Quantum of Solace game

on Sunday, December, 14, 2008 2:52 AM
So I just tried out the new James Bond game on the Wii. IGN gave it (the Wii version specifically) a 4 out of 10 because of really bad framerates, sloppy AI, and extremely poor IR detection. Here's my two cents:

I experienced an extremely low framerate once throughout the entire single player campaign, never experienced poor IR detection/motion detection, and the AI I can't really comment on because I was playing on the easiest difficulty.

The game runs on the Call of Duty 4 game engine, and it runs like a charm on the Wii, contrary to what I assume IGN and developer Infinity Ward think (basically, I believe CoD4 could be successfully ported to the Wii).

I really liked the cover and lock-on systems, as they provided for some pretty cool camera movements that added to the intensity in the current situation. The camera switches to 3rd person when you go into cover (and you can use just about anything for cover), so you can see Daniel Craig with a gun. You can also sneak up behind enemies and go into a cinematic melee sequence in which you must point at a circle on-screen and press the A button. Then Daniel Craig beats the crap outta the enemy in 1 of 4 different animations (including one where he breaks the guy's arm). This game is pretty good looking for a Wii game at points, and the gameplay really shines at a lot of points, especially missions where stealth is a requirement or option. It really feels rewarding when you have the option to be stealth, and take down an enemy or bypass a security camera, and make the level easier by doing so. There's also an online multiplayer mode, which, unlike the single player game (which generally runs at 30-35 FPS), runs at 60 FPS all the time. There's two modes in multiplayer, a standard deathmatch mode, and a mode where you are given objectives such as "Assemble the Golden Gun", "Capture the Intelligence" or "Hack the Computer". Both modes have teamplay and battle royal gameplay. All multiplayer game modes are also class based, but it really doesn't make that much of a difference considering that you can pick up other class's weapons.

Unfortunately, there are some low points, too, that were not explained in IGN's review. The sound on CD video cutscenes is much quieter than the sound level on actual gameplay. It can be pretty annoying if you're the kind of person who wants to hear everything. This could've been easily solved by subtitles, but there aren't any in this game.

Of all of the little annoyances in this game, only one thing really bugged me:

The game is called Quantum of Solace.
The single player mode is even called the "Quantum of Solace Campaign"

Why does this bug me? A majority of levels are part of a flashback to the Casino Royale movie. In fact, I think only the first and second levels are based on Quantum of Solace. After the second level, you're suddenly at the beginning of last year's Casino Royale, chasing that guy through a construction site in Madagascar. It's not that it's not fun, but more so, it doesn't fit in with the title of the game when you're paying through the Casino Rayale movie instead of the movie the game is supposedly based on. In fact, the level that was shown at E3 was the first part of the level that takes place within the Casino Royale (there's a part later where you're poisoned, and you've gotta get to the Aston Martin amidst all of these cool looking visual effects).

If you're considering buying the Wii version of this game, I'd say you should rent it first, mainly to see how you like multiplayer, which is probably what you'd be doing after you beat the single player campaign. If you're thinking about getting the game because you're like me, and saw Casino Royale and not Quantum, and you want to see what it's like, you'll be severely disappointed, as Activision did not even include the Quantum of Solace theme song, even though they managed to license it for use within Guitar Hero. A lot of stuff in the game seemed a bit too militaristic for a James Bond game, with people yelling "Hold this position" and so on.

OVERALL SCORE: 7/10

Some poor scriptwriting and voice acting at some points, along with a majority of the game's content not even being based on Quantum of Solace brings my score down a bit, but the core gameplay is still fun enough for me. However, those of you who have played Call of Duty 4 may just see it as a lame copy with a different name.

Sidenote: Wasn't the one thing that ever made James Bond games unique the inclusion of gadgets? Those are also MIA, but probably because they are in the movie, too (a cellphone does not count as a gadget, even if it can provide a live feed of enemy movements and update your objectives).where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online
