So I popped the DVD of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in tonight and I was, for the first time believe it or not, caught by the similarity between its ending and Tron’s.
V’Ger’s area and the MCP’s are pretty similar. Both incline and then decline into a recessed area. Both are surrounded by a mesa, of sorts. In ST:TMP V’Ger’s area has lightning strikes, that give it ambiance. In Tron, the MCP’s mesa has beams of energy that flit through the cracks.
The interior of V’Ger’s and the MCP’s areas are somewhat similar with beams of energy going from the outer structure to the inner part.
Both movies end with the central part coming to a critical mass, and those inside having to flee.
Do you think the design of the MCP’s final area was based at all, or influenced by V’Ger’s area in ST:TMP? I have no problems with this at all. ST: TMP was an awesome film and if the designers of Tron thought it was cool and borrowed from it, that’s perfectly fine.
Dave, you may have some insider information on this.. Do you know if Lisberger was influenced at all by ST: TMP?

this seems likely to me. I'm sure Lisburger has mentioned it somewhere.

I thought ST:TMP was a great film, even in its original incarnation. I actually kind of miss some of the stuff that was cut out of the Director's Edition. But the new effects in it were tastefully done, definitely a great example of how to update something using new CGI effects.
I never really thought of the film as having any kind of connection or inspiration to Tron, but now that you mention it I can see some similarities that I didn't before. Interesting.
When I met up with Dave last week, he told me that someone who worked on Star Trek also worked on Tron, doing pre-production work. So it's possible there was some influence.

Richard Taylor worked on Star Trek TMP, so obviously his influence is felt there.
Andy Probert did some initial design work for TRON but his art was not used in the final film, although if you look through it, you can see that it did influence a direction towards what Syd and Moebius ultimately pulled off.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pillabortion pills online http://www.kvicksundscupen.se/template/default.aspx?abortion-questions cytotec abortion
