So I got to see TRON Legacy today. As I walked into the theatre and got my seat, I was excited with anticipation on how this sequel would play out.
To say the least ... I feel as if this movie was another "Lucas Nightmare." I have to admit while it was a special effects / CGI extravaganza, I was disappointed in the majority of missing elements and failures of the story and TRON Universe.
Yes ... I did go in there as a fan of the original movie. So of course I was biased when it came to quite a few things. And yes, I know that stories do have plot holes and continuity issues ... but I think after the years they took to create this movie, they could have tied up most of the obvious loose ends.
First and foremost. TRON himself. The protagonist who struggled to make the ENCOM mainframe a free system, was easily dispatched and re-purposed by CLU 2.0. Although, at this point in time in the story line, I can see him as being obsolete or not having the functionality of CLU 2.0 ... however it was disappointing to see the "Watchdog of the MCP" go down so easily. (Very short fight sequence)
The upgraded Light Cycles were cool and well executed. The upgraded Recognizers were also done well. Legacy added a new vehicle ... the Light Jet. Again, this was a nice fresh addition to the universe, and was also well executed. The upgraded Solar Sailer was a nice touch as well.
Missing from the movie was the Light Tank. Something to me that was another staple of the universe that was just as popular as the Light Cycles, Recognizers, and Bits. (As a side note, I saw trailers for the TRON Legacy game [Evolution], the Light Tank is included there, but not in the movie ... I find that to be odd, especially for people who have never seen the original TRON Movie.)
The other missing element that bothered me was the absence of the "Bit." While there was a model of two of them at Flynn's place ... the lack of their appearance made me forget for a moment that they were in a "Digital World." Also, the dinner scene made no sense to me at all. If original programs have no need for food or sleep, then what was the purpose of these things for Users? Also, how were things like that created and/or used by human visitors? Why didn't they serve things like that at the "End of Line Club?" The original TRON refered to the water as "Power from a pure source." And we all know that humans cannot live off of electricity.
Other missing elements from the story ... what ever happened to Lora/Yori? That was never explained. After the disgrace and termination of Ed Dillinger, how was his son able to garner a position within ENCOM? There was a lack of technological terminology in the dialogue. With today's people using techie terms in everyday conversations ... that was a bit disappointing as well. The lack of interaction with other programs was also annoying. The only interaction between programs seemed to be in the games. (Disc Arena and Light Cycle Arena) In the original TRON ... the characters interacted with different programs outside of the Game Grid. Dumont and Yori for example.
The introduction of the ISO's was well done ... but felt there could have been more to it. Which I'm sure will be a major part of the next story ... if they create another movie from this one.
In the end of my B-Rant ... Legacy was a decent movie. It just feels like it was a soulless script that came off a conveyor belt somewhere. With the omission of key things, I'm sure it leaves room for more sequels. But Hollywood is more about being a money making spin-off machine than producing anything that would be considered "Original or Canon."
But again ... I'm jaded and bitter like most people these days. Especially when it comes to things from my childhood. But ... I look forward to reading all the comments to this, and seeing how you people rip me a new one. I know that there is more that I can get into about this movie, but I'm human ... I get tired after typing and staring at a computer screen for hours. LOL
Have a good one!

But it's possible this is his first post and we know this site's search and navigation is inferior to normal forums, so I give him some slack. We all started with post #1 at some point in our forum lives. At least he's giving constructive thoughtful analyses and not blatantly trolling. For that, I say, "Welcome to the Sector, program!". An admin could always thread merge, if needed and desired... Like in other forums when someone doesn't realize their mistake

