Help with my earphone plug in thingie

on Sunday, March, 13, 2011 8:44 PM
Yes you can tell by the fact I call it a thingie, I have lost my techie ways. There is the small hole on my CPU into which you plug in your earphones, right? After so much use, the hole will no longer hold the plugs. They just fall out. I can't listen to music at the top of the decibal scale any longer. Does anyone know of a way to fix what is basically a stripped CPU earphone plug? Thanks!

Proper terms are jack (the hole) and plug (the stick). Inside those things is a flat metal 'spring' that presses against the plug and holds it in. Yours is probably bent, this giving you a bad connection and the falling-out-ness. If you feel comfortable messing with it. get a tiny screwdriver and trying prying it back. I really don't recommend it though...

Really? and I have a tiny screwdriver too. Can I open the CPU and go from the inside?

Well, let's get a couple more details. Is this a desktop computer with a headphone jack on the front? If that's the case, then you should be able to take it out if you open it up, but I'm not sure that would gain you much.

This is more or less what the component looks like. You can't really get at the 'spring' any better having taken it off.

Can it be replaced then? Geek Squad, where are you? Desktop model Dell with the ports in front. I live in an apartment and loved turning my music up high and not disturb the neighbors. The speakers work but I miss my earphones with the extra long cord. :-)

It can be replaced. But Geek Squad would probably have to send it off to a 3rd party repair facility and you'd be out a computer for a week or two.

If you are not afraid to replace it yourself, you could try asking DELL support if they can send you the part (on warranty or paid if that is the case) and try replacing it yourself. Personally I would rather have white hot pokers shoved into my eyes than send my computer to anyone for tech support. I got into building computers expressly for the purpose of not having to rely on anyone else to solve my computer issues.abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

In CA, I had a friend like you, Isoline, who refused outside support and learned to build his own comps. I miss him.

I'll check on the part needed and see if Dell has. MY comp is so old already (aren't they always?) that it might be worth waiting until I buy a new model. I want one that plays Blue Rays so I don't need a separate device for that.

I know, I tended to move alot when I was a young adult out of college so I kept a lean appearance to my appartment and learned how to do computer repair so that I could keep that part of my life private. My computers have been like a schoolgirls diary (just not all pretty looking), I am rabid about anyone going in it for anything. So, I never did well with plumbing or woodworking, but I darn sure got a handle on computer parts and circuit boards. I don't suppose that you have powered speakers with an earphone jack built in? I happen to have the earphone jack on the front of the comp and on the speakers.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

I don't think so. Just checked. All I have is a subwoofer speaker and two smaller side speakers. No extra plugs ins.

Oh, try this too.

USB sound cards.

I have a buddy who manages to fry his sound card every couple of months. He says an external sound card saved him.
