A few years ago, the King Tut exhibit came back to Los Angeles for the first time since the late 1970s.
My mother had always raved about seeing the King Tut death mask, the big gold one you always see. That mask was featured in all of the ads, and was one of the drivers for me to pay lots of money for tickets and dragging my wife to see King Tut.
Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the event to discover that 90% of what was in the exhibit was actually from the tombs of King Tut's aunt and uncle a few tombs down the road from his. There was only one item I saw that was directly attributed to Tut, and that was a flimsy necklace that sat underneath the gold mask that I was not going to see because despite the ads, it was not there!
Now, to be fair, I got to see some amazing Egyptian antiquities, and those were cool. However, I felt like I got burned because the thing they used to advertise and drag me in was not part of what I was going to see. I felt like I got something for my money, but I was still ripped off too.
So why am I saying this in my review of ElecTRONica? Flynn's Arcade.
At E3 2009 Flynn's Arcade at Comicon was a fully functional arcade with a secret room behind the scenes where you got to see pre-production art and the lightcycle full scale model.
E3 2010 featured Flynn's secret office and lab and an entrance to the digital world and the End Of The Line Club from the film. Really cool things for the fans.
Flynn's Arcade at elecTRONica features the walls from the arcade, the video games, the neon, and the effects that lead you to believe you are going to get the same experieince here too.
The surprise for fans is that there is no area behind the TRON arcade machine! NOTHING AT ALL!! You can peek through the crack and see an old chair back there, but there is no payoff behind the TRON arcade machine at all. A HUGE letdown for me as I had gotten the impression from several sources that this was going to be there.
It was King Tut all over again.
Again, to be fair, elecTRONica has a lot to offer. The place came alive around 7 PM with lights and sounds and there was a lot to do.
I got to see the screening with the sneak preview in 3D and it looked awesome. There were a few bits I had not seen before, but nothing earth shattering. Beau Garrett and the sirens.....I want action figures....the big 7 inch ones for my collection. They rock. The girl with the big beautiful eyes who retrieves Sam's disc is gorgeous.
The Laserman show looked cool from 100 feet away. The "programs" standing about and dancing were neat. One dancer in particular was great and you will see in my pics tomorrow.
The visuals were great, TRON merchandise was freely available. The only special thing I found was the elecTRONica t-shirt with the logo on it. Otherwise it was just stuff you can get anyplace else. There were some cool crew shirts and hats that I would not mind owning.
So, was it worth it? Yes, but I still feel like Disney half-assed the arcade and ruined a big part of the experience for me. I had a great time, met some cool people, and got some awesome pictures, but I will always be disappointed that there was nothing behind that TRON machine.
A sour taste despite the eye candy.
I'll be curious to hear other opinions.
Pictures will be available late in the day tomorrow in the TRON Legacy section of