There was more story in there than its given credit for. A lot of people will just see the effects and eye candy, and get distracted from the plot. Would you say the first movie had more of a story than this one? I don't think so. In the first movie, its just Flynn trying to get information about who really created and owns the games, and does so after entering the computer world. That's pretty much it. In this one, you have Flynn who is trapped by his own creation, who had a dramatic change of character due to his finding out Flynn's feelings on the ISOs and suddenly thinking more of them and not the Basics that he created. Kevin Flynn promised Clu that THEY would usher in a new era for the real world. But when the ISOs show up, Flynn places more importance on them and Clu becomes jealous. You also have a son who is looking for the father and a dramatic reunion. You suddenly have Flynn's digital creation, and physical creation fighting each other. Flynn had created this magnificant world and had it all corrupted and taken from his hands by his own creation. It touches on ancient lore about gods and humans. All of this is beautifully gift wrapped in state of the art CGI technology, which the original movie pioneered. I think its about time this whole franchise was given the respect its long due.
Tron was the hero of the first movie, and its an interesting twist to have him seen here as a villain. Otherwise it would have been too much like the original movie. The reason he was defeated so quickly is because Clu is a system admin and has more resources available to him. Yes, it sucks what happened to him, but that leaves the door open to have him be featured more in the future. Besides, Tron was in the games and comics to a more important degree. I do wish we had gotten to see his face though. I think there may be some deleted scenes that will end up on the Blu Ray release that could possibly explain things further.
The food was only there for Kevin and Sam. I'm sure Flynn designed a way to structure energy into the shapes (and possibly tastes) of real food that he loves. You don't see any of that at the End of Line Club because the programs there have never heard of or seen human food. All they know is energy, and that's all they consume. The whole reason everything looks more "realistic" inside the computer now is all Flynn's doing to make it a more pleasant looking environment for himself and other possible users that may have entered the system in the future.
I agree about the tanks, because I like them a lot. I did see some tanks in the movie, but they were very underused.
It was explained in the comics that Lora sort of broke it off with Alan and moved across the country to work at a different company. It isn't in the movie because it isn't that integral to the plot. That pretty much goes for the Bit as well. It was stated in the game that the Bit was outdated and mainly serves as a guide pointer for ISOs who didn't know where to go. All the ISOs are already gone in the movie, so there's no need for them to be there.
I also agree about the interaction with other programs. I kept waiting for what would be this movie's Ram or Crom to show up and hang around with Sam, but it never happened. Instead we get Quorra, which isn't bad, but she's in everything all of a sudden and always needing to be rescued. :P There was interaction with Castor, whom I felt turned traitor rather quickly... We all saw that coming though. So that's an area that needs improvement. There probably just wasn't time for anything like that in this movie, given the story its trying to convey in such a short amount of time.
I'm pretty sure Ed Dillinger Jr. was hired by someone other than Flynn, and probably after he disappeared. But it is odd to see any relation of Dillinger Sr. working at Encom. If I were Flynn, I'd have made a stipulation that no one related to him could ever work for the company in any way. But that's just me. He was put there as a way to have something interesting pop up in the sequel.
All of the stuff about the ISOs was covered in the games and comics. I think they should have had more focus in the movie too, but again, you can only do so much with the small amount of time given in a movie. That's why the games and comics are there.
Sure, the movie has a few open questions and odd things here and there, but if you read the comics and played the games, it all makes more sense. While they say you don't have to do any of that to enjoy the movie, it certainly helps cover those empty spots. I hope they make some sort of animated comic as an extra for the Blu Ray release that helps cover those areas more for people who didn't get to read the comic or anything. Its an awesome movie that was made mainly for us Tron fans, but also in an attempt to breathe new life into the franchise. I think its succeeded in both aspects.

Having to read the comics and play TE should not be required to understand or appreciate TL. All of that should have been supplemental to TL.
I think the sequel should have instead been about what happened from the time period post -Tron to Flynn being trapped in the server. It really would have been cool to see the old 80's cars, technology, clothes, and music. The movie would have been a lot more plot driven but still had the visuals on a more primitive grid. Seeing Flynn's obsession with creating the grid drive him away from Sam, Alan, and Encom. First contact with the Iso's and stuff like that. Then make TL.

Psst, Lora is married to Alan. Did you miss that video (not in the movie, was part of ARG) where they were at an Encom presentation that Sam crashed?

I really don't think the comics and TE are required to understand or appreciate the plot, particularly in regards to Lora. Her and Alan's relationship simply isn't important to the plot of this movie. It's interesting, and I certainly wouldn't mind seeing or hearing about her, but it is in no way vital to this movies story.

Great review Mendicant. I feel exactly the same way.
My thought is that many of the people who have given Tron Legacy positive reviews are somehow blinded by the shortcomings of the film, of which, outweighed the strong points.
I am a true fan of the original Tron, but because of many of the items you have pointed out which are true, I have been left disapointed with Tron Legacy and hope for a better sequel next time around. Good review. Good to know I'm not the only who isn't snowjobbed here.

Obviously it is. Why are Tron fans posting here asking questions about the movie and being told the answers were in the ARG, comic books, or TE? LIke I said before, TL should have been made after a post-Tron to Flynn trapped movie. To a lot of non-Tron fanboys it is almost the equivalent of The Empire Strikes Back being made first instead of Star Wars. where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

...That's the whole POINT to having the supplemental material in the first place! If you want to know that part of the story, then play the games and read the comics. If you don't care enough to know, then stop complaining. All you needed to know to understand the plot of the movie was in the movie. None of the side stuff matters to get that point across. The story of the movie gets told as it needs to, and so you don't HAVE to read the comics or play the games to enjoy or understand it. Its just that the story surrounding the main story is available in other formats. Seeing Kevin worry around in the digital world and get all emotional due to his wife's death and constantly dwelling on the fact that he spends more time in the computer world than the real world would have been boring. I still stand by what I said earlier, and haven't seen anything to disprove.
The original was great, inspiring, and original for its time. This movie is a sequel to that, so the originality (as far as going into the computer world) is gone. What we get is a great story which was much deeper than the original, one of a kid effects that have never been done in a 3D movie before, and a great cast to round it all out. Comparing it to Lucas' nightmare Star Wars abortion is apples to rotten fruit. I didn't see any boring senate-like scenes, lame Jar Jar-like characters, or pointless effect and character shots. Its all done to please both the fans both new and old.
