Steam Sucks

on Thursday, June, 28, 2007 5:03 PM
I said it so many times before, and now everything I said a few years ago has came true.

Today I installed my old copy of Half-Life 2 and I had to download a new version of steam. Ok, no prob, but then the game wont play because even though I installed it on this computer before, I had to format the HD and now it thinks it a stolen copy. Not only that, but because of Steam, I can't download the upgrades.

See, Steam is a joke and it does promote piracy to a certain degree. Even though I own HL2, I have to download a cracked version of it from a torrent site so that the Steam crap is detached. I shouldn't have to do this, but I have no other choice because Steam isn't going to let me play a game I paid for. I've also ran across this problem with DEFCON.

I'm so upset I'm just about to start a boycott Steam campane not just to stop those losers, but to prevent other companies from ripping people off by using either Steam or a similar method.

What is so wrong with me just installing a game without it trying to access a crap online program? What if I bought a game and no longer hooked up to an ISP? This is one of many stupid moronic decisions that game dev companies have came up with that is hurting PC gaming.

Ok... sorry... I'm just upset over this. I always get this way when I'm being ripped off.

I agree. Steam is terrible. I had the original half life installed on a computer a while ago. Years past, the computer broke and i eventually forgot about it. Then, A few months ago I thought I might play Team Fortress Classic again. Started it up, used the exact same ID and password, It said now that I had to reinstall the games. Did so, then entered the registration keyes. (As you can tell, after years i keep my passwords and registry keyes ) Then, terribleness happened. Steam said that it has already been activated. Okay. Now i was pissed off. Contacted Sierra or Valve or whoever runs that, and they gave me another cd key; after I had shipped my receipt and game to them. (see organization again!) Well, that was all a hassle. Then I realized I disliked Team Fortress Classic. Steam SUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS. Half-life doesn't.

Whoa - sounds like you had to do a few laps JUST to kick back and enjoy some good gaming. I bet after all that crap you had to go through, you weren't much in a good mood. Sorry, man.

I know how that feels. I don't have anything Steam puts out, but we've all had those kinds of idiotic aggressive piracy prevention hoops to jump through.

Don't you miss the simpler days of just buying a game and playing it, period? Back in a simpler time when you could buy something without having to register it online or subscribe to something or re-register it every time you did this or that?

Norton Internet Security 2005 did something similar to me. There was a glitch in the program and it kept requiring me to enter the registration key and register it every other week or so. Eventually it deactivated itself permanently and I could no longer use it because it "had been installed too many times". It was only installed ONCE but having to reactivate it every time told the Symantec servers otherwise. I called their help support which offered to refund my recent subscription renewal BUT NO offer of help to resolve the problem. In fact they wanted to charge me $30.00 to talk to a tech support guy who might be able to resolve the problem. Long story short, I don't use Symantec internet security products anymore.

Piracy sucks but when companies resort to aggressive anti-piracy methods like that, I avoid their products if at all possible. Unfortunately, it is becoming less and less possible.

Qix77-- you can disable Steam... not sure how, I'll have to ask Silver to post the instructions here or at least have him give me the instructions.

This is supposed to be a legit way to disable Steam so you can play HL without any problems... not sure why they came up with Steam other than "we must fight piracy". :/

See... How do these jokers expect us to buy their games if they keep pulling this crap on us? I soooooooooooo love PC games, but I am not going to invest in crap like this again unless I can either get a lifetime guarantee or a crack. I'm not rich. It really takes a lot for me to buy a game.... a freaking GAME...

... and I love HL so much... It's such an impressive game.

Boycott STEAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And it sucks... I know what you mean. It's a shame that we shuck out $40+ for something that we can only either play once on a computer or not-at-all.

It doesn't only make me mad that I experience it, but it makes me even madder that my friends have to suffer this as well.

I so hate Piracy, and I so hate to have to acquire a game this way but since I own it, I have rights... but it's just I hate to have to go underground.... It's not as innocent like it was back in the C64/Amiga days.

Note: To anyone reading this, I do not and will NEVER support piracy. NEVER EVER EVER... I will not tell you anything so don't ask.

Note: Same goes for Todd.

Note: Eat Tacos from a real Mexican restaurant and stop buy that nasty Taco Bell crap.

Note: All Your Base Are Belong To Qix... Well.. some belongs to Todd.. I'll share.. lol

Here you go, Qix!

Silver found the thread just now and it should be able to help you out.

I think some companies are going a little overboard fighting piracy when they lock their own users out of the legal content that they bought themselves.

Well, I can take comfort that I didn't like Half-Life 2 so I don't have to play that again, but sadly ALL Source games HAVE to have Steam, which creates problems for the other Source games I own

Also, this is wildly off topic, but who is this Silver you keep referring to?order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

I really hate Steam, takes ages to install games because you have to download and unlock half of the game files which can take up to an hour. I uninstalled it and everything to do with it because I hated Steam that much. But I went and bought Lost Planet for the PC a few days ago which my god the graphics are outstanding and I am only able to run it on DirectX9c medium settings (I say this because I have a 4.6 GIG Dual Core AMD and I can usually run games on Max settings). There is a DirectX10 version that comes with the game which I need to see bad lol. But the mega downside is that you MUST use steam.

I hate it, I have Vista Ultimate Edition and my pc used to take less than 1 min to start from a cold boot up. Now it takes a good few mins all thanks to Steam. I eats up the pc resources 11k worth of memory! thats the second highest memory usage top being my side bar just because I have NASA TV running constantly on it even then it only beats it by 1k.

Steam is a joke, actually its a money making scheme seeing as you can buy and download games direct. Its bad enough that us PC users are often fighting against hard drive space and system requirements, we do not need another program to mess up our already iffy gaming experiance.

I say iffy because you know what its like when you dont have that MS certified driver and the game takes a hissy fit and you find out you have to format you PC to get it to install only for it to tell you that it is missing that driver which it had a problem with in the first place.

I'd delete steam again if I didnt love Lost Planet so much.
