apparently hand coded in C++
a guy i know was asking me what music format DP was in the movie.
his theory was mp3s but it doesn't sound right at all.
couldn't be PCM as that was extremely rare for the time.
as the grid exists from 83 and stops being worked on from the outside in 1989
the tech has to be from that time period.
certain bits of information i just need to figure out, like geek OCD.
well i know the midi format was created in 1983 but didn't show up in most music equipment for a few years after that. i couldn't seem to find any behind the scenes work on early arcade games until i perused repair sites.
so if the Tron arcade was in the film actually made by Encom,
presumably the guts are the same.
the music chip is the general instruments corp's. AY-3-8910.
as this chip was used in many arcade games and home computers and available until 1990 or so, it stands to reason the grid would have the same setup.
for those curious as to how insanely tough writing music for arcade games of the early 80s was:

That's some good information! You're right, given the tech of the grid at the time, they probably wouldn't be MP3's. Thanks for doing some research on this.

I think that the equipment is not from the 80s since Flynn was always ahead of its time. He did think of wifi before it was 'created'.

I'd say maybe .cda (Compact Disc Audio), as I think audio CDs were around in the late 80's.
TRON 2.0 (PC) name - TRON.dll
I'll play any mode, but I'm best at LC.
PSN - TRON-dll
XBOX Live/Games for Windows Live - TRONdll
-I have a Wii, DS, and 3DS. PM me to exchange friend codes. |

i did contemplate that one as my family had a cd player in 85 (when discs cost 45 bucks a pop) but seeing as Kevin was a game programmer, gaming/personal computing hardware made the most sense. especially since much of what was on the grid arena was new game types. (at least as far as betrayal showed.)

Music files are not programs. They're simply collections of data that programs translate into music.
That said, since the grid mostly was never made for User requests, and more just a "let's make a Sim City and see what happens" kind of a thing, DP in the film was probably created specifically as DJ's for the grid only.
Another reason it doesn't make sense for them to be MP3's or anything like that is... has anyone ever seen an MP3 file create another MP3 file? An MP3 doesn't have functions or parameters, it is simply a set of instructions that get sent to a media player.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

but the old method was a program essentially, creating a string of instructions to the chip.
a series of clock interruptions that resulted in the pitches we heard as "music".
there were no midi players in the old arcade games so they were essentially executables.

I agree that the Daft Punk characters would have been a type of media player program. They seem to have no other function in the film. I just hope they got out before CLU blew the place up.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online
