I've never heard of this. Lame.

I always hated how I'd install SP1 and all the fixes... then the Microsoft Auto-update would say "you need SP2". So I'd download SP2... and then all the fixes and stuff for SP2. And then the multiple fixes upon fixes for SP2 requiring multiple re-boots and more fixes, etc. A vicious cycle. Then once I thought I was done, Microsoft Auto-updater would say, "you need SP3". Umm, why did you just have me go through all of that SP2 nonsense when you could've told me about SP3 from the start? Thanks a bunch.

So, when I had to start my PC over from scratch a few weeks back, I told myself I'd find a way to get straight to SP3 from SP1. And I did. There was a SP3 download that I found on their site which included all the SP2 stuff. Voila. SP1 to SP3 in the blink of an eye. Or at least within 30 minutes or however long it took. Not having to do the SP2 thing shave hours off of my WinXP re-install.

As for SP1, 'tis a shame that issue exists. Someone must have a solution. That's rediculous.

I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^

Here's a page on Microsoft's site, explaining this problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;815319
This could get ugly. There might not be an easy solution. Basically, there's some kind of bug in XP SP1 or earlier in the USB drivers that prevents Windows from completing installation, while certain USB keyboards or mice are hooked up. (Though it could also be some other USB device.)

Of course, how could you install XP if it turns out to be the mouse or keyboard? You might get away with unplugging the mouse, but you've absolutely got to have a keyboard.

Try unplugging any USB devices that aren't essential. Maybe even the mouse, if it's connected by USB. If your keyboard is hooked up by USB, see if you can find/borrow another keyboard.

If none of that helps, then pretty much your only option is to seek out a Windows install disc that has a newer version of XP on it. Either SP2 or SP3. Doing the "slipstreaming" of updates that's mentioned on that page, is a real pain with XP. They didn't make slipstreaming easy until Windows 7.

I've never had a problem finding a connector or whatnot if the case was the usb drivers weren't installed, most usb kb and mouse are shipped with the adapter.

But with the issue of a fix, that's simple, make a ghost of XP SP3, that way it is always ready for installation. 15 minutes or less later, you'll be ready to supply mainboard and hardware drivers on the machine, w/ no major issues. where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

I don't know if this helps if the windows install was fully locked, but I have seen USBs go bad. Did you try the PS/2 adapter for kb/mouse? Usually a lockup indicates a hardware problem such as the mobo, ram, or vcard.

What is always handy is the good old usb to ps2 connections when it comes to something like this I always keep spares around here for those usb keyboards and mouses. Or just plug in a second hand mouse and keyboard that are still in the ps2 format and voila your still in business for it. I go to recycling centers that have and sell mouses and keyboards that are still in ps2 and are optical.

I think I may have a supplier up here that has those flexible keyboards that you can roll up and tuck away over here.

If it really is that USB keyboard issue that's holding up your install of XP, then you could always go to Staples and buy an MS keyboard that's got a PS/2 connector - assuming you don't have a USB to PS/2 adapter lying around somewhere, and assuming your PC has a PS/2 keyboard port - and try again.

so half the capacitors on the motherboard were blown - which im finding out was a major issue with dell motherboards manufactured around that time period (02-03). the system is still able to pass diagnostics even when this occurs. found a refurbed board online for $30 but then...

...i ended up bending some pins during the first attempted processor swap out because the chip was fused to the heatsink and rather than try and pry it off i attempted to place it in the new board all as one piece. tragic fail. the pin that broke is on one of the outer rows though so my bro is confident he can surgically reattach it. i will let you all know how it goes.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Wow, I'm amazed the computer would even pass its POST with blown capacitors on the motherboard, let alone allow you install Windows.

Sorry to hear about the problem with the processor now, too. Hopefully, if it can't be fixed, you can find a cheap replacement.

well i might be misspeaking when i say they were all "blown" - from what i read they can be "blown", leaking, corroded and i dont know the difference - and maybe different problems have different effects - but they looked bad. after a few headache inducing nights of dealing with dell tech support i finally got on with a guy who apparently knew his stuff - he gave me the idea to look at the capacitors because it was the only other thing he could think was a possibility given that the machine was still able to boot and run (and pass) diagnostic routines. killing me that i went through all that only to damage the processor itself. hard lesson learned. today im going to look up the docs on the chip though - if i luck out and that broken pin is one not used by the system there is a possibility it could still function.
