VERY HOT HARDDRIVE!

on Friday, July, 02, 2010 5:14 PM
Hey guys... I need to pick your brain for a moment. As a tech myself I've ran across many things, but this one has been bugging me.

I'm currently running an older system that has two hard drives. Both are super hot. I mean I can't even touch them for very long because it feels like it's burning my skin... Do I have a problem? The system is working ok.. I haven't had problems.. but it's gotten my attention...

What type of drives are they Qix77? the only drives that I know or knew at one point were the 10-15K hard drives that would get fairly hot but not too too hot that it would burn your hand at any rate of the imagination. And is there enough ventilation between them within the case that would hinder the airflow for it.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

One is an 80 gig and I think the other is too.. It's an older computer but I think it's just a small porting of the drive.. it's not actually burning my finger but it is too hot to touch.. it's the area around the power plug.. but my hard drive doesn't seem to be acting slow. I was watching an avi of 'Chasing Ghosts' (80's arcade documentary) and everything acted normal.. I keep the cover off because I'm constantly swapping and testing RAM.. I was just concerned about the heat... but I guess since the house hasn't burned down then I guess I'm good.. lol

Hmm interested proposition... Wait was that thought from tron??? LOL It could be anything at this point. The only thing that I can think of off hand here is maybe it is just conducting heat away from the maybe the actuators that swing the heads across the platters maybe. Since the drive motor would be underneath where the exposed circuit board would be laying underneath for the IDE, SCSI or sata drive connectors. Is it an over all hotness across the top part of the case itself like where you have sometimes the labeling and where to switch the master, slave, and cable select on it.

Actually I haven't removied it from it's bays... I've only touched the areas around the IDE cables and the power. I should pull one out and see how it's doing. Lately I've been turning my computer off at night just in cause one decides to go nuclear. I need to pick up some blank DVDs to do some back-ups.... Plus I do need to get a CPU, RAM, and hard drives for the new system I'm building.. All I have now is the motherboard, case and power supply...abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Then that could be okay then. I know for sure that the higher speed drives like the SCSI drives that are running at 10-15K in rpm usually heat up that high due to the motor spinning up that high for the throughput on the reads and writes.

Are the drives the regular 5400-7200 rpm speed on them Qix??? Or are they like the 10-15K in rpm's on them.

Hiya Qix!

I believe that keeping the cover off of the PC could actually be the cause of your problem. Because the cover isn't on, the airflow that would normally keep everything within normal operating temperatures isn't being established, hence the hot HDDs.where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online

You maybe right..... Interesting enough, I the HDDs are still hot but I have not had one single problem. I'm not sure if this is a rare case in my situation or perhaps they are designed to withstand the temperatures they are enduring. Impressive either way.

I'm not too worried at the moment since I'll soon have my new computer built and almost everything I cared to backup is now already on DVD (pictures, programs, music, etc..).
