Game Ideas

on Thursday, November, 27, 2008 12:15 PM
Hi, I'm new to this site (just discovered it a few days ago) and signed up just today. I've been toying around for about 35 years with the coolest idea for a Tron-inspired 3D game. (Why so long? House, kids, wife, other projects, job, etc. And, the technology has finally been developed and become affordable to do the kind of game I've wanted to make since I was a teen.)

I've got the basic concept of the game down (had a lot of time to think about it), but there are still a few details I've yet to get a good idea for. So, I'm welcome to suggestions by fellow Tron fans and gamers. Maybe you'll have an idea I'm interested in, maybe you won't, maybe you'll inspire an idea of my own. I'd like to hear all.

Here's the thing that I've haven't had any decent idea for yet. Say you're a Tron character either in a lightcycle or on foot outside the game grid in the mazes and you want to "borrow" (he-he) a tank or a recognizer. As a game player, what would be a good way to do this? Getting out of the lightcycle is easy enough - set up a button on the controller for derezzing the cycle (you'll still have the handlebar object in your portfolio for rezzing it up again later if you need it). But how to get into a tank or recognizer? Find a derelict in the game, as Flynn did? How to transistion from a game character on foot to piloting the stolen (I mean, "borrowed") tank or recognizer?

I welcome your ideas. Thanks.

First I want to say Welcome to Tron-Sector

I think they need a MMORPG.We need a Game Grid.

Okay, excuse my unfamiliarity with the acronymns, but what's a MMORPG? My game does indeed start on the Game Grid (you begin as your everyday cyber conscript) with various games and some hidden "easter eggs" that will enable you (provide certain pre-requisites are met) to break out from the grid to acquire your mission and complete it to win the game. Hence the need for a slick way to gain access to tanks and recognizers for enhanced gameplay. (I plan for some tasks to actually require you to "borrow" one of these vehicles to move on to the next challenge.)

A MMORPG Is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game.

Kinda like Final Fantasy or World of Warcraft you play It online.Best Idea I can think to explain It.

Yeah though It sounds like you are on that path.Well at least In my head A FPS (First Person Shooter) like Tron 2.0 could work as well though.

Although (My game does indeed start on the Game Grid (you begin as your everyday cyber conscript) That sounds like a MMORPG Game & I welcome It lol

What about something similar to like tron where the maps are on the servers that can be downloaded during the game Or when you need to get them and can be played on Mac OSX, Windows, and Linux.

2 Legit 2 quit

End of line

Compucore

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Like most fan-based games out there, this one will be for personal gratification. With all the copyright and licensing issues, even distributing the game as freeware might be frowned upon by the likes of Encom shareholders. I have several pc's but no Mac and no Linux. If I find the time to develop the game, it would be pc-based.

I've thought about multi-player options, but frankly I don't know how difficult (or easy) it is to do with network protocols, firewalls, and technical stuff. (I'm a programming engineer for a major microchip company, but not a network specialist.) The concept I have is more arcade-plot orientated rather than virtual-reality multi-player orientated. The idea behind Tron was man against the machine, and that concept will be maintained in this game. It's also not a FPS. I really like the lightcycle Game Grid Champions (it's a shame the project never got finished), but the graphic quality and AI quality leave a bit to be desired. The game style will be third-person 3D and not likely (but not impossibly) multi-player.

I have Tron 2.0 but alas it's still in the box not even installed yet. I've been reading about these "map" things people put online for download but I think that's beyond the scope of my concept idea. A successful program is one that is new, reliable, affordable, and way cool. I've seen a lot of Tron games and none are what I've got in my head. (There are several games that maybe represent one small aspect of this program, but each of them always have something missing - graphic quality, or control awkwardness, or lack of a comprehensive audio track, or continuity issues, or something. Besides, as mentioned, this game would be something to appease a hard-nosed critical "wish-this-existed" Tron fan, and if it ended up in the hands of others (free) and they like too, well that ain't bad either.

Anyways, this thread has gone way off topic. The whole plot and style of the game have already been worked out. I was originally just seeking suggestions for what game players would consider a novel/cool/playable/practical/realistic way of how a conscript on foot might go about acquiring a tank or recognizer. The recognizer is a little easier than a tank - I could simply hide a "junkyard" somewhere in the maze outside the game grid and if a player was lucky enough to find it they could simply hijack one as Flynn did (after juicing up, of course, in one of a few skillfully placed power-pools).

Getting into a tank is a little trickier because they're nearly always occupied and on the lookout for escaped conscripts like the gamer. (You don't exactly just "find one" parked with the door hanging open at Sark's tupperware party.)

So, back to the question: If you were running on foot outside the game grid, or riding around in your lightcycle, and wanted/needed to get into a tank for advancing to the next misson chaper, what do you think would be a good way to do that? Thanks.

Ok now I see It.It's a 3rd Person action game.I think the Tanks could be as easy as the Recognizers, but I'm not a computer genius.Don't know how hard It would be for you to pull It off.

The Tanks would be mobile.Sneaking up from the Tanks field of vision.Either from the sides or from behind.Just not In view of the cannon. After doing that climb up & climb inside.Showing a animation of yourself throwing out the driver.
Kinda reminds me of this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS25ub3BCNo

Just more simple of course lol Then a animation of the user throwing out the driver.

For the Recognizer yeah I think you got about the right Idea.

Hope my Input helped a bit this time.I couldn't see the full picture of It I think till now.

Yeah, stewing in the back of my mind over this last week I too had the idea of having the player jump onto the back of the tank and climb inside. Couldn't quite get past "what to do about the pilots inside" issue. I like the comic aspect of seeing them tossed out and derezzing moments after entering the tank. (It aligns well with some other jokes I planned to include, such as randomly placed graffiti in the mazes, such as "Tron was here", and "don't look behind you, immenent Microsoft crash approaching", etc. Tossing out the tank drivers is a good idea. I'll need to do something like allowing it only when your energy level is above a particular rating so it's realistic.

May I suggest you read into David1's Tron2.0 the continuation, where there is material suitable (maybe w/kudos) to - or above expectations of descriptiveness for game material?

In the sequence where Jet leaves a tank w/ a modified lightcycle, the exit's in the rear through a loading ramp.

If you look at the size ratios, (maybe MMMMWMMMM or Ed Keefe can help with the ratios) there's a scale that works well for the models from the art made by some of the fans whom describe a rule, although you'd have to find the material in other sectors of the forum... if you need any help w/ the links, I may be able to help w/ your topic.

Just watched the clip - too much cinema and not enough game. And if a tank barrel really sliced though the player (poor polygon tracking), I doubt they'd still be running around throwing grenades.

Thanks for the brute force toss 'em out idea. Quite simple and probably why it eluded my runaway multitasking processor upstairs.

If you've ever played the Toy Story 2 Action Game (Buzz Lightyear) then you've got a good idea how I'd set up this program, only with a Tron theme and better rendering. (Graphics capability have improved since that game was released, but it's still a fun game to play. And if a game isn't fun, then why play it?)

I have video of Tron 2.0, the tank action is let's say tedious at best, I'll upload a video for you to get the concept here...

I come from the old Atari / Commodore64 computer days (yeah, that's how long I've been programming). It was a cool thing when a joystick came out that had two buttons on it instead of one. The game controllers today have more buttons on them than I can remember to press while playing, especially in fast-action games. (My 4 yr old does better with the controls than me!) This all means that I'll be keeping the game simple so a player can focus on playing the game rather than trying to remember what button does what. Now this doesn't mean all the buttons won't be coded. Of course they will, but you won't NEED to use all of them.

(I wonder why the notify feature here isn't working for me.)
