My last system also got pretty long in the tooth, before I finally upgraded. It was 5 years old. I've never waited that long to upgrade, before. I would always upgrade every 2-3 years on average, before that.
The reason I held off so long was 1) money
and 2) it wasn't really necessary. It wasn't until lately, that I noticed some of the latest games and applications were starting to run too slowly.
My new setup should last a while. Especially because if I do a swap of the CPU (dual to quad), increase the memory (2GB to 4GB), and swap the video card, it'll be almost like a new computer again.
