Old PC Games

on Saturday, November, 22, 2008 5:10 PM
Ok.. so I'm starting this thread to prevent me posting a new thread every time one of us tries to get an old PC game to work.

We all are aware that 'compatibility mode' in XP is a good option to try first but it doesn't always work... so... perhaps this thread will grow with a list of games and instructions on how to get the old classics to work again.

For DOS games, try DOSbox. It's a really good emulator with a small learning curve. If you still have your old DOS games and you want to play them on a new computer, then DOSbox is the way to go. Here is a link... http://www.dosbox.com/
Keep in mind newer versions of DirectX and some new video card drivers can cause issues when playing an older game or prevent it to run all together.

Ok.. with all that said (and leaving out a lot of stuff too) I'm going to try and list some old games that I'll be trying in a few days to see if I can get them to run.

For Linux users (either members or lurkers) try WINE for Windows games. You can also use DOSbox in Linux also. Here is a link... http://www.winehq.org/
.... next game.... "Metal Gear Solid"

Excluding your game executable from Data Execution Prevention is very often the only way you'll be able to play an old Windows game, and sometimes even brand-new Windows games need to be excluded.

As for DOS games, I have found that excluding the DOSBox executable from DEP is a good idea.

For security, I recommend keeping DEP enabled for all programs and services except for the ones you explicitly exclude.

Qixx I think under linux in general there is a dos emulator that will do the trick there. I remember seeing somewhere under the add/remove section under ubuntu 8.04 and I think some earlier versions of ubuntu where you can install and run programs that are strictly DOS based appliations.

I'm somewhat misunderstanding the topic of this thread. This type of context is what we should post here, right?

Who Want's to be a Millionaire First Edition.

More of a silly cash-in than something to be taken seriously (you really can't port that show to a game), but all of the show's original music and atmosphere is there, which is pretty cool, and why I played it way too much when I first got it. Unfortunately, when I upgraded my older PC to XP, I installed the game, and had the strangest problem. You see, the music, which was essentially the best part of the game (or the show for that matter, lol) wouldn't work at all. I had tried running it in all the XP compatibility modes, but alas, no luck. The music was the only reason I played that game, and it not working is pretty depressing. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Please note that the aforementioned statement does not concern me any longer. It is merely an example.

Ok... Basically, this is just a thread for anyone who has an older PC game that doesn't seem to work properly on current versions of Windows.

... so to all questions I've read wanting to know what the hell this thread is all about.. lol... you guys got the right idea.. But just for sh*ts and giggles, here is an example.

Example: Help Request 1
Twinsen's Odyssey: (a.k.a. LBA 2)
Having problems running on XP in Service Pack 3. Won't install and pops up an error saying that it can not install on a Windows NT system.

Used compatibility mode for Win 98 and was able to install.

Game is installed but crashes on menu screen. Help!!!

Example: Solution from another user 1

Did some research and Twinsen's Odyssey will not run in newer versions of DirectX above DirectX 7. However, I have found an 'unofficial' patch to the game here. http://forum.magicball.net/showthread.php?p=367361#post367361 I tried it and it and the game works perfect.

So, it's pretty much a thread for old games that someone has trouble running in Windows XP or Vista. The main reason for this thread is so that once someone has requested for help on running a game, and a solution was found, then it is archived here for future references.

I should set up some guidelines... but all I'll say is that this isn't a thread for new games that someone is having problems running on their computer. Say that GTA 4 is released for the PC and someone is having problems running the game, then that should belong in a new thread.... but this is subject to change once the game has aged and a new version of Windows is released that won't run GTA 4.

I hope this post makes sense. If you would like a better example, look at the thread I posted titled "Thief - I, II, III" or just click on this link. http://www.tron-sector.com/forums/default.aspx?do=top&id=367035

I love dosbox so very very very much.

Also, there's Gametap that'll let you play old games without needing a dosbox, but of course that's a subscription based system.

They're supposed to have "compatiablity" modes that let you play the games.

At least, XP does. However, I haven't had any problems playing 98 or 95 games on my machine. (Also, lulzy, 95 programs still work on XP)order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

Vista has this as well for older applications too when you right click and go into the properties too. I had some problems with certain applications not working right under Vista and went into either windows 2000 pro or 98 for it to work.. I know linux does not have this feature for their applications Mind you getting the missing pieces that it needs is not too big of a deal.

But sometimes the compatibility mode won't work or it only does a half ass job. Sometimes it's conflicts with DriectX drivers, sometimes it's newer gfx drivers conflicting with the game. Sometimes it's just that the game itself is so confused or has problem accessing a library that it just crashes. There are a lot of games that do work with compat mode, but not all. Most of my library of games don't. I was trying to play "Final Fantasy XIII" about a month ago and it would crash after the movie sequence.

There are tricks around this... so thats why I think this thread is needed. Sometimes it's a simple patch, and sometimes it's independent software someone made cause they suffered the same issue.

I still think that something like 'WINE' for Windows is needed.

I've been loading cargo all damn day today and I'm sore and tired. Since I'm not doing anything the rest of this week, I'm drinking my butt off tonight and I'm going to get all the stuff that TronFAQ suggested for Thief to work. I might be spending more time just looking for ways of getting these 9x games to run is compat mode fails and if so, I'll sort of list the tricks that helped me here and hope it helps anyone else lurking about.

