 Posts: 89 | TRON 2D-3D Conversion...would it be worth it? on Thursday, August, 18, 2011 10:43 AM
Greetings Programs!
I was watching the original TRON on Blu-Ray for the Thousandth time (The restoration is so Beautiful!) and I started wondering what TRON would look like had it been shot in 3D. Then I started thinking about 3D conversion. Ive seen some GREAT 2D to 3D conversions like Alice in Wonderland, G-Force, Green Lantern. Ive also got to see a Pre-Screening of The Lion King in 3D, which looked Amazing!. Disney really did a good job on converting Lion King.
So anyways I started looking for tutorials on converting 2D to 3D in After Effects and sure enough, its possible. So I though "HEY! Why dont I just try converting TRON myself?!". But before I start spending HOURS converting 1 minute of footage, I just wanted to know if It would even be worth seeing TRON in 3D?
If I do go through with it, I'll only be converting the scenes within the Grid. Kinda like how in TRON: Legacy, the only scenes in 3D were in the Grid.
I might start doing some test screenshots and upload them here for your opinion.

Actually, Tron was rumored to be re-released, in theaters, in 3D. This was before Disney Execs. were spooked at a park showing of Tron, at which the crowd laughed at its crude graphics and costumes. This is why the Blu-Ray was held back from release, before Tron: Legacy.
Getting back to your question, just think of all the scenes that would look great in 3D. There are plenty, if you think about it. Tanks, lightcycles, recognizers, and disks coming at you. The fly behind with recognizers, after "Illegal Exit". How about Flynn being digitized for transport? Would that not be awesome in 3D. You could use that shot for your trial run.

It definitely would look cool.
Tron's bright colors and big enviroments would fit 3D really well.
