TRON Evolution Q&A with Darren Hedges

on Wednesday, June, 16, 2010 2:01 PM
Hi everyone,

A couple of days ago I had some questions answered about TRON Evolution by Darren Hedges, game director of Propaganda Games.

Hope you like the answers he has given. My thanks to Eric Wein for making this possible. Enjoy:

Firstly, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedules to answer some questions for TRON-Sector about TRON Evolution.

No worries, we are happy to answer the Q’s of the fans of Tron

How many people on the team were aware of TRON, and was/is any of them fans of the original movie before working on the game?

A lot of the team had already seen Tron (The 1982 film) and knew of its significance before we started on TRON: Evolution. Many of us were also huge fans, myself especially, so that helped immensely when we began to plan for TRON: Evolution.

How closely did you work with the filmmakers of Legacy on the game?

We worked extremely closely with the filmmakers. The film was shot in Vancouver, BC (our city) and we had full access to the sets, scripts, costumes etc. This helped lay the foundations of our story as we closely collaborated with them on the chronology of the universe and consistency of the games story.

You’ve got cast member Olivia Wilde voicing Quorra. Can you reveal as yet if any other cast members will be playing their movie characters in the game?

We do have Olivia Wilde reprising her character Quorra in the game, but unfortunately I can’t yet reveal the rest of the games cast. I can say you won’t be disappointed though..

Could someone watch TRON, play Evolution and the watch Legacy and the whole experience will make sense?

Yes indeed, the whole intent with TRON: Evolution was to continue the storyline of the canon and enhance the mythology. When we started writing the story we worked with the filmmakers to ensure that there are hooks from the game into the movie and vice versa. So after you’ve played the game and go see the movie, you’ll sit there and think “That was me, I did that.. or wow that’s how that character evolves” and conversely for the film to game. We wanted to ensure that the consumer had the most complete experience we could give them within the universe.

For someone who doesn’t know, could you please explain briefly about Evolution and its place within the TRON universe.

Evolution is set in approximately 1989/90 and tells a series of seismic events in the universe. We bridge the two movies, by explaining what happened to Kevin Flynn’s utopian vision of the Tron universe and how it went from that Utopia to the Dystopia you’ll see in the film. So you’ll get to see in more detail why characters in the movie became like they are, and what their motivations where to go that way. I guess the easiest way of explaining the trilogy of Tron would be to say that we are like the middle film of a popular sci-fi film trilogy that was released in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

The game will feature high mobility combat, disc combat and, of course, light cycles as an action/adventure.

Disney is going to be releasing a graphic novel called TRON: The Betrayal, which is also set in between the two movies, in much the same way As Evolution is. Will the GN and the game have anything to do with each other?

I can’t say too much about that storyline (don’t want to spoil the surprise) but we all worked together on the full chronology of the universe so this is not a separate piece, but integrated into the main canon.

Evolution is set in 89 and ties in with Legacy. Are there are portions of the Encom system from 1982 that are going to be seen in the game?

Yes, but I can’t reveal just yet which pieces.

In 2003, Buena Vista Games released TRON 2.0. Is there anything that you’ve taken from the game that will be used in Evolution?

No, we looked at Tron 2.0, before embarking out on Evolution, however 2.0 kind of sits more as an alternate universe piece than in the main canon of TRON.

Is there any kind of online segment to Evolution? If so, can you say much about it yet?

There will be an online segment to TRON: Evolution. The big feature we are talking about at this point in time is the Persistent Player Progression. What this essentially means is that during your story mode you’ll come across areas that will allow you to go online and play in multiplayer matches. Instead of having two characters, one for story mode and one for online. We allow you to take your single character between both modes and level him up as you go. So if you had a level 5 character for example in story mode, then you move from story mode to an online game. Any upgrades, or level gains you have in online will be taken back into your single player story when you return. So you could leave as a level 5 and return as a level 7 for example with a new disc upgrade etc.

We also have multiple online modes and maps, but you’ll need to stay tuned for further details as we release them in the coming months.

Is there anything you can say about Evolution that you can say will change the way games are played?

That is big statement to make, but I think that the fluidity of our High Mobility Combat will be something that others may look at in future titles, and also our Persistent Player Progression across the offline story and online modes, will be the key two areas I think will be looked at as games move forward.

We’re all hoping there will be more TRON games in the future. Are you guys planning ahead for future that may come after Evolution?

We are certainly looking at the full canon and the stories we can tell within that timeline. We really have only just starched the surface so there are still plenty of areas we’d like to go in the future. We hope the game and film are huge successes and offer us numerous opportunities.

There isn’t a great deal you can reveal since the game is still being put together and tested. Can you give TRON-Sector an exclusive and tell us something that hasn’t been previously revealed?

I wish I could at this point, but I’d be spoiling the story for you. We definitely hope to share a lot in the coming months with TRON-Sector as we continue our campaign and get closer to the game and film release.

We’ve got familiar aspects of TRON such as Lightcycles, Tanks, Recognizers and Solar Sailors. Is there anything being developed for the game that doesn’t appear in either movies?

There are a few characters that are exclusively in the game, and the Light Tank is something that you’ll only see and play in the game. We also have a few surprises, but again I’m not going to spoil that for your readers.

Any chance seeing more creatures, like the Grid Bugs from TRON or the Seekers in TRON 2.0?

I can’t comment on that for Evolution

When the game is released and we’ve had a chance to play it, will you someone come back to TRON-Sector and do another Q&A with us? And we can talk about the things we can’t talk about now.

We’d love to..

Good luck with the game. We’re looking forward to getting our hands on it and we hope it is an out and out success.

Thanks, and we are looking forward to seeing the reaction to the game, we hope you guys love it when playing as much as we have whilst making it.

Yeah! Thanks Tronprogram, that was an awesome read.

I'm stoked to see and play the 'Light Tanks'! Let's hope Evolution does well enough that the sequel to Legacy can spawn some more games...

I want to know a little bit more about the differences between the games coming out on multiple platforms (ie Wii, PSP, DS). It'd be sweet if they could tie together the PSP and PS3 games...

I'm surprised you did not ask if Daft Punk did the Evolution soundtrack.

Greetings, Programs:

First, let me apologize to the staff of Tron Sector if the following has already been posted, but it looks COOOOL!!!!!! Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3dHhPmfSpw&feature=related.

There's also somewhat of a spoiler when they show a scene involving Quorra talking to a certain program (look at said program closely). This footage has me reliving my 1982 memories of the first Tron film that blew me away and still do to this very day. December 17th can't come fast enough!!! Enjoy!!!!

Fighting for TRON, The USERS, Both Flynns, Independents, and the mighty ISOs since '82.
