Lightcycles Toys Question +

on Thursday, July, 13, 2006 12:41 AM
Greetings, Programs!

1) I have a question regarding the lightcycles toys. Does anyone know which colors were available for the original 80s releases? As you might guess, I'm speaking of the ones put out by Tomy for the 4"-scale figures.

I remember having an orange one. [In fact, I think I still have it tucked away in storage somewhere...] My younger brother got an orange one as well. I just don't recall exactly which other colors were available back then.

2) Also, for the release of the toys in more recent years (from NECA?), I think there were blue, red, orange AND yellow lightcycles available. Is this correct? Anyone know if any other colors were available from mass (non-custom) production?

3) Can anyone tell me if other 4"-scale figures or toys were planned (either in the 80s or more recently) for release? Interested in unproduced / unreleased toy trivia.

4) Did the Tron 2.0 toy line do well?

Any helpful information would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx in advance.

Best wishes,
Jayce

End of Line.

This subject comes up from time to time. There are two colors, Red and Yellow, from the TOMY line. Many of the red cycles appear more of an orange, but there are only two official colors, and the orangish bikes are oficially considered red.

I wonder if the orange bike you recall was one of the smaller knockoff Laser Cycles? They came in Blue, Silver and Yellow I think. Perhaps an orange one of those existed?

The NECA line had three colors, Red, Yellow and Blue. No orange. There is an orange bike in the RAH 100 line from Japan and the Kubrick toys. The best bike is the black one with green grid lines from Kubrick.

I m not aware of unproduced toys from the TOMY line, but I was told that a prototype of a lightcycle for the TRON 2.0 line was created, but I never saw any proof of it.

DaveTRON,

Greetings, Program!

Thanks for the data share.

I think you are correct in thinking my childhood lightcycles were the "red" ones that looked orange. Again, between my brother & I, we owned 2. They were the official release versions. I seem to recall which local store we bought them from. Sadly, the store no longer exists. I think the space has been filled by a car dealership, no less. [My] memory is still intact. Ha, ha.

I didn't even know bootleg lightcycles existed until I saw TimothyC's posted pic. [Saw that AFTER I started this post string. My bad.]
I must admit that there is an appeal to getting a green lightcycle & a silver (gray) one as well. [Don't get me wrong. I don't like to encourage bootlegging but, as fellow Tron fans, I'm guessing people know what I mean.]
I saw pics of the wire frame (black with green lines?) motorcycle on ebay. Medicom is one cool company. I bought TONS of toys from them when I lived in Japan (1997 - 2000). Too bad their Tron toys aren't of the 4" figure size. I'm more of a fan of that scale.

Still, with such a shortage of Tron-related merchandise out there, I may just go ahead & start collecting some of Medicom's Kubrick stuff. Heck, they even have a recognizer! Tiny but still cool.

Anyone know if any other cool Tron toys are coming down the pipe from any company/companies?

Best wishes,
Jayce

P.S. DaveTron, I recently bought one blue lightcycle & one yellow one (the toys released in recent years). I'm still hoping to purchase a red one. I may get 2 more blue lightcycles (a strain on the wallet, yes, I know...ouch) since I figure it would be cool to "re-enact" the 6-cycle scene from the film.

It's truly a shame that a Ram figure was never officially produced. Or the "enemy" bikers. I always stuck Sark or the warrior figure in my old bike when I needed a bad guy.

They should make a Dumont figure, too. Out of respect and affection.

You should like the RAH 100 figures then. They are on scale with the classic TOMY and NECA redos. Even have removable costume pieces.

there are four bikes in the series and each comes with a character.

I agree that there should be a Dumont toy, as well as RAM, Clu, Yori (Although she made it into the Medicom Kubrick line), and even the real world folks too. I'd love to see more toys in the line, but alas, I doubt we will.

Jayce,

Check out this picture and you'll see all five colors, that I know of anyway, that the bootleg cycles came in. Regarding the orange cycle, I've had that debate with a few people over the years. Honestly I think they were all a similar shade of red back in '82, but plastic breaks down with time and different batches have broken down at different rates. To answer your question specifically though I would say that there were only two different lightcycles available to 99.7% of us.

Although I've never seen any unproduced Tomy toys, I know that a complete set of hardcopies was found almost two years ago. The original light cycle models also turned up but the designer was wanting an *insane* amount of cash. The dealer that sold the hardcopy set sold them to a private individual and no one seems to know who this person is. Personally I'd pay $3000 for the set of four, but there are probably others willing to pay more . Out of curiosity, has anyone seen proof cards (prototype packaging) for the Tomy figures?

I couldn't agree more! At some point in the next year or so I'm going to commision a toy sculptor that I know to make a custom Dumont for me. Yori is another must, but we'll see how nice Dumont turns out before I pay for others as well .

Anyone know if any other cool Tron toys are coming down the pipe from any company/companies?

