Okay my pc is 7 years old its starting to show its age, it was amazing when I got it, cost me over £1000 sure but now I am starting to think its over the hill.......its also starting to heat up a lot and the cpu isn't as speedy as it once was. Anyway I've been looking for something to replace my old Q6600 to give me high end gaming and performance. So I've narrowed it down to a few choices:
AMD

Not a bad chip at all for the price and certainly is a vast improvement on my Q6600

Interestingly enough the Q6600 seems to be only slightly less effective than the intel i7 sandy bridge despite having a higher clock speed and 8 logical cores, I was leaning more towards intel due to good experience with them but when you compare the cost between the two chips intel doesn't seem to be worth the £per buck cost as the AMD does. Thoughts?

I'm not much help... years ago I knew someone who totally swore by AMD over Intel, but that was a long time ago, and quality can change quick in the world of technology.

Yeah I know, what you mean. I am an IT technician but that doesn't mean I know everything there is to know about CPUs its a specialist area, there are arguments for and against each. The main FOR intel has is the multithreading BUT I have read several reports that state HT can be bad for gaming and can decrease your performance. And there is the old 4 vs 8 core argument but most programs don't use all cores but then you combat that with program affiliation.

If you want absolute top performance, go Intel. If you want something like 80% of the performance of Intel's top of the line right now for a lot less money, go AMD.
Also, AMD changes their CPU sockets less often. With Intel, you'll quickly be stuck without an upgrade path on your motherboard because Intel's next line of CPUs won't fit the socket any more. AMD tends to keep the same socket for a few years. And when they do change sockets, AMD usually continue making versions of their newer CPUs that will work with older sockets. Meanwhile, Intel is notorious for not doing that. Forcing you to buy a new mobo along the the CPU.
Intel's Hyper-Threading is only good for productivity work, not gaming. Even then, most people don't even bother with it and go for the version of the i5 without Hyper-Threading.
If you do decide to go AMD, I strongly recommend getting any of the new 3-series FX chips (Piledriver) and avoiding the 1-series (Bulldozer). The 8350, 8320, 8300, 6300, 4320, 4300 are the ones to get.

This is what I mean, the intel yeah okay their top of the line is awesome however I am not prepared to pay an extra £300 for it not when that could get me 16GB of RAM and a fairly decent graphics card I could crossfire with my current card which would probably give me more of a performance boost anyway.

Yeah I've noticed this, in 6 years there have been at least 4 slot chances in the intel range.

This is where my largest issue takes with intel, people are saying go for intel due to its hyperthreading yet also to disable this because it actually causes games to perform less! Which is also whats pushing me towards the FX8350 8 core, it's the same cost as the i5 but has a higher cache rating and also higher clock speed 4Ghz 8Mb cache vs i5 3.2Ghz 6mb Cache. Also 8 core vs 4 core, I just wanted to know if there was any reason at ALL not to go for the AMD something fundamental such as overheating issues or unreliability.

I personally haven't used an Intel CPU in any system I've built, during the last 10 years. I've had very little trouble with these AMD systems. Never overheated or failed on me. My current computer is 5 years old now. While I did some minor upgrades to it in the meantime (swapped CPU and video card for better ones), it's still essentially the same build.
I was seriously thinking about switching to Intel, should I do a major upgrade again. But then AMD released the updated 3-series FX CPUs, which are a big improvement over their previous FX parts. They were way behind, but now they've caught up significantly in terms of performance. It's no longer a cut-and-dried decision.
If you're adventurous and want to try overclocking, AMD doesn't lock their CPUs. Meanwhile, Intel sells both locked and unlocked versions, charging you extra for the unlocked CPUs that can be overclocked.
The GPU is more important now than the CPU, anyway, if gaming is a priority. You can take the money you save on the CPU and invest it in a better GPU and other parts. Overall, I just think AMD offers better value.
