I could not get that to happen. The closest I came was to accessing my "expressions" and changing the smileys to a new set... but a set defined by AOL. When I did that and searched my hard drive for changed files it found nothing.
So my guess is that the preference is stored on their server somewhere and you can only change to some graphic set existing on their server already.
However, I did manage to change the *incoming* smileys from someone I have on my buddy list who uses Trillian.
Go to this directory:
C:\Program Files\AIM6\services\aimToolkit\ver6_0_28_1\resources\en-US
And you'll see a set of smileys. My guess is that the application stores incoming smileys from other applications here. When I changed the : and ) to the Tron guy from this site and she sent the smiley, it actually was a Tron guy.
That's as close as you come, I think.
