Snooping is fun

on Tuesday, November, 25, 2003 6:40 PM

Every once in a while I take another snoop through the files in to see what interesting things I can find. Today I went through all the voice files for the game.

There are a lot of lines in there I've never heard while playing. I'm betting most of them went unused in the final game.

For example, there are these horribly distorted and warbled voices, that I'm guessing were supposed to be for the DataWraiths. If I recall correctly, the DataWraiths are silent in the final game. A wise choice. They're actually more creepy silent, I'd like to think. Not to mention, their lines would just have been rehashes of the ICPs' lines, anyway.

The Z-Lots have the most hilarious lines. "What's the fuss?" "I'm leaking green stuff!" "I'm losing little green bits!" "I'm scared!" "Cookies!" "I'm crunching numbers! Crunch, crunch . . . " and so on.

I found one line very interesting, have a listen to it.
Interesting Z-Lot line

Makes you wonder if they were originally supposed to be in the game . . . or is it just meant as an inside joke.

One of my favorites has to be the ICP complaining about his "standard substandard training". It's funny, and I don't recall ever hearing it in the game. That and "I love adding and subtracting..."order abortion pill morning after pill price where to buy abortion pill

The DataWraiths DO say things in the game (in somewhat "garbled" voices, I suppose) - it's just that it's not terribly loud. I heard them during the second Seeker fight because I was holed up in that corner underneath the walkway for a bit to make them come up close so that I could kill them more easily without worrying about getting pummeled by the Seeker. I almost didn't survive that fight on Hard - had to hit the Quick Reload key I know not how many times...

The rest of the game I usually aced them before they could get close enough for me to hear them talk.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

Where exactly are these files located? I've tried opening the CAB files, but for whatever reason, Window XP isn't opening them right (they appear to be empty files)

If you want to check out those sounds in , you need the program WinRez LT to look inside the game's .rez files, specifically Sound.rez. Look in the VOICE folder.

There are something like 2,000 files in there, though. So it will take a long time to go through them all.

It's funny, but I've never realized till now that there aren't any grid bugs in the game... If you think about it, there was only mention about it in the movie, but still..

I've always thought of grid bugs as game gliches... Even today, when I run across a game or app crash, I always shout, "Damn Grid Bugs!!!"...

It's a shame they didn't make it to the game, but I'm not a nitpicker... I love Tron 2.0....

Tron 2.0.... The game without grid bugs....

Don't worry, I love too. It's not perfect, but it's still a fantastic game. I think with more time, Monolith could have made it even better. But then, the game would never have gotten finished.

Hmm, maybe the Z-Lots ate all the Grid Bugs? That's where they went.

I did some more snooping, and came across even more interesting stuff. There's some old NOLF artwork inside the .rez files, believe it or not. But more importantly, there's Tron artwork that didn't get used in the final game. For example, did you know that there was originally going to be a Trash procedural? Wonder how that would've worked, exactly. Dragging useless subroutines to the trash? Hmm.

A lot of the stuff you've found COULD be activated with an expansion installed....

Nah. The stuff I found is clearly ideas that were abandoned during development, and Monolith either forgot or was too lazy to take it out. (Or maybe they left it in for snoopers like us, who appreciate this kind of stuff. )

I know the DataWraiths DO talk. In fact, they seem to repeat some lines that the ICPs say. I've heard a Wraith destinctly say "Stop executing escape routine". I'm 100% sure of it (especially since I just re-beat the game yesterday ).
