Yes, you do need the v1.042c patch to play online. The patch does install a few new maps, adds the Derez (Deathmatch) mode, and fixes bugs. 
If you can't connect to servers when you click "Join" then maybe it's because you do not have the right custom maps, or maybe you have too many maps.
The game has a problem with too many maps. I created a program called REZ Handler to deal with this:
