I have lived with an old PII 233mhz PC for over 5 years now. One that I built myself, so it actually runs okay for being ancient. However, my ultimate goal has been to have a system that can play Tron 2.0 without problems. Since I can never seem to have the money to buy all the parts I need and would really rather have a warranty on parts anyway, I've decided to go with a Dell. (I can get a discount through my workplace if I buy a Dell anyway, so...) I was wondering wether or not Tron 2.0 will be compatible with what they are offering.
What they have to offer is basically Windows Media Center. I can't pick XP Pro, even though I'd like to. Plus, I have three video cards to choose from. They are:
256Meg nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache
256Meg ATI Radeon X1300 Pro
256Meg nVidia Geforce 7900 GS
Will any of those run the game and if so, which will run it best? The system includes a gig of RAM, 250gig hard drive, and a 2.8ghz dual core Pentium Processor among other things. I've heard all sorts of things like Radeon is best or nVidia is best and that the game itself has lots of bugs and problems. I just want to play it for myself. If I can do that with this system, then that's good enough for me.

So long as it has the T&L feature built into the video card itself it should be fine. I know my Geoforce FX5200 has it built in and it is running fine on a PIII 500 with 384 megs of ram onboard. I know its a slow machine compare to my PIII 1 gigger dells over here. But its fine for what I do with them. I believe Tron 2.0 uses the T&L feature in these for texture and lighting effects for the game.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Based on performance reviews, I rank your card choices thusly:
First choice: 7900 GS
Second choice: X1300 Pro
Third choice: 7300 LE
They will all do a fine job running TRON 2.0, so if that's all you want to play then go with the cheapest card. However, if you want to play anything more recent like Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Prey, or F.E.A.R. then go with the 7900 GS if you can, or the X1300 if that's more in your price range.
Note: If you play Aliens Versus Predator then you should know that Nvidia drivers haven't been able to run AVP for over a year now (they dropped support for whatever esoteric rendering mode that apparently only AVP uses), while from what I understand the ATI drivers still run AVP without a hitch.
The rest of your specs sound good; however I would recommend that you upgrade to two GB of RAM and if you can get an X-Fi soundcard then do it.
Extra RAM will give your PC more breathing room for running Windows + games/other apps. One GB is kind of the minimum for running the various flavors of XP smoothly, and doesn't take into account the hit your performance will take from running resource-intensive apps - like games - on top of Windows XP.
An X-Fi soundcard simply outclasses all motherboard audio solutions and is really worth the money. Being that it's an APU (audio processing unit), the X-Fi chip is very powerful. Off-loading the burden of audio processing from the CPU to an APU is, as Martha would say, a good thing.
TRON 2.0 supports EAX Advanced HD 3.0. You can enable EAX in TRON 2.0 only if you have a Creative soundcard that supports at least EAX 3.0, and X-Fi cards support hardware acceleration for all EAX versions up to 5.0, which is the latest version.
Believe me when I say that the sound in TRON 2.0 with EAX enabled is awesome. There's just no comparison with non-EAX sound.

Well, it took them a while to finally get my PC shipped, but now I have it! I installed and played Tron 2.0 last night and it plays perfectly. Thanks for the help!
What is this I hear about a patch from the company? What does it do and is it needed for every system? Because mine seems to be working okay for the time being. Even with all of the graphics options kicked up to high. ^_^ "The dark can embrace the light, but never eclipse it." |

The patch isn't essential for Single Player, but it does fix a few small bugs. If you're only interested in playing Single Player at the moment, then you probably won't want to install it yet. If you do, it will make your saved games useless and you'll have to start over.
The patch IS essential for Multiplayer, however.
Whenever you decide you want to install it, it's available right here from Tron-Sector.

Congratulations on getting a new PC!
Now spill! What did you end up getting, hardware-wise?

Thanks for the info. So the multiplayer mode is non-functional without the patch? I guess I'll forego that for now then. Since I'm already a little ways into the game. Don't want to have to start over.
As for my specs, I got:
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4Ghz
1Gig DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHZ-2X512MB
250Gig HD SATA II, 7200 RPM
256MB NVIDA 7900 GS
Sound Blaster Audigy MB Audio
Windows XP Media Center
I guess those are the basic specs. I could have gone with more, but I didn't want to keep adding more and more money per month. "The dark can embrace the light, but never eclipse it." |
