Graffics Effect question

on Monday, November, 20, 2006 4:24 PM
Hi. When I first played Tron 2.0 on my computer, I had an ATI Radeon 9600 pro. I found a shader effect called 'stylized black & white'. This effect seemed to be made for tron. Some of the colors are washed out and it really looks like the movie, IMHO.
My question is this: Now that I have an NVidia 6800 GT, I was wondering how I can get that effect again. I can't get myself to play without that effect. I was too taken with it.

That feature is exclusive to ATI cards. There's no way that I know of, to do it on nVidia cards.

I honestly don't see the value of the feature, anyway. Who wants to play their game in black and white, hazy, sepia-toned, etc.? Tron 2.0 would be an exception - it's already a highly stylized game, so playing with an additional shader effect can produce interesting results.

I play on a Nvidia graphics card. i get an effect called the "Nvidia glow" or something like that. i've compared playing with it on and off, it makes a big difference to the brightness [or at least, it does for me.]
I can't help but imagine what tron 2.0 would be like with some HDR in there.

i think it would work a treat considering almost everything in the digital world seems to be made of light.abortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion

Prankster Bit, yeah you're talking about nVidia's Digital Vibrance feature. It's a way of more accurately representing the colors on-screen.

That's the extent of what nVidia offers, though.

Greetings, SithLordAJ and welcome to TRON-Sector!

I'm with redrain85 on this one - I thought they did an excellent job with the style and look of the game. They came pretty close to the look of the film, although I didn't care for the shiny look of the skins.

I'm surprised you prefer that effect over the actual look of the game, but I hope you're able to recreate it somehow if it makes the game more entertaining for you.

We recently bought a new computer, and added an ATI Radeon X1300 videocard. The first game I installed was of course, Tron 2.0, and it looked beatuiful! Now I hear there's a shader effect that can emulate the old movie?

If anyone else has this card, can you please tell me how to activate this feature?abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

It all looks so easy on the other side of the screen!

They were called SmartShader effects. They used to be selectable under the 3D tab in the Catalyst Control Center. But after doing a bit of research, I've discovered ATI decided to remove them from recent versions of their drivers. (They were kinda pointless, anyway.)

You'd have to return to older ATI drivers to get them back. I don't know exactly when ATI removed them, but it was a ways back . . . seems about a year ago.

Oh, I see. I don't want to degrade the performance of this card, so no SmartShader for me.

I can understand them taking it out of the drivers options- it wasn't an extremely useful feature, though for some specific games, it really really works. for example, there was a mode that made colored pixels into green letters/numbers. It would be difficult to play, but would make Enter the Matrix crazy.
As for the 'stylized black & white' mode that I prefered for Tron 2.0, well, let me explain a bit.
the cutscenes that show the 'real world'- everything was black and white (except for the eyes for whatever reason. you'd see green eyes in the midst of all greys). I didn't really care for that, and can see that most games would probably not see any benifit from this mode. However, the Tron world seemed to be painted. Like picture an old black and white film that gets colorized. the color doesn't quite match up with the lines. the shading is a little strange. Well, thats how the game looks with that effect.
When I first played Tron, I had thrown on that effect, not realizing what it would do. So when I played the game, I thought the designers had done all of it on purpose. It's one of those unique little touches that makes a game edge over the notch to classic.
I can't believe that someone hasn't written some program that adds those kind of effects to it. Like you could maybe play call of duty in a mode that makes it look like an old black and white film, complete with film scratches. Maybe play max payne with some sort of drug affect on. Obviously, not every game needs an effect, but it'd be fun to mess with just about any game.

Ok, so I believe Catalyst drivers 3.8-4.2 definately have the shader effects.
but other news is that I think I got the code for the shader effect that I like so much:

shader colorBias =
"!!ARBfp1.0

PARAM grayScale = {0.30, 0.59, 0.11, 0.0};
# For the best effect play with the color biasValue on a per game basis.
# A general rule is the more bright colors a game has the higher you want this value.
PARAM biasValue = {0.20, 0.20, 0.20, 0.0};

TEMP colorPixel;
TEMP grayPixel;
TEMP tempPixel;
OUTPUT oColor = result.color;

TEX colorPixel, fragment.texcoord[0], texture[0], 2D;
DP3 grayPixel, colorPixel, grayScale;
SUB tempPixel, grayPixel, colorPixel;
ABS tempPixel, tempPixel;
SUB tempPixel, tempPixel, biasValue;
CMP oColor, tempPixel, grayPixel, colorPixel;
END";

texture[0].source = backbuffer;
apply colorBias;

Now, does anyone know how I can apply this code? I have absolutely no experience with shaders. I also got code for another kind of stylize in case this isn't it.

Sorry I can't be of any help in this thread... but it'd be cool to see a screenshot from an ATI Radeon 9600 pro doing this shader effect to Tron 2.0. Can anyone post a screenshot?

I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^
