Xbox TRON 2.0 First Look in XOM

on Monday, March, 15, 2004 5:09 PM
The 4/2004 Xbox Offical Magazine issue has a "first look" at the new TRON 2.0 game. Has some new info, and speculation. Shows pic of Sark as multiplayer character will scan & post article if okay. Also mentions that a new Discs of TRON game is coming out for Sprint cell phones.

Oh man . . . I hope some of this stuff filters back to the PC side, eventually. I will be really peeved if the Xbox version gets a lot of exclusive stuff that we will never have access to.

Noted also the Kernel as multiplayer character, and what appears to be a couple of new "guard"-types, including the classic hockey-pad guards from the movie! Whoopie!

Cool! Thanks for the scans, yojimbo!

Geez . . . this is exactly what I was expecting. Xbox owners get a significantly different game, with improved multiplayer. Again, I don't know whether to be happy or not.

I actually have an Xbox . . . but I'd still rather play on the PC, and want all of these "upgrades" on the Xbox version to migrate their way back to the PC version. I just can't see myself playing the game using the Xbox controller.

Looks like the weapons have been given proper hand-held/3rd person versions (actually it looks like the PV weapons were simply rescaled for HH which is something which should have been done in the PC version). The ones in the PC version are pretty crude and don't really resemble the player view/1st person weapons except for the disc.

The multiplayer mode described in the article sounds interesting although CTF and Tron (even with lightcycles) don't really go together. An objective based game type with lightcycles is a good idea, but CTF should not be it. it should be something appropriate to the Tron theme.

Regarding the use of the Kernel, etc. in multiplayer, the biggest question I have about that is how will the collision detection be handled. The Kernel is a significantly larger model than the rest of the multiplayer characters and his skeleton is also different. That makes him a much bigger and easier target to hit. How will that be accomodated to put the larger models on equal footing with the smaller ones? I would really like to hear what Climax has to say on the subject.

So, Xbox users get the additional character models we PC users have been asking for (e.g. Sark and MCP Guard) and more, correct 3rd person/handheld weapons models and a possible new game type mixing Light Cycles with characters? And no word that any of this stuff will ever show up on the PC, even as part of a retail expansion pack? How not cool is that?

Oh, and to the turd that wrote the preview:

It's still early in development. Don't bite off BVI's head just yet.

I personally didn't mind the jumping puzzles in the game. As a matter of fact, I found it a refreshing change of pace to the type of games I typically play. However, many people including reviewers hated the jumping puzzles, so it doesn't surprise me that they would be de-emphasized in the XBOX version.

EVERYONE.... Take a step back..... Please..

I'm a PC user because real gamers play PC games (research it on the net if you need to..... ok... it's debateable... but still.) and I know that BVI must have kept this in mind considering the fact that the PC user TRON fan base is what made TRON take another huge step into the real world (this time in the 21st Cent.).

I'm sure our friends at BVI haven't left us out in all the experence. TRON (like many other great games) may have a 'Gold', 'SE', 'Plat.', or even 'GOTY' eddition in the works for the PC that very well may surpass our image of what we know about TRON 2.0.

The problem here is that there is a HELL of a lot of input that our friends at BVI can't tell us as of yet. Lets keep this in mind before we go crazy...

...... because I'm saving mine up if I don't get some answers for the TRON PC commuity... lol

I haven't left anybody with a bloody stump where their head used to be just yet.

Look, I understand the idea of creating new content for the console gamers so they are motivated to go out and buy the game.

However, to not make this content available on the PC and alienate the PC customer base is a mistake. The solution is an expansion pack. I'm always up for expansion packs for my favorite games. I'll be glad to pay for an expansion pack to TRON 2.0. Throw this new stuff in with an expansion pack and I'm happy.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Consoles are EVIL, there are several reasons for this:

1) there are many games released on consoles only that I will probably never get a chance to play (Star wars racer:Revenge, Metroid prime.etc)

2) games that are released for the PC and the console have to be deliberately made simple for use with gamepads--not good

3) I have also studied game reviews and found that PC games released on consoles as well are not ad good as games on PC or console only.

Consoles are also cheap compared to PCs (looking at my $400 video card, purchased to ensure a "glowing" TRON 2.0 experience, which will now be available sans hardware upgrades on the XBox.)

1) there are many games released on consoles only that I will probably never get a chance to play (Star wars racer:Revenge, Metroid prime.etc)

Buying used hardware and software, you could pick up a Gamecube and both of these titles for less than $150 (depending on where you live in re: taxes). If that seems like a lot of money to you, look for a part-time job. You'll have it in a weekend, if you choose well.

2) games that are released for the PC and the console have to be deliberately made simple for use with gamepads--not good

I have yet to experience this, although I can certainly see where a FPS might be made with fewer enemies/effects, etc. to accomdate a console's computing power (vs. a PC), but I don't think the gamepad has all that much to do with it. In any case, as I learned with Halo, it's a matter of practice, anyway.

3) I have also studied game reviews and found that PC games released on consoles as well are not ad good as games on PC or console only.

I take it you're referring to titles which are released on PC and console simultaneously, which is not the case with TRON 2.0. I would expect the gaming press to review the XBox version of TRON 2.0 by comparing it to the PC version (as unfair as that might appear to be), but I don't expect that to mean automatically negative reviews.

As for myself, I've learned my lesson from the "XP multiplayer pack" incident, in which I complained bitterly about an "OS-specific upgrade" only to have them release a version for my OS shortly thereafter. I even understand why they didn't make a big deal out of the Win2k version. BVI, all is forgiven. Big sighs of relief at BVI.

And I think that a PC Mission Patch or Enhancement Subroutine or whatever containing the bits of extra content in the XBox version that can be ported to the PC (i.e., not XBox Live-reliant) is a wonderful idea.

I also think that a "prequel" mini-game featuring Mercury would rock. How much could Ms. Stamos charge for a few more pithy lines?
