It's sad that real technological innovation is kept hidden in labs at MIT and such. There's some amazing things I've read about that are being done in the reseach into the possible practical applications of nanotubes, graphine, personal psuedo-holographic HUD displays, etc...*sigh*

I hear ya. One thing that always stuck in my mind was from a documentary way back in the 80s about computers and it stated that the U.S. military has an emerging technology division that is 20+ years ahead of what is in available the "civilian" marketplace. Everything you mentioned and the scientists involved almost always get bought out by the government and placed under national security. CES for the past two years has become very stale when it comes to innovations. The few years prior I went were awesome, with the introduction of OLEDs, LED LCD TVs, modern smart phones, Windows Vista and 7, amongst other things.
This year was by far the least interesting. There were a few neat innovations if you were able to find them amongst the huge glut of Apple product accessories and "me too" TV companies. There was also a shit ton of tablets that all did the same things with varying quality, with the exception of Blackberry's that looked very nice and stood out.
Even Microsoft's booth this year was pretty lame. The only two things I saw there that weren't out yet were Age of Empires Online (which just depressed me all to hell seeing it), and IE9. But even then, the build of IE 9 was the same beta you can get now!
