So I decided to kick off the new year right by using a free Windows 7 upgrade disc that came with my computer. Everything's gone smooth so far, but I'm on the step where it says it's "Gathering files, settings, and programs", and it's going so slow that at the current rate of speed it will literally take two more days for it to finish this step. Has something gone wrong?

I think I should also mention that the upgrade program was making no progress at all unless I moved the USB mouse. I have since unplugged said mouse and it has been proceeding at this sluggish pace since then. I mention this because I remember that some time ago, achilles mentioned issues with the XPSP3 installer crashing and we concluded it was the USB mouse. I currently have a USB keyboard plugged in. Could this be causing issues, as well?

EDIT 1: Tried unplugging keyboard abd that (oddly enough) seemed to halt the progress. Plugging it back in fixed it, though. Compucore Wroteon't get me wrong on this tron.dll it is not towards you personally. I have always heard people having problems with the upgrade process where it is acting up like in your situation. And I hope that you have also backed up your important data files as well there too. I know I did try going from windows 3.1 to windows 95 and found it messy and crude and extremely bloated too after finding out was was still left from the upgrade. Nowadays. I usually find the full installation of any OS either linux or windows. And just reformat the hard drive from scratch after backing up the data and the essential files that I need. As well mark down and download the device drivers for for windows 7 as well for it. or for linux if they are not already detected when being installed. Because that is not nrmal at all. I just installed windos 7 on a lenovo thinkcenter 8212-u12 system and it took me with the format about little bit under an hour. Mind you the thing flies when it loads up windos 7.

Now it's at 87 percent (on the same gathering files step), and it's been stalled on 376310/442790 files for an hour.

Is it safe for me to exit out of the upgrade at this point so I can start over with a clean install?

Started the upgrade again. This time, on gathering files, it has a total of 20141 files as opposed to the 400-thousand-something last time. Currently appears to be stalled at 19123/20141 files and says it's only at 18%...

Yeah, there was a "custom" option that, if used, would reformat the drive.

I give up. Vista is better than this POS installation program.
