I did a walkthrough for the first 12 levels, and I explained a strategy for using the optimizers to the best effect. At least, it was my personal take on what was the best upgrade strategy for those levels. I picked which subroutines to upgrade using Optimizers, pretty carefully.

Yes, I wondered about this too at first. I discovered that it does, indeed, apply even when you upgrade a primitive with a subroutine. In other words, it's in effect at all times and increases your damage further.

Is it worth it to get armor subroutines to Gold status? I'd imagine that you'd stay alive longer with good armor equipped, unless the ICP's discs cut through much like yours does?

I only upgraded the armor by downloading from bins. In fact, I finished the game without using armor at all. And I felt the COW upgrade opportunities were definitely too precious to waste on the armor.
