Martin does it again. Here is his latest project.
http://www.wwwmwww.com/Martin/backlight.zip
In his email to me today here is what he had to say:
as always, you are free to share this if you think it might be interesting for others as well
However, this programm is really only a test suit for (admittedly low quality) automatic backlight composition (the mouse controls the red/green brightness as you guessed). Backlight is actually calculated independently with 2 different overlays - which should come close to what was originally done on the TRON film cels. The mask has to be perfect, though
The cool thing about the programm is that you can provide your own images one for the background, the other one as mask for backlight composition (both in tga-format, both must have the exact same pixel resolution) - if you want to play around that is |
Here is an example screen shot I just made:
I don't have too much time to play around with this at the moment but I wanted to share and PLEASE if any of you want to play please share your efforts here and I'm sure Martin would welcome any and all feedback.
Enjoy,
Carl

First question for Martin...
What is the difference between the downscale4 file and the downscale 8 file? As far as I can tell both do the same thing?

Hey cool!
TRON fans are always on the lookout for useful tools to help TRONify their creative world.
I don't have the time to play with this right now, but downloaded it.
The effect is cool but seems pretty basic right now. It sounds like Martin is working on something bigger and this is a test for that project. I'd really like to see how far he takes it.
Keep us posted, Carl. Perhaps invite Martin to join us here sometime if he's in to TRON. This is the place for TRON fans.

downscale4 and downscale8 do the same, but the for the sake of speed the backlight "mask" is scaled down by either factor 4 or 8. When rendering bigger images there should be a huge speed difference.

I am already in ... but on a nonregular basis. The effect is basic indeed - what I am really after is a realtime TRON raytracer that is capable of reproducing the very TRON look (with the help of carl's povray models)...
