New blood seeks confidence from veterans...

on Tuesday, December, 31, 2002 10:47 AM
Okay units and unettes, this is it.

I've been a junkie of many sci-fi mythos, especially ones in the 70's/80's due being susseptable to being made a youthful impression on. You name it, Star Wars, Star Trek, 2001 Space Oydessy,... heck, let's go nuts here, even Space 1999! But man, while Star Wars has been a king to me, there has always been a special place reserved in my imagination for the all time great,Tron. The vision, the image, the color, the artistry, the clean and sterilized dreamworld,... it's an undeniable benchmark spectacle. Gotta love that movie.

Then there's the film's partner in crime, the arcade game. I could not be peeled way from that game. There was no other game that could have ever emerse a player deeper into it with it's haunting glow and techno atmosphere to say nothing about how cool that place the game took you was were you already dying to go. Gotta love that game.

I wanted one of those games ever since then and sort of vowed I'd do it. Not because it made sense, but specificly because it didn't. I was young, but still had enough maturity to know it wasn't going to be any easy to afford than it would be to store... or even explain as to why I bothered having it, but I didn't care. I managed to break my parents down enough to stop laughing and actually call some of the phone numbers to get a figure or two. While I thought it meant I was getting one step closer, in hindsight I can see it was their effort to get the final word on how impossible it was. I began to learn that you can't get a good one. The only ones you can manage to get have been spent and are butt ugly. Then they became hard to find. I basicly gave up. Mom and Dad found peace. Years passed.

Then came the internet.

One of the first curiousities I set out to find on Ebay was one of these arcade games, just to entertain the fringes of possibility. At first there were none. Then some turned up. I began doing my best to research what could go into owning such an old and maintenance UN friendly article. Could I take care of it or would it be my undoing? I began to find just enough resources to make it seem at least plausible, but even 'til now erase my sense of getting stuck with problems I wouldn't be able to fix.

But still, I am not deterred.

I finally found a place up north that specializes in aquiring, referbishing and reselling classic arcade games, etc. They have a Tron game for a very fair price and am currently researching it's condition right now. The problem is to fund this I must part with what would end up being the majority of my prized Star Wars collection. I can live with that, but it only doubles the complexity of the project as a whole. But nonetheless, I've begun the arduous task of getting it's value in a single sale.

Here I now stand, begining to let go of prize for another. Do I move forward?

What I'd like to know is any of you who do have one, could you familiarize me as much as possilble with the nature of this investment? Let me know what to watch out for and as much as you know about resources you know of to bring one of these games up to perfection as possible. Is there anyone who can produce good replacement parts, graphics, decals, etc.?

I need veterans to come forward to make me comfortable before I can bring myself to take the big plunge into preserving a piece of pop-culture history.

I'd say welcome, friend, but not here, not like this...because I wish I had a better response for your post! What a journey you're on here.

There are definitely some programs here who have refurbished or are in the process of refurbishing a Tron arcade game and I'll leave the details to them. But good luck to you!

And truly, welcome friend!

Surely you've seen The Phantom Menace!

Well, I was going to use a quote from Red Dwarf when Rimmer says to "put a trace" on Lister and was accused if it meaning nothing more that to sound cool, but I wasn't willing to chance that you've seen Red Dwarf before... BUT NOT EPISODE I!?!? That's unreal!

I do have a bit of a reputation for being tricksey, but I honestly didn't know where that quote came from. I did see Ep 2, though!!! Is that Anakin saying that?

You're much more likely to hear me quote along the lines of...it stole it from us, yes, preciousssssss...

**edit**

Oh, wait, did you say Episode 1? In that case...it must be Darth Maul, preciousssss, yesssss...

Boys from the Dwarf

Oh wow, someone else who's into Red Dwarf. That's a rare thing. I know what it is. My favorite show actually. *Can't wait til the movie finally comes out* I've only seen from the beginning to the first few episodes of season 8, due to PBS not showing it anymore.

So let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet, to meet the King of the Potato People, and beg him for your freedom, and you're telling me you're completly sane? I love that show.

So welcome. I am TriggerEXE and I love to smash virii with my SpOoNy mallet of DOOM! Hehe... I got into Tron shortly after it's release. I don't recall seeing it in theaters, but I had the read along book and the VHS tape (which got worn out due to repeated viewing). Now, thanks to technology, I can watch it again and again on the special edition DVD! I have several of the toys, including one of the Kubrick light cycles that's on my desk at work. Had all the figures when I was a kid, but they all got lost in that same place all the missing left socks in the universe go. I got em back thanks to eBay and the NECA reissues. Soon the Tron 2.0 figures will be joining them on the shelf.

Oh...

Yeah, the whole point of your message. ^_^ Hehe, I sorta forgot, what with all the Red Dwarf talk. I don't have a Tron arcade machine, but I've looked around online and toyed with the idea of getting one several times. I have a friend who had a Super Pacman machine once. It got hit by lightning one day and became inoperable and too expensive to fix. Seems to me that owning one would take a great deal of time and money. You'd have to protect that investment and be willing to shell out a few bucks here and there to keep it going. I know that the original Tron arcade game had the blacklights and joystick. Those are hard to come by if they break or get damaged. If you have the room, the money, and a strong enough desire, then go for it. Me, I don't have the money or the room, but I have the desire. Actually one of my dreams is to eventually have my own little arcade set up. I've recently taken on another job and moved to another city and have seen this place on the way to work that buys, sells, and rents arcade games. I've been meaning to stop by, but I never have the time or money to flaunt. If I ever do go in there, I'll ask some questions and get back to you. It is ultimatly up to the individual person though. If you deem the upkeep worth it, then go ahead and get it while you have the chance. As for giving up your Star Wars stuff, it's up to you. It comes down to which you desire more. I wouldn't think of it in terms of which one will be worth more later, but which one will bring you the most happiness in the long run. There are some things I'd give up everything I own for, but that's another story. If I could trade in all my Star Wars stuff for a Tron arcade machine, I probably would. Now anyway. I haven't been into Star Wars as much recently and have shelved most of my collectibles or boxed them up. I highly doubt my collection would be worth much, but if it got me enough to buy Tron, I would gladly part with it. where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill onlineabortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Arcade Info

