Last night, something happened. All my root directories that start with '#' thru 'Dn' went missing. Somehow it deleted itself. I don't suspect a virus (and I haven't checked Ubuntu installed on the same HD) but I think I might have some bad sectors.
I'm currently doing an Exodus (major backup) to DVDs. I'm also havening major problems with Nero 7. I have so much crap to back up and I'm hurting here.
Wish me luck.
BTW: If any of you guys have a slightest clue what might be happening on my end, let me know.where to buy abortion pill http://blog.bitimpulse.com/template/default.aspx?abortion-types buy abortion pill online

Page file.. perhaps? if you have a page file, where you or the system put the pagefile, could impact what's loaded in.. so whether it's bad RAM, bad HDD, not enough space on the drive, will determine the cause. if you're using just onboard ram with no system managed page file it could be the RAM, or HDD.
If you have bad sectors, I recall a program that detects them and rewrites around them, but the media will still go bad on it eventually..

I sure hope it's not my RAM.
Onlything I can think of what I did last night was cleaning out 'old compressed' files. Said there was about 3 gigs of crap to remove so I let it run but it was taking forever so I canceled it..
Ok.. so I tried to reinstall CCleaner under C:\ccleaner and it works... but when I reboot the computer the directory is missing and the Icon on the desktop is blank and can't find the folder...
After backing up everything, I'm going to just format the drive and reinstall Windows..

Your FAT might have gotten corrupt somehow. You might want to look in to GetDataBack. This is the software I used to recover my data after my one hard drive bit the dust in '06. It recovered about 90% of the data. The cool thing about this software is you can try it for free to see if it will be of any use to you. It will tell you what data (if any) it can recover for you. Then if you want to actually retrieve the data, you'll have to lay down $80. High price for something that won't get used often, but you have to decide what your data is worth. Again - you only have to purchase it if you want to retrieve the data. Looking for retrievable data is absolutely free. Pretty easy to use too.
Good luck with your computer troubles. For what it's worth - we've ALL been there before, and will be again. It's just a crappy fact of digital-life.

I know with ubuntu linux or any version of linux the swap area is on a seperate partition altogether on a linux or a unix system to make it easier for the computer to work with. SO that any working fies they a user would use would not be deleted on the swap partition. Ubuntu and most unix and linux operating system are very particular on this and they do clean up very efficiently on this. I know for a fact one this since my slowest linux box does a clean up on the swap and temp files on a daily basis. And a defrag is done in the background on its own when you do not notice it at all.
It could be a corrupt file that might have gone bad on ubuntu. Bit you would have to see the error message in order to find out which file it is. If it is the lilo loader there you might need to gedit the cmain config file as root and see if it is that.
Qixx are you still getting into xwindow system of GNOME, KDE or XCFE? Or is it just the command line itself from ubuntu?
TheReelTodd - If that is the case where Qixx is using windows XP Pro he would have NTFS installed on his windows partition. Ubuntu, kubuntu, XCFE, red hat etc uses ext3 another form of file extension that is linux secured. Just to bring you up to speed for the linux side and a A+ for the effort. He could use fdisk on a bootable floppy and do a fdisk /MBR to take a backup of the master boot record and et it back up. Since there is a second hidden one that is there in the background.
But backup first before doing anything drastic as for using fdisk /mbr since we don't need you to loose your precious data.

It's in XP... It took me about 16 hours but I got everything backed up now (cross fingers for correct CRC)...
I'm going to run a system check, and then I'm just going to format and reinstall XP. It's good that I do anyways cause the voices in my head told me so.
I'm also going to smoke a cigarette.
I'll most likely be bitching about something tomorrow when all of this is done cause it'll help relax me when I give myself a lobotomy for losing all my raw data for my "Jody's Retro Game Reviews" and such. I know I have it all backed up, but something is going to go wrong...
Then I'll have some ice cream.
Get this... Device Manager thinks that I have PCMICA devices installed. Ha.. those crazy old laptop bus ports (I'm using a desktop BTW). Hey... It wouldn't hurt to have some heavily armed PCMICAs on my side for a change.
I need to buy beer... and a taco...
Is it just me or am I suffering from coffee intoxication?
OMG!!! IT'S ROBERT FROST!!!

That is a long time to back up in windows for data alone. Even on a dvd instead of tape back up. Let us know how it goes with the installation of your windows partitions. I am hoping that I will be getting that precision 530 this coming weekend. When I was going to meet up with my high school protegy it was for the system last weekend He got called into work to help out. Man I hope i can get that system soon it would be so sweet to have.

Impossible!!! There is no such state of being as 'too much coffee'. You must mean 'not enough coffee', because that state of being can induce mental instabilities which would explain your erroneous statement. "We are, after all, not God." - Cmdr. J. J. I can... I can drink about four cups of coffee per hour if I don't watch it. If I'm not drinking coffee, I'm drinking beer... and if not beer then it's Dr. Pepper or Coke... btw... I tried snorting Coke but the ice cubes got stuck up my nose (lol.. old lame joke.. ).. :P
I'm the same way with tacos (not fast food trash). If I'm not eating a taco, then I'm eating my world famous 'Jody Craig Football Sandwich'... and I have to have one every time the Colts or the Titans are playing..
oooooo.... and I love egg and cheese biscuits from McDonald's. It's the only time I'll go to a fast food restaurant.... ok.. that's a lie... Perhaps once every two or three months I'll get a double cheese burger from Burger King... but understand that I really really don't like eating fast food.
..... ok... so.... how the hell did I get on this subject? OMG.. I'm so freaking hungry... hmmm... but I do need to make some coffee...
Ok... about the XP situation.... This is all the apps I need on my computer for me to be somewhat happy.
Installed Appz:
Paint Shop Pro X
Sony Sound Forge (just bought it yesterday).
WinRar
WinZip
TrueSpace 3
ModPlug Player
ModPlug Tracker
WinAmp
Nero 7 Premium
PowerISO
Firefox and Thunderbird
Avira Anti Virus
CCleaner
Going to install next:
Cakewalk Sonar 5 (I haven't really used this much since I got it).
Cakewalk Pro Audio 8 (oldie but goodie)
Vegas Pro 8
Lots of other video/sound apps
Multimedia Fusion 2
GIMP for Windows
WinACE
DosBox
Better Beer Brewing (data base for home brew recipes)
There is much more but I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
As for Ubuntu... everything is fine there. I'll be logging back into it after I get some egg and cheese biscuits from McDonald's... :P
