Graphics Card Upgrade for a Dell E520, please help?

on Tuesday, October, 19, 2010 7:00 AM
ok so here's my PC's manual:

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dime520/en/SM_EN/techov.htm#wp1053345

here the card I'm looking at getting since the 256 MB video memory of my 8600GT is underpar for some current PC games like Ghostbusters and Tron Evolution

http://www.buy.com/prod/evga-geforce-9400-gt-512-mb-ddr2-550-mhz-64-bit-pci-e-2-0-directx-10/q/sellerid/24775803/loc/101/210807917.html or

I don't want to buy and install a new power supply, so is this card compatible with my system? These cards seem like they might be?abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

Just for future reference, don't use Ghostbusters as a means of determining whether your PC is up to date or not. That game was a direct and stripped-down port of the 360 version. From what I've heard, it doesn't even start if you have anything less than a 512MB card, which is just ridiculous.

I myself can't really effectively help with choosing a new graphics card, but if there's a Micro Center store around where you live, I can't recommend it enough. They'll find you the best card in your price range and try to save you as much money as possible. Sorry if I sound like an advertisement, lol.

Shadow, the link you posted to the manual actually didn't provide much in the way of useful information. But it gave me the model number, so I looked up the specs on your computer. The only really weak component in your PC is the power supply. It makes it difficult to upgrade to a better video card without potentially overloading it.

Also, TRON.dll is right about Ghostbusters. Don't use it as a means of measuring performance. It was poorly coded and unoptimized, so it ran much slower than it needed to on anyone's machine.

As for thinking about a 9400GT as an upgrade, my simple advice is: don't. That card actually performs worse than the card you have now.

If you'd like to upgrade to something more substantial but remain on a budget, then I'd recommend either a 9600GT from Nvidia or 5670 from ATI. Unfortunately, the 9600GT is pushing the limit of what your power supply can handle. While the 5670 should be okay. The 5670 also supports DirectX 11, which the 9600GT does not.

So unless you really want to go Nvidia again, ATI is probably the better option right now. The 9600GT is about neck-and-neck with the 5670, but uses more power and has no DX11 support. There are "Eco" and "Green" versions of the 9600GT that use less power, but they also run slower.

i'm looking for cheap and decent card that has more video memory than a 8600GT's 256 MB..... from a quick google search, the 9600GT is a bit too high in price for me.

You wont be able to get a card with more memory and performs better than your current card for less than $70. If budget is a concern then the ATI 5570 is the cheapest option, but for $10 more the 5670 performs quite a bit better. They both have more memory, too.

The 9400GT is definitely a waste of your time and money. Same goes for the 9500GT.

what so bad about the 9400GT? reviews seem mostly positive on it.

It's slower than your 8600GT. It's a downgrade, not an upgrade.

Do a Google search on "8600GT vs. 9400GT" (without the quotes) and see for yourself. You asked for help, and I'm giving you advice, trying to help you avoid making a bad purchase. Just trust me and take my word for it, the card you've been looking at won't perform any better than what you've got now. Even though it has a higher model number and more memory, that doesn't automatically make it better.

If you're not willing to spend at least $70 then stick with what you've got, because it's already good enough to run Evolution.

You should stick with newegg as you'll have more variety. In addition, you can simply find that same model on feebay & see if you find it much more inexpensively (possibly used) Aside from that, you really should have tossed your deluxe id disc at the kids that were playing frisbee at electronica opening night on friday as I saw you there.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

If i threw the delux Identity Disc, it probably would be damaged badly and not work any more, and i dont think it's safe thowing a large piece of *hard* plastic at kids.

I don't need a law suit from some angry parents for accidently hurting their kid by throwing the identity disc at them.... the two discs aren't made of nerf foam.

Having 256MB would have been fine. Few games use 512MB and almost none use 1GB. Still, as always with games, more (more processing power, more memory) is better. But don't get too hung up on the memory. It's the video chip and its performance (speed) that matters most.

Like I said earlier, you should be looking at either an Nvidia 9600GT or ATI 5670. The only problem with the 9600GT is it uses a fair bit more power and it might overload your power supply. Maybe. While the 5670 uses less power than the 9600GT and provides the same performance. There's also a rumor that the 5670 will soon drop in price because ATI (well, AMD now) is introducing their new 6000 series cards in a couple of days. That could mean low power, 512MB, and DX11 for less than the $70 it's at now. Perhaps even 1GB for $70.

EDIT: Well hey, look at what I found. $73.99 with rebate.

I think the others have steered you right so all I will add is a plug for Newegg. I got my new card from them for a great price.