on Friday, January, 03, 2003 6:48 PM
Alright dude. I stopped by the arcade shop today and talked to the owner. Really nice guy. They didn't have any Tron arcade machines, but he's got my number. He's going to an auction or something soon and he says he'll look for one. *shrugs* I can't really afford one right now, but I'll at least go and take a look at it if he gets one. I asked him about the upkeep on one and he said that they're not much trouble. As long as you take good care of it, it'll last a long long time. It's those machines in actual arcades that take such abuse. So I would say go for it if you've got the chance. I would.

BTW, that place was SO SWEET! All sorts of cool arcade games. Old and brand new. Some reconditioned ones that looked fantastic. Almost new. All the sounds and sights. Right there at my fingertips. Expensive though. In the thousands and up. Worth it though in my opinion. Considering the great shape they're in. Depending on where you get one, you could get a 90 day warranty on a refurbished one and a full year on brand new ones. If there was a way I could afford to get one, I would. And I may. So, yeah. Go for it man! Just make sure of who you're buying it from and it's condition. If you're going to get one, get a good one.

Thanks Tra-tra-trigger (ala 80's "I wanna be a cowboy"). That's what I'm lookin' to hear.

I'm still looking to sell my SW collection. I'm exhausting any chances in selling it to any local comic/collectibles buisness with little luck so far. They all are trying to talk me out of my good items and leave me with just a hollow sea of common stuff. Nah. I'd rather get the money some place else then let someone else profit from my hard work.

It's beginning to look like my best bet will be selling one huge chunk on Ebay. Trouble is, I've never dealt with Ebay, selling or buying. I'm afraid having no background will hurt my credibility and my collection's value would suffer.

I dunno. We'll see how my next few ideas fare.

That is why I am thinking over here.

on Sunday, January, 05, 2003 1:18 PM
I know the arcades video games are slightly different than the usual PC repairs that I do over here. But it will be worth the investment to get one. Since I do know computer repairs. Its just learning at a different level on on the components thatmake upthe arcade games as well. Nice learning curve there when repairing.

If I had the time, money and the space I would go for one myself. But since I don't have all three. Its a no go for the time being. Until I can get all three things together. And have fun with the game Tron. Unless I could get the Pieces for it even then and go to triotech and get their cyber 4000 enclosed unit and assmble it with that and have my own custom machine of Tron as a side down verion of the earlier game. Take a look at the link here to see the chassis and other related machines http://www.trio-tech.com/

A cool thing to have don't you.

While I trust myself to make a Tron game 'look' better, maybe even repair one, I wouldn't know beans about building one, especially with alternative parts.

Mind you, I don't have those three magical things you mentioned either, time, money or space. However, some objectives are worthy of the struggle, or need to be made so, just remind ourselves that we only live once.

Besides, I don't plan to play it much at all. I could get a copy to run on my PC if that was my concern. It's not. I want a technological piece of pop-culture history glowing in the corner of my domain. It's one of those things that if you don't make a point to own yourself, you just might not ever see one again as long as you live.

DANG I wish I had a buyer for my SW collection!

I know the feeling

on Sunday, January, 05, 2003 4:04 PM
Well I don't know on he to build one either especially the inner guts of the arcade game. Computer wise no problem. because you only have things to connect to from one place to another. Like using a hard drive cables goes from there on the hard disk to there on the motherboard. And it only works one way. Where as with the arcades games are slightly different. Because there are nothing marked or set up as what is set up on a pc. Thats where the learning curve is in this case.

I guess it depends on what you want as well. I would like other younger generation to know about it as well. Since it is a cultural movie that should be seen by everyone.

Selling on eBay

on Monday, January, 06, 2003 9:03 AM
I've never sold anything on eBay, but I've bid and won many things. I also had a boss that sold stuff all the time on eBay. Here's what you do. Just go sign up at eBay, take some pictures of your stuff either with a digital camera, or regular film and scan them so you can upload them onto a server. You can go to Ranchoweb.com and sign up for a free image host account to use. As long as the images stay below 150kb, they'll let you use em. Once you've got that done, go on over to eBay and set up an auction. Be sure to set a reserve price for your item. That is the lowest amount you're willing to sell them for. That way if no one bids as high as you like, you can put it back out for auction without having any obligation to sell. It helps to include a "Buy It Now" option. This will let people see how much they could pay to buy your collection immediatly rather than bid and wait on an auction to close. New developments...

on Monday, January, 06, 2003 2:45 PM
Thank you, Trigger. That is exactly the kind of help and straight information I'm looking to get. Many thanks.

But HEY! Guess what? I'm getting dangerously close to getting a local buyer of my SW collection! In that event, I won't need to sell on Ebay, IF it pans out. A local comicbook/collectibles chain sent me a reply that they are very interested and want more details. Not in the bag, but dangling over it on a knat's wing.

Once that's accomplished, the hard-nosed shopping for a Tron game can commence. I'm currently just sending 'browse corrospondence', if you know what I mean, with dealers and owners of them. What I'm really hoping I can get lucky with is finding one local enough to go see then get instead of "no see/buy/ship to/cry cause it stinks" kind of buisness.

Keep on wishin' me luck 'cause it seems to be working!
