About video taping from a camra of a TV set... There are ways to do it by syncing the refresh rates together but the deivces you could use are expensive..... or the one my brother and I use are expensive.... but doesn't seem to work all the time.. lol...
I'm looking forward in seeing this new installment. Keep us posted.. |

Maybe trying a different background would do the trick? |
Well, I've considered replacing the ASCII text background with a kind of circuitry board background for the green monochrome image-type look. I've also considered doing a basic grid for the 3D background. Both have TRON elements to them (which I really like) and neither should look like anything from The Matrix.
MutoidMan Wrote:I like the color image, also; but to me it has more of an Andy Warhol pop art look than a limited-palette computer graphics one. |
Ahhhh! Nooo!
I don't want people thinking about Andy Warhol paintings when they see "Weed Killer". Crap! I'm guessing it is the dark blue contrast that causes that look to pop in to your mind, and not just the face colors. I chose the dark blue for the darkest color because it seemed to have that slightly-off look to it, as many color graphics in the early 80's did. Perhaps if the dark blue were changed to dark gray? This is getting tricky.

Thanks for the input, Qix77! But the problem is not with the video sync, it is with the way colors and detail get washed out when I shoot a TV set. It's a little better shooting a computer monitor because the colors display better, but even they get washed out some. On a TV though, the colors end up looking not so good and the image looks more like a bright glowing blobish image more than a TV image. The scan lines of the TV do not come through so well, just the light portions kind of blend together, if that makes any sense.
Ok, as a refresher as to what early 80's 8-bit color graphics look like, I did some searching and tried to focus on human color tones. These images are all from the C64, one of the better color rendering computers of the early 80's. There is a lot of dithering going on in many of these images. I don't care to simulate dithering because as my video image goes through video compression and resizing, the dithering will look more like compression artifacts than dithering. I was really going for the area-fill-in look, for those of you who remember when many draw-in graphics images would outline an area and fill it in. I figured that look would alter my face enough to not just look like a digitized video image (although it still does to some extent) and still have a somewhat old-school computer look. Notice I even found a C64 image of Max Headroom himself! I can't do lines (as in the outlines of characteristic) in my pseudo-simulated imagery though - that would require rotoscoping and take an insane amount of time for a 1-man crew (me) to complete. I included my Weed Killer image on the right for comparison.

Sketch did 6 really cool conceptual images yesterday. He experimented with several techniques, and some of them incorporated pixelation simulation. Originally, I thought that wouldn't work because of image resizing, but the way he did it worked pretty well, I thought.
I'll wait for Sketch to chime in before I go posting anything, but I'd like to share what he came up with.
The 6th image was more of a gag image (he was definitely having some fun with it) that he titled "wtf". The look of the image is not very feasible to use because it would require manual zoning of areas on each frame, not to mention a lot of old video game animation footage, but I thought it looked cool and it put some really neat ideas in to my head... well, they were cool until the reality of "I can't pull that kind of thing off" set in.
Very cool work, Sketch! I still can't believe how quickly you just pump out things like that.
Well, I'm completely uncertain as to which direction to take the look of the Weed Killer character. If I could, I would simulate the actual Max Headroom look as closely as possible. But I can't. So I'm working with ideas of old-school 8-bit computing... and not sure what look to use. I may stick with green monochrome and a different background. I may try some of the idea elements Sketch was so gracious to offer. Or I may try something completely new.
For now, I'm going to work on getting it edited. Believe it or not, just editing the footage together with all the quirks and stutters takes some time. Then prepping the frames for getting their graphic look takes more time. Then there's additional audio tweaking.
I made the 1st video in 9 days and was only partially happy with the outcome. I may spend a little more time on this, though it will be as short as the first.
Sorry for the looooooooooong posts. For anyone still reading, I really appreciate your input on this.

Thanks Todd.
Having fun tinkering with the images and actually using some random photos I've taken, which have inluenced me in what directions to try out with the images of a recent photo hobby.
Go right ahead and post the images I made if you want. I don't mind the others seeing them one bit.
I still like Effect 5 the best. It has that plastic look and with the angled nature of the skin tones form is abstract in such a way that it LOOKS like a digital character, unlike first round of images. Throw in a hint pixels and scanlines to really sell the monitor enviroment. Even though the eyes and mouth features are rather muted, I wouldn't worry much about that cause with how animated your personality is Todd in the videos that wouldn't be lost at all, in fact it would really bring a strong lifeforce to the character. That's one key element, is as a stillframe the personality or figure doesn't look real, yet once in motion it becomes real due to the liveaction nautre of it. https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue_bezel/ |

I originally released a short, unfinished version (on YouTube only). That is probably what you are remembering. I wasn't sure if I was going to finish the project as it was proving to take longer than I expected and I wasn't sure the effort was worth the outcome. Of course, I did finish it and posted about it again when complete.

Sketch - as always, your work is awesome!
Thank you so much for spending your time on this!
I'm sure you've read through the THREE page e-mail I sent you by now.
Short on time - must log off for the night now.
For those who wanted to see Sketch's concept imagery, I'll be adding a Weed Killer concept page to my website sometime in the near future, I hope. Don't have the time to host and post anything here right now.
Thanks everyone for your kind words about the character and insightful remarks about the design and look of him.
More to come soon.
