SFX of TRON Legacy

on Thursday, July, 22, 2010 6:05 PM
Hi all! I hope a similar thread doesnt exist yet... I think theres some discussion to be had about the special effects of the new movie, I have some thoughts regarding the look and also the philosophy (if you will) of the effects that we have seen...

Now that the new trailer is out, we have a pretty holistic feel of the effects arsenal being used in Legacy. I find that the world looks remarkable; cold blue, distant blurred cg environments, which are realistic but also digital and etheral in a way. Loving that. And the light cycles seem a perfect upgrade of the designs from the early 80s. Of course, Syd Mead's designs for the original lightcycle have now been fully realised thanks to now unrestrained CG capability...

But I'm pretty disappointed with what I've seen of the CG head replacement...

I'm in two minds about this, it can look stunning and very real when in the scene and can really enhance performances very subtly. Like for example the ageing in Benjamin Button or to add levels of violence that you cant get from actors like in Irreversible. But here in Tron legacy, the effect is to create a younger Jeff Bridges... What I think has happened is that the uncanny valley has opened up wide. I'm sure technology is incredible, but the overall effect is really odd, even more so in the HD trailer. For me at least.

I guess my problem with this is that the CG effects in TRON were chosen because of they're look, plasticy, artificial and perfect for the job. Its ironic that films have embraced CG as a means to create perfect human replicas when the effect is often rupulsion and a lack of empathic characters. I know this is a strong opinion, but doesnt it seem odd that TRON used CG effects to its absolute advantage, whereas TRON legacy is using CG effects that may hinder the whole performance of an important character? 30 years of FX development and to me things have gone backwards in a way.

Still super excited for the movie and this one gripe certainly wont ruin it all for me, as it looks like the perfect sequel to my favourite film! Let me know what you think

As I've said before, I like that Clu looks fake. Further separates him from Flynn. Plys, the young (but not clu young) flynn at the very beginning was damn near perfect.

I'm 60% certain that the some of the clips showing CG for Clu's is not 100% finished... I think in the final film it will be "polished up". Some shots in the actual film and the new trailer look quite a bit more polished than in the first trailer.

Digital Domain and the whole TL production are working heavy on post production CGI & VFX, polishing things up, and even re-shooting whole scenes all the up until November this much I know.

Sam Flynn's suit via VFX/CGI polish looks BAD A**!!! omg it's like still pictures BARELY do it justice. When you see it you'll be like "woah!"

I agree with you here, DD did superb similar work on brad pitt... and all the suits look phenomenal. But shots that make it to a trailer are usually locked off and will only get a re-visit if theres a backlash. I do hope they're not finished, but i fear thats it for the effect, they wouldn't showcase un-finished examples of a key effect with only months to go (imagine how many clu shots there are to polish and this was probably the best worked...)

BUT, when clu is revealed, I'll be damned if thats not the most advanced photo real CG I've ever seen. I think this film may just have something to really say in replicating the human likeness in film. I guess TRON really had something to say about using a brand new visual in film, maybe tron legacy will update movie VFX in proving that we can have any actor at any age acting against themselves in live action. Scary stuff.

idk.

I'm pretty sure they wouldn't make an Imax sized PLACEHOLDER render. That's just not practical.

I wouldn't mind if that was the case, but it's not. The anti-aging effect used in X-Men 3 would've served the flashback real world Flynn better, because I, like others, am unable to NOT see the oddness around the mouth and nose. He looks like he's got something inside his cheeks, puffing them out.

Okay. You people do realize that all the footage still needs to be fully rendered... right?

It's rediculous to assume that even though they're doing finishing touches right up to the final weeks before release, that they'd have ANY of CLU's character completely done. Young Flynn in 89 seems to be finished, I can't see anything wrong with him, but CLU appears to be a bit further into the film, so it's natural to assume that there's work still to be done on him.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online

Obviously we'll have to wait and see whats finished and whats incomplete. But for the trailer's sake the shots of CLU talking are completed, fully rendered at IMAX res, everything's good enough for an audience to see. But of course you might be right, theres months left on this project and hundreds of talented artists will be working silly hours to make it look incredible, so I'm hoping theres room for improvement.

There were shots from the Avatar trailer that were changed by the time it hit cinemas...

Also, I'm sure you guys heard that Pixar bosses were screened the latest version and recommended some story changes, which is typical pixar, even if its last minute, making the story stronger is ALWAYS a good thing, perhaps they feel the same way about the vfx?

So I have another little question... to what amount, would you say, are the humans entirely CG? When I see combat with the helmets down, I'm seeing CG characters, Rinzler (I'm guessing this guy is the tron legacy code) seems to be CG the whole time, or not?

After the test footage in '09 i expected all humans to be fully cg with live action faces, which i was terryfied about. But the two trailers we've had so far have a good amount of sets and actors in suits, so pleased about this... So CG for combat and some characters? I cant figure it out.where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online
