times because I was and still am a clumbzy fellow.

It really would have become handy if I found wee little nuke power core and needed to pick it up... lol

What a great toy.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

TheReelTodd Wrote:I bought some batteries today.

I put them in my slightly cleaner than yesterday Armatron...

and...

NOTHING!

NO POWER!

Oh no!

I opened it up and noticed that the "-" (negative) side battery contact was all corroded. I filed it down a bit...

and then...

YESSSSSSSSS!

It STILL works!

Haaaaaaaaaaa!

I started having a ball as all sorts of memories came back!

I don't have the little things it came with anymore - it came with some plastic reactor-looking parts in a clear casing - kind of like two electrode-like balls with the reactor parts underneath. These things could be disassembled and reassembled with the arm - it was LOADS of fun!

At work today I looked up Armatron on the net. It seems there are still plenty of these things out there and they're only going for about $10.00 on ebay. What a shame! I mean, I'm not even considering selling mine - LOVE IT TOO MUCH, but I figured these techno-morsels of the early 80's would be doing a bit better than that now!

I took some video of my vintage toy today just minutes ago:

The motion has been sped up 4 times, because these suckers are slow! They're fun, but very slow - that was one of the drawbacks of these plastic, gear-driven, mechanical arms. I was such a geek as a kid, I actually used to EAT with it! Yes, I had it hold a plastic fork or spoon and feed me my food!

Sketch Wrote:I still have mine. Need to off clean the dust its recently collected. It was and still is the coolest item I've seen our local Radio Shack carry.

I never knew they were that old. Your's has a different sticker. Mine says "SUPER ARMATRON" and has the arm drawn on the sticker holding a ball.

Yeah - I looked that up. I think it was basically the same thing, with different decaling, perhaps the 2nd generation (or 2nd wave of manufacturing to be exact). It seems these things were sold for several years, NOT just the early 80's. Dust it off and have some fun, my friend!

DaveTRON Wrote:Anyone remember the helicopter like these that flew around on a rod? I had one of those, great toy!

YES! I had one of those! In the late 70's, I got one for Christmas! It was AWESOME! It had a hook thing on the bottom, and there were little objects to pick up with it. I thought it was cooler than anything because it REALLY flew (though tethered by a plastic part supplying the prop-drive). I remember for some reason it flew REALLY fast backward, and would often get caught in the rug if I had it going too fast backward and it embedded it self on impact. Sadly, that was one toy that didn't last more than a few years. BUT I enjoyed it to the max while I had it!

Scuzzy Wrote:Oh my User! I remember that thing! I wanted one so badly and remember playing with my friend's when I was at his house, except we played with it and our Star Wars figures. NOthing like throwing Luke across the room (if 3" is "across the room").

Geez, we're old...

...now who remembers that little robot from the NES?

Yeah - we're old alright! Scary, huh?

The NES robot... you mean "ROB"?

curtishart Wrote:I remember seeing this and thinking it wouldn't be far off they'll have fully articulated robots for the average consumer.

Even thought I could build a robot with a few of those

Actually... they do. Well, you kind of have to be slightly loaded to afford one, but Sony has a few consumer model, fully automated and articulated robots. There is some video of them on www.TokyoDV.com in the "News" video listing. They can even recognize faces - COOL stuff!

What a great toy.

I was waiting for you to chime in on this one. Awesome toy.. er, masterpiece of robotic ingenuity that thing is, eh?

Yeah - that little toy power core thing with the light blue spheres on top (the take-apart thing that came with the arm) was just practice for the REAL THING! Now, we'll BOTH be ready if we ever come across a REAL 4" x 2" nuclear power core and need to quickly pull it apart before major meltdown!

That's not the footage I'm using, but my mighty Aramatron unit will indeed be featured in an upcoming video project I'm currently working on. It's not TRON related, and it will only be in there for about 3 seconds or so, but I guarantee it will be an electrifyingly fun visual!