Sadly, I don't know of anything new. The resurgence of Tron toys in the last few years has been fantastic but I have a sinking feeling it's coming to an end.

Tim,

You own all five Lazer Cycles in boxes? How did you pull that off? I've never seen one on Ebay, let alone all five.

In a word, luck! I've bugged quite a few toy dealers over the years and have posted multiple wanted listings for them on a some toy forums that I belong to. I wound up buying one from an overseas seller that I had just bought some bootlegg Simpsons figures from (I had asked him about Tron stuff and he responded with a pic!). It wasn't very cheap although I would have paid multiples more if that's what it would have taken.

Long story short I pressured the seller for more info as he was a little weird about the deal and come to find out he had the others. It would have been awesome to have found them at a local toy show or something like that but I'm not complaining. They've been a holy grail of mine for years so I'm thrilled to have them. I'm guessing it's going to take me a solid 10 years to track down all of them MOC. After that the hunt will be on for a boxed moto-lazer (the Argentine bootleg) example .

Greetings, Programs.

TimothyC, are those lightcycles the same size/scale as the ones from TOMY & NECA?

It's very cool that your collection includes the green & gray ("silver") cycles.

I am really sad that Disney hasn't gone all-out with Tron merchandising (either in the 80s *or* in recent years). I went through a local Disney store yesterday and they didn't have ANY Tron merchandise. Not even the DVDs or soundtracks. It's disappointing.

Not to bum my fellow TRON fans out but, at my workplace, I had my blue & yello NECA lightcycles on my desk. Apparently, the boss went around the building putting circular red stickers on everything that he wanted off the floor ["stash it (out of site) or trash it" his e-mail says]. I'd like to put a red sticker on him. [My desk at work is one of the cleanest & most un-cluttered desks so I KNOW the light cycles aren't getting in his way.]

It's becoming like Natzi Germany around here (my office). I think I'll be quitting next year.

Whoa, sorry to hear about your work situation Jayce. I can't fathom the thought of loose light cycles being an issue on a work desk/cube. Sounds like the boss has gone on some mad pointless power trip.

TimothyC, are those lightcycles the same size/scale as the ones from TOMY & NECA?

They are a good bit smaller. I would say they're probably about two-thirds the size of the TOMY/Neca cycles. In a way their size makes them neat, but at the same time they would be much cooler if you could actaully put TOMY figures inside them (and not that Gobot bootleg).

TimothyC,

Greetings, Program!

Thanx for the reply. Yeah. Our new boss. He's like the MCP around here. Oh, my lightcycles? They are still in the box! [NECA ones.] Oh, well. I guess I can still display them at home.

Have you seen those Medicom Toy versions of the TOMY/NECA toys? The 4 different lightcycles, each one with a different figure? I'm pondering getting those myself.

I'm wondering if their versions allow for the cycle riders to sit head forward like in the movies. I'm doubting not, though.

Regardless, their Tron toys are pretty cool!

Best wishes,
Jayce

Those are the Medicom RAH 100 figures mentioned above.

I believe it does. I'll have to go look again, but I think the reason for the design of the figures, like old MIcronauts toys, was to allow them to hug the bike like the actors in the film.order abortion pill http://unclejohnsprojects.com/template/default.aspx?morning-after-pill-price where to buy abortion pill

DaveTron,

Greetings, Program!

Thanx for the response. If you can check on the Medicom toys to see if they sit head-forward, I'd be much obliged. I'm considering getting those &, if they DO ride like they do in the movie, it would be that much more of a motivation.

Japan toys can be expensive, though. When I lived there, it wasn't too bad. However, when you are in the U.S. (or elsewhere outside Japan), you gotta tack on the shipping expense and, boy, that gets up there.

Ah, well. Those toys are worth the quality, though.

Best wishes,
Jayce

Hi Jayce
Check out this link. Shows the figures leaning forward inside the cycles.

I've just been very lucky and got hold of the complete set. Really looking forward to receiving them and seeing what they're like

Greetings, Programs.

Thanx to morganswift & DaveTRON (and ebay) for bringing the RAH (Real Action Heroes) 100 Tron series to my attention. I was kinda teetering on whether or not I wanted to get them or not.

However, after seeing the page that morganswift shared the link to, I think I'm convinced. Even though the Japanese Tron figures look "skinnier" than the original TOMY (& NECA remake) ones, the fact that they sit head-forward in the lightcycles is a great improvement. [Too bad they don't sit "comfortably" in the cycles.]

I was looking at the page & realized, the color of the "handle" bar isn't necessarily the same as the color of the cooresponding cycle now is it? Of course, this is just minor nitpicking. Heck, I should just be thankful. Cool Tron toys!

Now if they could only make Dumont, Ram and, like I think DaveTRON said, the human/user characters as well.

Best wishes,
Jayce

End of line.