BTW: Anyone running a Geforce FX here? My computer keeps crashing when I update the drivers that Nvidia suggests for it. Just wondering if you guys are experiencing the same issues.

Dare I say this Qixxx and I mean this in the best way possible even on older games.Just hack it to death adn find out way. Like I said in the best way possible and for fun to learn it. Like Linux Intriped from ubuntu linux. I got it yesterday and I was in all over the place making modifications everywhere to get certain thing working right so I can get the full graphics working for my ati radeon 16 meg video card to work on my laptop. Now I love it and a few other things too. But similar to what you may need to do with the game for dos.

I used them for a very long time. If you uninstall the motherboard drivers, and the video drivers, then reinstall in that order, does it still crash?

If so, does the error reporting in the admin tools gererate a error code? that's the second thing I'd look at.

The bios may need to be updated also.

the board could be old and unstable also..

If you list the driver version you're using and the board/vcard it may make this easier if that fails.

I don't have an on-board GFX chip and I hadn't had this problem before I reinstalled Windows. However, I didn't run the latest driver either. The one I'm using is from December 2007 and it works fine. Just the current driver from N'vidia is giving me issues. Could be an error in the new driver for FX users. Not really a problem though. I'll be building me a new computer by late spring and turning this one into an arcade machine (after a minor upgrade).

But, just for giggles...

It's an old Asus motherboard (X-series) with an AMD Athlon 2800+. Been a great little bugger ever since I've had it. My card is an Asus 5980 ULTRA (Geforce FX 5950 Ultra) AGP. Never had problems with for the last five years, but just won't take with the current driver from N'vidia.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok... so I got "Thief Gold" to work. I'll post what TronFAQ posted on another thread. However for this to work do NOT use the Win 9x compatibility mode for 'TheifG.exe' The patch will fix all the issues but make sure you read the 'ReadMe' file. I was able to turn it off, but TronFAQ mentioned it worked best for him in Win 2k mode. Read below.

TronFAQ Wrote:

Yep, I've played Thief 1 and 2. Both amazing, awesome games. I'm ashamed to say, though, that I didn't get around to playing them until earlier this year. I knew everyone praised the Thief series as being fantastic, but it was the medieval setting that kept me from playing them until now. I'm not really into medieval, fantasy games.

Thief 3, I'm maybe 1/3 of the way through it. I started playing it immediately after I finished 1, 2, and the T2X fan expansion. But it's just not the same, and I've played it sparingly since. Doesn't hold a candle to the first two. It looks and plays like an Xbox game . . . it suffered from being a bad port. I actually like it even less than Deus Ex: Invisible War (aka Deus Ex 2), and I didn't think that was possible. Thief 3 makes DX2 look good by comparison.

There are a bunch of patches and mods for the Thief games, to make them run well on XP and Vista and the newer graphics cards.

Thief 1
Thief 1 Patch - Only meant for the original release of Thief 1, if you have Thief Gold then don't use it
DDFix - Makes the game run better on newer graphics cards and dual or quad core processors
Widescreen PatchThief 1 AI Mesh and Skin patch - Upgrades the character models to have better quality
Thief Enhancement Pack - Updates some of the models and textures
Thief 1 Sound Enhancement Pack

Thief 2
Thief 2 PatchMission 2 Fix - Fixes a problem with the second mission in the game
Mission 11 Fix - Fixes a problem with the eleventh mission in the game
DDFix - Makes the game run better on newer graphics cards and dual or quad core processors
Widescreen PatchThief Enhancement Pack - Updates some of the models and textures
NTEX - Big upgrade to the quality of the textures in the game
Thief 2 Sound Enhancement PackT2X - Fantastic, high quality single player expansion for Thief 2

Thief 3
Thief 3 PatchDEF - Fixes Thief 3 to work on dual or quad core processors
JohnP Texture Pack - Upgrades the textures in the game to higher quality
Minimalist Project - Changes the gaudy Xbox-style user interface to be more like the original Thief games
Widescreen Patch
For the patches/mods for each game, I listed them in the order you should install them. Installing them in the wrong order can cause problems. You'll notice that some of the patches work on both Thief 1 and 2, so no need to download those twice.

For Thief 1 and 2, you might need to add the line safe_texture_manager to the end of the user.cfg file. And you need to run them in Administrator mode, or else they'll crash. You might need to install the Indeo codec as well, for the cutscene videos.

For Thief 1 and 2, you might also need to use the Compatibility Mode feature Tim.H talked about. I had to set Thief 1 to Windows 2000 mode to get it to work 100% properly.

For Thief 3, you may need to turn off DEP on XP if you have it turned on. On Vista, DEP is always on by default so it has to be turned off in order to get Thief 3 to work. If you don't know what DEP is, visit this page to find out what I mean.

The essential part is the DDfix. I used the GUI version and it works great. I was able to get 'Street Fighter Alpha 2' to run in XP by only using the 'compatibility mode' and setting it for Win98. I should develop a list of games that work this way with my current PC configuration.

I've ran across this same thing with some of my disks. I hate to say it, but a no-cd crack comes in handy since it skipps the cd check.

Of course, I don't promote cracking games or anything... but when you own a game and you run across an issue like that then I can see it being justified.
